Years ago I had the opportunity to meet a girl who reinforced my understanding of the power of belief. She was   36  the most powerful person I had ever met. I met Chris for the first time while taking the Dale Carnegie   37  in California.
Our class had already been going for quite some time when   38 , supported by metal crutches(拐杖),   39   herself in. Chris had cerebral palsy(大脑性麻痹). She had many   40  in communicating with others. This was not due to   41  of desire, but because most of her twenty-one years of life she had been kept in a room with no more than Elvis records and tapes to   42  her. No one had taken the time to assist her in developing the ability to   43 . It was Bonnie, her current caretaker, who   44  there was much more to Chris than anyone else gave her credit for.
When asked by the instructor what her goal   45  the twelve-week course was, Chris struggled to respond and became frustrated and   46  in the process. For most of her   47 nobody would listen to her. The only way she knew to get someone to   48  was through temper outbursts. With Bonnie as her interpreter, Chris conveyed that her   49  was to be able to stand by herself in front of forty-five people and tell us about herself.
On the twelfth week, Chris stood in front of the room and   50  with us, in her own words, what her life had been like. It was one of the most beautiful and enlightening experiences I had ever   51 . Though as a girl who had in many ways been   52 , she believed that she could __53__ more in her life and she did. And she also had the love and support of forty-five friends, who, just weeks before, had been   54  strangers.
What we all witnessed through Chris’ courage is that life is   55  moment by moment, based on our beliefs, which are relevant to both our personal and professional direction and have the power to make our wildest dreams come true.

Eleven-year-old Angela was attacked by a rare   21  affecting her nerve system. She was unable to walk and her movement was    22  in other ways as well. The doctors did not hold much    23   of her ever recovering from this illness. They    24  she'd spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair. They said that few, if any, were able to come back to    25 after suffering from this disease .The little girl was   26 . There, lying in her hospital bed, she would swear that she was   27  going to be walking again one day.
She was moved to a specialized    28 hospital in the San Francisco Bay area. All   29  that could be applied to her case were used. The doctors were moved by her undefeatable spirit. They taught her about imaging about seeing herself walking. If it would do   30 else, it would at least give her hope and something   31 to do in the long waking hours in her bed. Angela would work as hard as possible in physical treatments, and in exercise sessions. But she worked just as hard lying there faithfully doing her   32  , visualizing herself moving, moving, moving!
One day,   33 she was attempting, with all her might, to imagine her legs moving again, it seemed as though something  34  happened: the bed moved! It began to move around the room! She    35 out, "Look what I'm doing! Look! Look! I can do it”. I moved! I moved!"
Of course, at this very moment everyone else in the hospital was screaming, too, and running to a   36 place. People were screaming, equipment was  37 and glass was breaking. You see, it was the terrible San Francisco earthquake.  38 don't tell that to Angela. She    39  that she did it.
And now only a few years later, she's back in school, on her own   40  . No crutches, no wheelchair. You see, anyone who can shake the earth between San Francisco and Oakland can defeat a little disease, can't they?

There was a time when I thought my dad didn’t know a thing about being a good father. I couldn’t   36  him ever saying the words “I love you.” It seems to me his only purpose in life was to say “  37  ” to anywhere I wanted to go and anything I wanted to do, including getting a   38 . Some parents bought their kids cars when they got their driver’s licenses. Not my dad ---- he said that I’d have to get a job and buy my own.
So that is what I did. I got a job at a very nice restaurant and   39  every penny I could and   40  I had enough to buy my car, I did! The day I brought that car home, my dad was the first one I wanted to   41  to. “Look, dad, a car of my own. If you ever want a ride, I’ll only   42 you five dollars.” I offered with a smile.
“I see,” was all he said.
One day, there was something wrong with my father’s truck. So he needed a   43  to work. The sun wasn’t even up when we left the house ,   44  it was already getting warm out. It was going to be a(n)   45  day. As I dropped my dad off, I   46  him, dressed in his work clothes, getting his   47  from the truck (车尾箱) of my car. Watching his sun-weathered face, and even from a distance I could tell there were   48  lines than I ever remembered being there before. I realized how hard my dad works for the family. My father is a cement finisher(水泥修整工).
In that instant, it  49  to me that he actually got down on his hands and knees to sweat over hot concrete to make a living for his family. And he did this day in and day out,   50  hot it got. Never, not once, had I hear him   51  about it. To him we were “worth” it. And never once did he “charge” us for it.
When he closed the trunk, his tools set off to the side, he walked over to my window to   52  me five dollars. I rolled down the window and said “Good-bye, dad. Keep your five dollars. It’s my   53 . Don’t work too hard. I love you.”
His   54  met mine, then glanced away in the direction of his waiting tools, he   55  his throat and said, “Oh, and… me, too.”

