14.It was once thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and/or heavy automobile traffic.Today,we know that although  these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is actually worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade,a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the entire eastern half of the United States and led to health warnings even in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be affected by air pollution. Some scientists feel that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a"greenhouse effect"-----holding in heat reflected from the earth and raising the world's average temperature. If this view is correct and the world's temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York,Boston,Miami, and New Orleans will be under water.
Another view, less widely held,is that increasing particulate (废气排往空中而形成的微粒、颗粒)matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth's temperature─a result that would be equally disastrous.A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to new ice age and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. At present we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report prepared by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very likely).Perhaps,if we are very lucky, the two tendencies willoffset each other and the world's temperature will stay about the same as it is now.

A.lowering the world's temperature merely a few degrees would lead many major farming areas to disaster
B.raising the world's temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earth
C.almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decade
D.the world's temperature will remain constant in the years to come
35.This passage is mainly concerned withC.
A.the greenhouse effect
B.the burning of fossil fuels

It was once thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and/or heavy automobile traffic."
A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to new ice age and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas."

10.Science has a lot of uses.It can uncover laws of nature,cure diseases,make bombs,and help bridges to stand up.Indeed science is so good at what it does that there's always a temptation (诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful.David Brooks,author of The Social Animal:The Hidden Sources of Love,Character,and Achievement,appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.
Brooks gained fame for several books.His latest book The Social Animal,however,is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books.It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics.The book focuses on big questions:What has science revealed about human nature?What are the sources of character?And why are some people happy and successful while others aren't?
To answer these questions,Brooks surveys a wide range of disciplines.Considering this,you might expect the book to be a dry recitation (背诵) of facts.But Brooks has structured his book in an unorthodox (非常规的),and perhaps unfortunate way.Instead of introducing scientific theories,he tells a story,within which he tries to make his points,perhaps in order to keep the reader's attention.So as Harold and Erica,the hero and heroine in his story,live through childhood,we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction.Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.
On the whole,Brooks'story is acceptable if uninspired.As one would expect,his writing is mostly clear and,to be fair,some chapters stand out above the rest.I enjoyed,for instance,the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own.While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters,the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere.These problems partly involve Brooks'attempt to translate his tale into science.

56.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?(No more than 10words)The purpose of writing The Social Animal./The main topics of the book.Or:The weighty topics in"The Social Animal",written by Brooks.
57.Why does Brooks use a story to introduce scientific theories?(No more than 15words)Because he tries to make his points through the story or keep reader's attention.Or:To make his points and keep the reader's attention.
58.According to The Social Animal,how can we learn about the science of child development?(No more than 10words)As Harold and Erica live through their childhood.Or:By reading the story of Harold and Erica.Or:By following the story of living through childhood.
59.Please explain the underlined word"weighty"in English.(No more than 1word)Serious.Or:Important.Or:Significant.Or:Great.Or:Big.Or:Crucial.Or:Heavy….
60.Do you like Brooks'way of dealing with science in The Social Animal?Why?(No more than 20words)Yes,I do.Because he introduces scientific theories through a story, which is much easier for people to understand..
