题目内容

20.Early one morning,more than a hundred years ago,an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep.He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem:It seemed impossible to get the thread to run around the needle without any problems.
Though he was tired,Howe slept badlyHe turned and turned.Then he had a dream.He dreamt that he had been caught by terrible savages whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine.When he tried to do so,Howe ran into the same problem as before.The thread kept getting caught around the needle.The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe.They came up towards him with their spears raised.But suddenly the inventor noticed something.There was a hole in the tip of each spear.The inventor awoke from the dream,realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem.Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle,he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle.This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practised sewing machine.
Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way.Thomas Edison,the inventor of the electric light,said his best ideas came into him in dreams.So did the great physicist Albert Einstein.Charlotte Brone also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.
To know the value of dreams,you have to understand what happens when you are asleep.Even then,a part of your mind is still working.This unconscious(无意识的),but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day.It stores all sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed.It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake.However,the unconscious par acts in a special way.It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first.This is why dreams are sometimes called"secret messages to us".

21.The problem Howe was trying to solve wasD.
A.what kind of thread to use
B.how to design a needle which would not break
C.where to put the needle
D.how to stop the thread from getting caught around the needle
22.Thomas Edison is spokenof becauseB.
A.he also tried to invent a sewing machine
B.he got some of his ideas from dreams
C.he was one of Howe's best friends
D.he also had difficulty in falling asleep
23.Dreams are sometimes called"secret messages to ourselves"becauseA.
A.strange images are used to communicate ideas
B.images which have no meaning are used
C.we can never understand the real meaning
D.only specially trained people can understand them.

It seemed impossible to get the thread to run around the needle without any problems",这似乎是不可能做到的,令线在针周围毫无问题的转,因此他的困难是如何阻止线被针抓住;故选D.
32.B.细节理解题.根据文章第一段"Thomas Edison,the inventor of the electric light,said his best ideas came into him in dreams",Thomas Edison发明了电灯,说他的最好的想法是在梦中形成的;故选B.
33.A.推理判断题.根据文章最后一段"This unconscious,but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day"这种无意识的但仍然活跃的部分理解你的经历并且继续去解决你白天所遇到的问题,可知梦境的神秘是奇怪的想法被用来交流思想;故选A.

16.The defeat of Lee Sedol, the world's strongest Go (围棋) player,by a Google artificial intelligence (AI) program, looks like another milestone towards a world where computers can do almost anything a human can.It is not. There are uncountable things that only a human can do,and that no computer seems close to.The problem is that the purely human things are not economically useful to anyone. The things that computers can be taught to do are by contrast economically fantastic. But even the most powerful programs are not human, just as a shovel (铲车).They have no feelings. What they have is power, but this power is growing at a rate that should frighten us a ll.
It might be less frightening if computers were truly intelligent, but even the most powerful networks are less human than monstrous Martians (火星人).Their power will be used to make money for the firms that finance their development, and then for others quick and clever enough to take advantage of the new world. It is far more likely that they will increase inequality and still further remove the middle classes as we move towards an hourglass (以金钱来衡量的) society in which everyone is either very rich or very poor and likely indebted.
One of the ill effects of the spread of more intelligent computer networks is,at the same time, the spread of what might be called artificial stupidity. If AI is employed largely to replace unskilled labour,it is most productive when labour is kept unskilled or redefined that way.So much of the work in service industries is now simplified until it might be automated (自动化).And robots will never need pensions.AI is slowly reducing skilled work, like some forms of medical diagnosis (诊断),at the same time,as older doctors complain that the traditional human skills of diagnosis are falling out of medical training. The belief that everything worthwhile can be measured and then managed is far more damaging to humanity than the threat of artificial intelligence on its own.
But no victory in complicated Go games can bring us closer to truly human-like computers.

15.There is a small shop about 200meters from where I live that sells groceries,meat and other basic necessities.About 10years ago,there was a beggar who would go into the shop every day and ask the owner for a (36)C.The owner,although he would love to help,simply didn't have any jobs available,so he kept (37)D the man's request.
This situation continued daily for a few months,until the owner (38)A to give the homeless man a job which (39)B sweeping outside the shop.Every single day from 5am,the homeless man was there doing the very best he could for the (40)C,and it did earn him some pennies.(41)D,the owner saw how good a job the man was doing and gave him a job working as a cashier.He was watched closely to make sure that he didn't (42)B any of the money received from the sales.He was still homeless,after all.The homeless man did a/an (43)A job as a cashier for over 2years,and did such a good job that he was promoted to(44)D the finance for the whole shop.
To my knowledge,this was the arrangement up until 2years ago,when the owner (45)C.In his will,he only had one request,to give the whole shop to the now stable,"homeless"man.Now,I could walk into that shop and see him working as hard as ever,with his own business that is still (46)B and active 10years after getting his job as a sweeper.

