Deserts are found where there is little rainfall or where rain for a whole year falls in only a few weeks' time. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive if the rain is spread throughout the year. If it falls within one or two months and the rest of the year is dry, those plants may die and a desert may form.

Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sand across the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high.

_________________________. In the deserts of the southwestern United States, cliffs (悬崖) and deep valleys were formed from thick mud that once lay under a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up. Wind, sand, rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing –-very, very slowly ---as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock.

Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and insects that have adapted to life in the desert. During the heat of the day a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.

根据首段“...many plants to survive if the rain is spread throughout the year”可知,如果雨水分布于全年而不是集中在一两个月的话,很多植物就可以在沙漠里生存。全年干旱的话,许多植物无法存活,排除A;根据第一句中的“Deserts are found ...where rain for a whole year falls in only a few weeks' time”可知,降水集中在几周内的地方常形成沙漠,排除B;根据“Deserts are found where there is little rainfall”可知,降水很少的地方往往形成沙漠,排除C;故选D

根据第二段“Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sand across the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years,”可知,沙丘形成于风力作用,风携带沙子在沙漠中移动,沙子逐渐堆积成沙丘;根据第三段可知,C项是悬崖和山谷形成的原因;根据“Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller”可知,D项是沙子形成的原因,故选A

根据首段首句“Deserts are found where there is little rainfall or where rain for a whole year falls in only a few weeks' time.”可知,沙漠里也会有降水,但是降水很少或降水不均,排除A;根据第二段“Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high.”可知,大部分的沙丘只有几英尺高,但并不是全部的沙丘都是高几英尺,排除C;根据第三段“Wind, sand, rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks.”

A study notes that Some children are natural-born bosses. They have a strong need to make decisions, manage their environment, and lead rather than follow. Stephen Jackson, a Year One student, "operates under the theory of what's mine is mine and what's yours is mine," says his mother."The other day I bought two new Star Wars light sabers (剑). Later, I saw Stephen with the two new ones while his brogher was using the beat-up ones."

"Examine the extended family, and you'll probably find a bossy grandparent, aunt, uncle or cousin in every generation. It's a common inheritable trait," says Russell Barkley, a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina. Other children who may not be particularly bossy can gradually gain control when they sense their parents are weak, hesitant, or in disagreement with each other.

Whether it's inborn nature or developed character at work, too much control in the hands at the young isn't healthy for children or the family, Fear is at the root of a lot of bossy behavior, says family psychologist John Taylor. Children, he says in his book From Defiance to Cooperation, "have secret feelings of weakness" and "a desire to feel safe." It's the parents' role to provide that protection.

When a "boss child" doesn't learn limits at home, the stage is set for a host of troubles outside the family. The overly willful and unbending child may have trouble obeying teachers or coaches, for example, or trouble keeping friends. It can be pretty lonely as the top dog if no one likes your bossy ways.

"I see more and more parents giving up their power," says Barkley, who has studied bossy behavior for more than 30 years."They bend too far because they don't want to be as strict as their own parents were. But they also feel less confident about their parenting skills. Their kids, in turn, feel more anxious."

【3】The study on bossy behavior implies that parents _____.

A. should not set limits for their children

B. should give more power to their children

C. should be strict with their children properly

D. should let children find sense of safety by themselves

【4】It can be inferred from the last two paragraphs that bossy children may become

A.relaxed and confident B. hesitant and weak

C.lonely and anxious D.willful and unbending

Do you know when the ancient Olympic Games begin? It was in the year 776 BC. They were held at Olympia in Greece every four years, for almost 12 centuries, until AD 394.

Some of the sports from the ancient Olympics are still seen today, such as the long jump, wrestling and running. 在古代奥运会上,按照传统,运动员都是男性,and they had to compete wearing no clothes. Today, both male and female athletes from around the world can take part, no matter what nation they come from.

The contemporary Olympics were first held in 1896, in Athens(雅典). It was a Frenchman, Pierre de Coubertin, who brought the Olympics back to life. He dreamt that the Olympics would make it possible for people of all countries to live side by side in peace. …
