5.When I came to Cincinnati as an au pair (家庭打工留学生),a lot of things there were different from what I knew.My host family lived in a huge house I could only describe as a"castle".In Germany I had lived in a small apartment together with my mom.Soon I found out that the"castle"was actually rather small in our neighborhood.
Everybody there was very friendly and polite.They greeted you when they were walking by at least 3feet away from you.They must not have seen a German au pair before,for most people I met asked me all kinds of questions about Germany.I enjoyed answering their various strange questions.I made a lot of friends and I started to hang out with them.
Of course,there were a number of new things,and it took me the whole year to find them all out.I never got homesick.Perhaps it was because I did not have too many negative experiences and felt loved and welcomed there.
However,I had undergone some painful experience back in Germany.I was frustrated by the way people would run me over and not even say"Sorry".Taking up my studies at the TU-Dresden,I felt lonely.Everybody here seemed to be withdrawn(离群的) and I missed everything I had in Cincinnati.Germany was so"cold".I found it so much harder to make new friends.I also flew back to Cincinnati several times for long periods.I felt that without those visits I was not able to make it.
Now I am over this German culture shock.It almost took me an entire year.I am still going back and forward between Dresden and Cincinnati four times a year.

分析 本文主要讲述了一个德国女孩在美国辛辛那提市做家庭打工留学生的经历以及这种经历对她以后的生活产生的影响.

解答 24.B 细节理解题.根据句子They must not have seen a German au pair before,for most people I met asked me all kinds of questions about Germany.
Everybody here seemed to be withdrawn and I missed everything I had in Cincinnati可知,作者此时十分想念在辛辛那提的朋友.

15.That children are the hoped of our tomorrow is a statement that is repeated time and again.And it is an axiom(格言); they are our pillars of the coming time.But then do we train them into becoming healthy human beings?
Healthy human beings here are not meant the physical well being, but the good human being, that is,one with virtues and values keeps them in the state of working towards the benefit of humanity.
How can children absorb within themselves the virtues and values?Well,this is the primary responsibility of parents and other immediate family member,followed by school authorities.The values and virtues of an individual is sown in their childhood and nurtured as they grow up.

Your child is liked a plant.You sow the seeds and also reap the benefits of its growth and development.First and foremost you as a parent have to realize your responsibility in nurturing a child to grow into a good human being.And it is just not up to anyone of the parents,but both together to inculcate(谆谆教诲)the values and virtues into your child.

13.Spring soccer season is under way,and many youth leagues are playing under new safety rules. In November, the US Soccer Federation said that players on its teams who are 10 or younger are no longer allowed to head the ball Players ages 11 to 13 have limits on how often they can practice heading. The new rules are made to prevent kids from getting concussions (脑震荡)-injuries caused by a blow to the head that shakes the brain.Common problems include headaches and dizziness.Severe concussions can lead to long brain damage.
Heading the ball can be one of the riskiest parts of soccer.Sometimes the force of hitting the ball with their heads gives players concussions. But more often, players receive concussions when they accidentally knock heads with other players and hit their heads on the grass."More concussions happen during the act of heading than any other action in soccer,"explains Dr.Robert Cantu,an expert on brain injuries.
So far,the new rules are made only to teams that are part of the US Soccer Federation. But the group says it hopes other leagues will soon follow its example.
Former US soccer star Brandi Chastain is one of the leaders of the activity to ban heading in youth soccer. She applauds the rule change.Last month,Chastain showed her determination of learning more about the effects of heading when she promised to donate her brain to science after she dies.
"If there's any information to be gathered on the study of someone like me,who has played soccer for 40 years,it feels like my responsibility,"Chastain told The New York Times.

10.From old times,crows(乌鸦)have been famous for their cleverness.They use tools,work out problems,and even enjoy playing.Scientists have studied carefully how crows go about these activities.
To make tools,crows cut off leaves with their"mouths",shape them,and use them to look for bugs(虫子)in wood or plants.Just as a carpenter carries his tools with him,a crow will carry its tool around.When the leaf isn't needed for the moment,the bird stores the tool at its feet or somewhere else.
To test wild crows'abilities to work out problems,scientists placed food outdoors in covered bowls.They watched with interest as the birds smartly opened the bowls to get the food.Scientists also found out that crows can make use of the traffic.For example,crows would drop a nut on the road and wait for a car to run over the nut to break it.
Besides,crows seem to enjoy playing.Young crows will carry a stick or nut into the air,drop it,and fly to catch the object as it falls.
So just how smart are crows?Perhaps a crow will never do tricks as a dog will.But scientists agree that there's a lot going on in the brain of a clever crow.

17.Children of America are getting fatter every time.13% of the children at the age of 6to 11are overweight.
When we look at children's lives today in the USA,we can see the origin of the problem--sports and foods.Young children like sports but they don't have enough around the start of high school.That's especially true for girls.Meanwhile,to make matters worse,schools are becoming much more interested in sports teams.So children are not able to get enough exercise just when they need it the most.There is also the food problem.Children get most of their calories(热量) at restaurants or parties or somewhere else away from home.They often drink too many cokes.Parents have a lot of fears about telling a child he needs to lose weight--they are afraid it will push a child into an eating disorder.Some parents fear that pushing children to lose weight means their children will think they're not good enough,or not loved because of their weight.Parents need to come to terms with the fact that the family is very important to the children.The most useful program for children is called"family weight control".This is good news.Mom and Dad,even if they don't have weight problems,have to go through the same program as their children and learn how to get some exercise and how to eat healthily.

Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Li Hua,and I'm from China,I am writing to thank you forgiving me a chance to learn about deaf people.
Last month,as a representative of Chinese middle-school students,I took part in volunteer activities you organized.I lived with deaf people in the International Home for the Deaf for a week.It was the first time that I had been in such close contact with deaf people. We participated in other activities as well, such as giving speeches to tell people to care for deaf people.
Though it was a short time,I learned a lot.I learned about how they live and what they do in their spare time,as well as how they communicate and express themselves.I myself can now use some simple sign language, and I've realized that I'm very lucky to be able to make their lives easier and let them know we care about them.Without you,I would not have known all about this.I promise I will do my part to continue helping them.
Your sincerely.
