题目内容

【题目】 An obvious reason for learning a new language is to be able to communicate with the people who speak it.1 People in every country prefer it when tourists make an effort to speak the local language, even if all you can say in it is “hello” and “please”.

Cultural understanding

Speaking a new language helps you to get to know another people and culture, as language and culture go hand in hand.2 It shows new ways of looking at the world. In addition, when you speak another language, you can enjoy literature, film, and music in the original language. It is extremely difficult for a translation to be a perfect replica (复制品) of the original. 3.

Business and careers

4 Schools and employers tend to prefer candidates who speak one or more foreign languages. Even though English is widely spoken in much of the world, the fact is that the global economy depends on communication. When dealing with France, for example, someone who speaks French will have an obvious advantage over someone who doesn’t.

Language improvement

Learning another language can help you to understand your own. Many languages have contributed to the development of English.5 Also, in learning how another language differs from your own, you will increase your understanding of your own language. For many people, language is innate (与生俱来的) — we know how to say something, but we don’t necessarily know why we say it that way. Learning another language can change that.

A.Language is helpful in making foreign friends.

B.The best way is to read what the author actually wrote.

C.Learning another language opens one’s mind to new ideas.

D.Your trip will be comfortable if you speak the local language.

E.Speaking more than one language will increase your market ability.

F.It is true that mastering another foreign language is very beneficial.

G.Learning those will teach you where words and even grammatical structures are from.

【解析】

本文是一篇说明文。语言学习的明显目的是为了交流,但对我们了解异域文化、职业发展和语言提高也有很好的帮助作用。

1根据下文中的People in every country prefer it when tourists make an effort to speak the local language, even if all you can say in it is “hello” and “please”.(每个国家的人都喜欢游客努力说当地语言,即使你只能说“你好”和“请”)可知,D项中的Your triptourists相呼应,且语义(如果你能说当地的语言,你的旅行会很舒服)承接上文。故选D

2根据段落开头Speaking a new language helps you to get to know another people and culture, as language and culture go hand in hand.(说一门新的语言可以帮助你了解另一个民族和文化,因为语言和文化是相辅相成的)可知,C选项(学习另一种语言能够开阔眼界)能承接上文内容。故选C

3根据上文中的It is extremely difficult for a translation to be a perfect replica (复制品) of the original.(译文要完全复制原文是极其困难的)可知,B选项(最好的方法是阅读作者的原著)能够承接上文。且选项中the author和上文the original相呼应。故选B

4根据下文中的Schools and employers tend to prefer candidates who speak one or more foreign languages.(学校和雇主倾向于选择会说一种或多种外语的候选人)可知,E选项(讲多种语言能够增加市场机会)能承接上文,且选项中more than one language和前文的One or more foreign languages相呼应。故选E

5根据上文的Learning another language can help you to understand your own. Many languages have contributed to the development of English.(学习另一种语言可以帮助你理解自己的语言。

Speaking more than one language will increase your market ability.(讲多种语言能够增加市场机会)中的more than one language和前文的One or more foreign languages相呼应,又因语义承接上文,即可推断出E项正确。

The University of Cambridge confirmed on Monday that it had been using scores from China's national college entrance examination, or gaokao, as part of its admission criteria for Chinese students for several years.

It says in Weibo post, however, that it does not admit students only based on their test scores.

The University statement came after some Chinese media reported over the weekend that the university would start to admit Chinese students that ranked in the top 0.1 percent in the gaokao in their province, indicating that it would try to compete for talent with top universities in China.

The news immediately became one of the most viewed topics on social media, being read by 280 million users on Sina Weibo.

The gaokao is increasingly accepted by universities in Australia, the United States, Canada and Europe. The University of New Hampshire became the first US state university to accept the gaokao in its entrance criteria last year. The test is also recognized by 30 universities in Australia and 30 in Canada, as well as colleges in Italy, France and Spain.

【题目】 There is an English saying, '1' Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. 2

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise.3 If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. 4

5They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.

A.Laughter can surely last one's life.

B.As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh.

C.The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain.