Researchers are placing robotic dogs(机器狗)in the homes of lonely old people to determine whether they can improve the quality of life for humans. Alan Beck,an expert in human animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards,a professor of nursing, are leading the animal assisted study concerning the influence of robotic dogs on old people’s depression, physical activity, and life satisfaction.“No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active, challenged,or stimulated(刺激),”Edwards points out.“The problem is how we promote(使……成为现实)that, especially for those without friends or help. A robotic dog could be a solution.”
In the study, the robot, called AIBO,is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. Before placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activities before and after AIBO. Then, the researchers will review the data to determine if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner.
“I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice,”says a seventy year old lady.“When I’m watching TV,he’ll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has a mind of his own.”
The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people.Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercises and feeding concerns.
“At the beginning,it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog, because it was metal and not furry.”Beck says.“But it’s amazing how quickly we have given up that belief.”
Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become a more valuable health helper. They will record their masters’ blood pressure, oxygen levels,or heart rhythms. AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate old people’s minds.

My l4-year-old son, John, and I spotted the coat which was hanging at a secondhand clothing store in Northampton Mass. While the other coats drooped, this one looked as if it were   36  itself up. The coat had beautiful tailoring, a Fifth Avenue label and a(an)  37  price of $28, which was popular just then with   38  , but could cost several hundred dollars new. This coat was even better, bearing that   39  of classic elegance. John tried it on and the fit was perfect.
John   40  the coat to school the next day and came home wearing a big smile "Did the kids like your coat?" I asked. "They loved it," he said,   41  folding it over the back of a chair and smoothing it flat. Over the next few weeks, a   42  came over John. Agreement replaced contrariness and reasoned discussion replaced fierce   43 . He became more mannerly and   44 , eager to please. He would generously loan his younger brother his tapes and lecture him   45  his behavior.
When I mentioned this incident to his teacher and   46  what caused the changes, she said laughing. "It   47  be his coat!" Another teacher told him she was giving him a good   48  not only because he had earned   49  but because she liked his coat. At the library, we ran into a friend “Could this be John?" he asked surprisingly,   50  John's new height, assessing the cut of his coat and extending his hand, one gentleman to another.
John and I both know we should never   51  a person's clothes for the real person within them.   52  there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see and for   53  what is on the inside to what is on the outside.
For John it is a time when it is as easy to try on different approaches to   54  as it is to try on a coat. The whole world, the whole future is stretched out ahead, a vast landscape   55  all the doors are open. And he could picture himself walking through those doors wearing his wonderful, magical coat.

___37___, that afternoon, when I came home, Mom said to me___38___, “Honey, I have some___39___news that I need to tell you. This morning, while you were at school, Tippy was hit by a car and___40___. I’m so sorry.”
“No! It’s not true!” I was___41___. I couldn’t believe her. “Tippy, come here! Come on, boy!” I called and called for him. I waited. He didn’t come. Feeling___42___, I wandered into the living room. I didn’t cry that night. I still couldn’t believe that he was___43___.
When I got off the bus the next day, the___44___at home was deafening. Finally, my sobs (哭泣) bubbled up and erupted (喷发) like lava (熔岩) from a volcano. I couldn’t stop___45___. I hadn’t even petted him when I left.___46___could I have known that was my last chance? I cried until I felt empty inside.
Time passed, and against my will, I started to___47___some things. I realized what little control any of us have over what happens ___48___ a dog. We can do everything right, but___49___things can still happen. But good things can happen too. That’s___50___. The best way to deal with the hard times is to___51___what you need to do to get through them when they come, and to remember that hard times always___52___.
I now deeply understand the “circle of life”. Everyone is born, everyone___53___, and that’s the way it is. If dogs never died, there would be no___54___for others like Belle – my new dog.
Best of all, I realized that Tippy___55___all of my good memories of him. And they come to me every time I call!
