There was a time when I thought my dad didn’t know a thing about being a good father. I couldn’t   36  him ever saying the words “I love you.” It seems to me his only purpose in life was to say “  37  ” to anywhere I wanted to go and anything I wanted to do, including getting a   38 . Some parents bought their kids cars when they got their driver’s licenses. Not my dad ---- he said that I’d have to get a job and buy my own.
So that is what I did. I got a job at a very nice restaurant and   39  every penny I could and   40  I had enough to buy my car, I did! The day I brought that car home, my dad was the first one I wanted to   41  to. “Look, dad, a car of my own. If you ever want a ride, I’ll only   42 you five dollars.” I offered with a smile.
“I see,” was all he said.
One day, there was something wrong with my father’s truck. So he needed a   43  to work. The sun wasn’t even up when we left the house ,   44  it was already getting warm out. It was going to be a(n)   45  day. As I dropped my dad off, I   46  him, dressed in his work clothes, getting his   47  from the truck (车尾箱) of my car. Watching his sun-weathered face, and even from a distance I could tell there were   48  lines than I ever remembered being there before. I realized how hard my dad works for the family. My father is a cement finisher(水泥修整工).
In that instant, it  49  to me that he actually got down on his hands and knees to sweat over hot concrete to make a living for his family. And he did this day in and day out,   50  hot it got. Never, not once, had I hear him   51  about it. To him we were “worth” it. And never once did he “charge” us for it.
When he closed the trunk, his tools set off to the side, he walked over to my window to   52  me five dollars. I rolled down the window and said “Good-bye, dad. Keep your five dollars. It’s my   53 . Don’t work too hard. I love you.”
His   54  met mine, then glanced away in the direction of his waiting tools, he   55  his throat and said, “Oh, and… me, too.”

There was a woman, about 30 years old, married with two children. She had grown up in a home where she was constantly criticized and often treated unfairly by her parents. As a result, she was negative and fearful, and had no confidence at all.
One day, she was hit by a car. When she awoke, she found herself in a hospital. She could still speak, but had no recollection of any part of her past life. She was a total amnesiac! Her husband and children visited her daily, but she did not know them.
Determined to understand what had happened to her, she began reading medical textbooks and studying in the specialized area of amnesia and memory loss. She met and discussed with specialists in this field. Eventually she wrote a paper on her condition. Not long afterward, she was invited to address a medical conference to deliver her paper, answer questions about her amnesia, and share her experiences and ideas. During this period, something amazing happened. She became a genuinely positive, confident, outgoing woman, well informed, and very much in demand as a speaker and authority in the medical profession. All memory of her negative childhood had been wiped out. She changed her thinking and changed her life.
Each person comes into the world with no thoughts or ideas at all, and everything that a person thinks and feels is learned from babyhood onward. The adult becomes the sum total of everything he or she learns, feels, and experiences while growing up.
Everyone is born with no self-concept at all. Every idea, opinion, feeling, attitude, or value you have as an adult is the result of an idea or impression you took in and accepted as true. When you believe something to be true, it becomes true for you, whatever the fact may be. You are not what you think you are, but what you think, you are.

Four Simple Keys to Transform Your Life
The Power of Choice.Every one of us makes countless choices every day.Every choice we make has an impact on our lives.Even insignificant choices can affect what we experience and how we feel. When hunger strikes, we can reach for a healthy, nutritious snack, or we can choose the sugar high of junk food. The more important the decision, the greater its effect. For instance, how do I act towards that person who treated me badly? Do I generally choose to be passive, or do I actively set clear intentions and create what I want in my life? Every choice we make, however big or small, affects us in some way.
How Do You Make Choices? If you are interested in living a richer, fuller life, there is a foundation upon which you can base all of your decisions which can make life better not only for you, but also for those around you. This foundation is to choose based on what's best for all.Imagine a world where every parent, spouse(配偶), friend, teacher, business person, and politician truly did their best to choose what's best for all involved in every decision they made. We would certainly live in a more caring, supportive world.
It's the Intention."But how do I know what is really best?" you might ask.The answer is simple. It doesn't matter. What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention beind your choice. What matters is that whatever decision you make, you are clear in your intention of choosing based on what's best for all.If it later turns out that you made what appears to have been a bad choice, there's no need for guilt.Knowing that you did your best to choose with a sincere desire for what's best for all, your conscience stays clear and open. This then allows you to more easily learn from your mistakes, and to live with a clear heart and mind.
What's Best for Me, Too! Choosing what's best does not mean you have to always sacrifice yourself for others. An overly(过度的) exhausted mother can lose her temper easily. Some time off for this mother might seem selfish, yet in the long run, it can help her to be a better mother to her children. So as we move through each day of our lives, let us remember to include ourselves as we do our best to choose what's best for all.
小题1:Which of the following is FALSE?

A.To be interested in a richer, fuller life.
B.To make life better for ourselves.
C.To imagine a world where everyone did their best.
D.To choose based on what's best for all.
小题3:Why does the author say, "What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention behind your choice."?
A.Because the choice you make is not important.
B.Because you may have made a bad choice.
C.Because this allows you to stay clear and improve.
D.Because there is no need for guilt.
小题4:How to choose what is best for us?
A.We need to devote all our life to others.
B.We need to put away some time for ourselves.
C.We need to sacrifice ourselves for others.
D.We need to be selfless every minute.

One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts,it came without wrap(包装).
On September 11 th , 1 958,Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying, “I promised you a gift, and here it is.” What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own.I played with it day and night. I sang to it, I told it stories.I told it over and over how much I loved it!
One morning, however,I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it.Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days,I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as “hopeless”,“pitiful",and “dying”, which sounded Ominous
Christmas was coming, “Don’t expect any presents this year,” Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. “If your baby brother lives, that’ll be Christmas enough.” As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. I’d never seen him cry before.
The phone rang early on Christmas morning.Dad jumped out of bed to answer it.From my bedroom I heard him say, “What? He’s all right?” He hung up and shouted upstairs. “The hospital said we can bring Richard home!” “Thank God!” I heard Mum cry.
From the window upstairs,I watched my parents rush out to the car.I had never seen them so happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty: they were filled with love !

Last year, I lost my best friend in high school. It seemed that everyone else’s life could just continue on in its  36  way, but mine couldn't. I wasn't sure how I was going to be able to face  37  and their gossip at school. I was forced to  38  my routine on Monday morning as usual. In the evening I returned home from school  39  completely defeated. All I wanted to do was  40  into bed and wallow(沉迷于)in my own self-pity. I pulled back the covers on my bed and  41  a pile of cards left by my dad. Each card included a(n)  42  that it was to be opened on a  43  night that week.
I made it through that week  44  my father. Each card  45  to say just what I needed to hear. Tuesday’s card said, “The past is painful to think about and the  46  is impossible to imagine. Don't try. Just take it one minute at a time.” On Wednesday my mood  47  when I read, “What you are feeling now is  48  and normal. It still feels very bad, but it is part of the healing  49 .” Friday’s card contained a poem he wrote. The last lines made me smile through my tears. “Whatever special  50  you face along life’s way, may you  51  that you will find the best in every day.” I was instructed to open the last card  52  the party I went to on Saturday night. In it he wisely reminded me to  53 . “The world isn't so bad after a good laugh. The more you laugh, the more you heal.” Each card was signed, “Love, Dad.”
My world once collapsed (fell down) but I  54  the difficult breakup eventually. It owed to my dad, who made his  55  known when he couldn't be present.