8.It was shortly before midnight,and Dr Patricia was getting ready for bed.The phone rang on the end of the line was a woman about to break a promise.
The woman was her mother's neighbour.Flora Harris had made the neighbour swear she wouldn't tell her daughter she'd a heart attack and was in the hospital,for fear her daughter would worry.The neighbour wisely decided to disobey orders.
Harris desperately wanted to get to the hospital immediately,but she couldn't.She lives in Washington,D.C,and her mother lives in California.
For the past year a half,Harris has gone to Los Angeles every other month to take care of her mother.Flora Harris takes care of her husband,James,who's 91and has Alzheimer's disease.They live in their own home,and a caregiver comes to help them a few hours a day.

In some ways,Harris is lucky.She has the resources to make the trips to Los Angeles.Plus,Harris is a doctor who treats the elderly.
"But it's still tough,"she said."I can foresee what the next few years are going to look like,and it's not a pretty picture.My father's going to need diapers (尿布).There will come a time when he won't recognize me and he's easily excited.I worry he's going to be violent and hurt my mother."
So what do you do when you live a continent away for your aging,sick parents?There are no magic answers.You can hire someone to help,but you can't outsource it completely.

28.Why was the woman thought to have broken a promise?D
A.She failed to take care of Flora.
B.She was not supposed to call Harris at midnight.
C.She couldn't go to hospital on time.
D.She told Harris about her mother's illness.
29.What can we learn about Patricia Harris from the passage?A
A.She thinks it harder to look after her parents the next few years.
B.He parents cannot take themselves at all.

B.The rate of heart disease is high in America.
C.It is difficult to tend aging parents from afar.
D.Harris advises on tending aging parents from afar.
2.The current Ebola (埃博拉病毒) outbreak in western and central Africa has infected at least 3,069 people,including 1,552 dead,making it the largest outbreak in history.Ebola is a deadly virus-about 60percent of people infected with it have died.
How is Ebola doing its harm?
When a person becomes infected with Ebola,the virus damages the body's immune (免疫的) cells,which defend against infection,said a researcher at Lancaster University.But if a person's immune system can stand up to this attack,then he is more likely to survive the disease.
The patients that survive it best are those who don't get such a bad disadvantage in immune system.But if the body isn't able to get rid of this attack,then the immune system becomes less able to regulate (调节) itself.This means the immune system is more likely to run out of control,leading to a drop in blood pressure,multi-organ failure and eventually death.
What are the common symptoms of the disease?
Fever.Headache.Joint and muscle aches.Weakness.Diarrhea.Vomiting.Stomach pain.Lack of appetite.Chills.Rash.Redness in the eyes.Hiccups.Cough.Sore throat.Chest pain.Difficult breathing or swallowing.Bleeding inside and outside of the body.
How to prevent the spread of Ebola?
Ebola can be spread primarily via direct contact with patients, specifically the blood and fluids of an infected patient.
We should avoid contact with infected patients and objects such as clothing,bedding,and needles used by them.Avoid areas where infections have been reported.For now,the disease has only been confirmed in central and West Africa,four cases in America and Europe.Avoid eating wild-caught bush meat.Researchers have suspected that the disease came to humans via animals,probably through the meat of primates(灵长类).If you're in an area where the disease has been reported,avoid purchasing,eating,or handling wild game to stay on the safe side.
Wear protective medical clothing if you're around infected patients.Extreme caution is necessary.Hospital workers must use masks,gloves,goggles,and gowns,which needed to be worn at all times if you're around infected patients.
How Do People Survive Ebola?
Doctors don't know for certain who will survive Ebola,and there is no specific treatment or cure for the disease.Although in the minority,some people do recover from infection.
Our suggestions include:
Maintain your electrolytes (电解质) and body liquid.Sports drinks can be used.Monitor your blood pressure and control it if necessary.Dropping blood pressure may be a serious sign of infection.Breathe in an oxygen-rich environment.Quickly address any symptoms of infection.Be honest about when and where you're feeling pain.