【题目】 Porridge doesn't have a very tasty name, does it? It doesn't have a very tasty reputation, either. I'm here to try and convince you that porridge isn’t boring and tasteless, that it can be a delicious, convenient and very healthy way to start the day.

If you’ve never eaten it (although you probably have), porridge is a type of food served for breakfast. It is usually a type of grain, like rice or oat (燕麦), mixed with either milk or water, and often heated up. It is often thicker than liquid, but not solid and is very easy to digest, so it's a better option for people who are ill, and it provides long-lasting energy for the day.

Porridge preparation--the amount of ingredients (配料) and cooking time—depends on what you choose to use as your porridge base. If I'm cooking for myself, I put a very big handful of ‘rolled’ oats in a saucepan, add a little bit of water and about 200ml of milk, and let the mixture boil. I stir the porridge constantly, and it takes about five to ten minutes to cook.

Once it's cooked, the fun part is adding the flavors. Porridge alone doesn't have a very strong flavour. Although some people think this makes porridge boring, I think this is what makes porridge exciting! It is like a blank piece of paper—you can add almost anything you want to the porridge base. Greens, nuts and dried fruits are very healthy options to add and can give you energy for the day. But if you don't like these, or you're allergic, then honey and chocolate are also very tasty options. (Just don’t add to much!)

One of the best things about porridge? You can make it almost anywhere in the world. Either oats or rice or both are “staple foods (主食)” for many people across the world. You can usually buy big bags of either, then add local ingredients to make your porridge interesting—whatever is cheap and convenient to find, wherever you are. I am currently in Mexico, and I love to heat my oats up with milk, then mix in peanuts and pumpkin seeds and cacao nibs, and I put a layer of sugar over the top to make my porridge sweeter.

Porridge? Hopefully it sounds a lot tastier now!

【题目】 An increasing part of the world is becoming artificially lit. Artificial light is often seen as a sign of progress: the march of civilization shines a light in the dark; it takes back the night. But some scientists argue that unnaturally bright nights are bad not just for astronomers but also for nocturnal (夜间的) animals and even for human health.

Now research shows the night is getting even brighter. From 2012 to 2016 the earth’s artificially lit area expanded by about 2.2 percent a year, according to a study published last November in Science Advances. However, the measurement does not include light from most of the energy–efficient LED lamps that have been replacing sodium-vapor (钠气灯) technology in cities all over the world ,says Christopher Kyba, a postdoctoral researcher at the German Research Center for Geosciences in Potsdam.

The new data came from a NASA satellite instrument called the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIRS). It can measure long wavelengths of light, such as those produced by traditional yellow-and-orange sodium-vapor street lamps. But VIIRS cannot see the short-wavelength blue light produced by white LEDs. This light has been shown to disturb human sleep cycles and nocturnal animals’ behavior.

The team believes the ongoing switch to LEDs caused already bright countries such as Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the U.S. to register as having stable levels of lighting in the VIIRS data. In contrast, most nations in South America, Africa and Asia brightened, suggesting increases in the use of traditional lighting.

In 2016, a study showed that one third of the world’s population currently lives under skies too bright to see the Milky Way at night. Between 2012 and 2016 the median nation pumped out 15 percent more long-wavelength light as its GDP increased by 13 percent. Overall, counties' total light production correlated with their GDP.

1Which of the following can best describe artificial light?

A.Convenient but unnatural.B.Useful but energy-consuming.

C.Progressive but uncomfortable.D.Civilized but harmful.

2What can we know about the already bright countries?

A.Traditional lighting is not used in those countries.

B.LED lights are increasingly used in those countries.

C.Efforts to reduce harmful light work in those countries.

D.People do enjoy stable lighting in those countries.

3Why does the author mention “the median nation” in the last paragraph?

A.To show artificial light has an association with GDP.

B.To demonstrate GDP plays an important part in the median nation.

C.To stress the median nation was to blame for the light problem.

D.To suggest artificial light should be banned in the future.

4Where is the passage most probably taken from?

A.A biology textbook.B.A book review.

C.A science magazine.D.A science fiction.
