One of the most common questions parents ask me is,“How,in this competitive world, can you raise kind children” My answer is “to begin by being a adult”. When your child you go the extra mile to help a friend,he will naturally this as the right way to live.
We are mirrors for our . When children observe your examples of kindness, they'll know to begin. One day,I mentioned that I had a ,and my 8yearold daughter upstairs to run a bath for me. You know who her stomachaches in just such a way.
Kindness is a quality that isn't often in our schools,so we must make a strong effort to acknowledge it . A busy mother I know is making a(an) to acknowledge her young son's kindness. She says,“Once I was with my son on a bus,and he sat next to a classmate using a wheelchair, I was amazed at helpful and considerate he was,and I was to praise him when we got home.”
Kindness, compassion(同情),and love from understanding and respect, and in turn create more of . It would help to acknowledge kids' thoughtfulness instead of competition. In an achievementoriented (成绩导向型) culture,we may focus more grades and sports victories than on of the heart. the time to acknowledge kind actions as having true worth. When I was growing up, I was ashamed to be seen with my father. He was severely disabled and very short, and when we would walk together, his hand on my arm for balance, people would stare. If he ever noticed or was bothered, he never let on.
It was difficult to coordinate(协调)our steps—his slow, mine impatient—and because of that, we didn’t say much as we went along. But as we started out, he always said, “You set the pace. I will try to adjust to you.”
He never talked about himself as an object of sympathy, nor did he show any envy of the more fortunate or able. What he looked for in others was a “good heart”, and if he found one, the owner was good enough for him. I believe that is a proper standard by which to judge people, even though I still don’t know accurately what a “good heart” is.
Unable to join in many activities, my father still tried to participate in some way. I now know he participated in some things indirectly through me, his only son. When I played ball (poorly), he “played” too. When I joined the Navy, he “joined” too. And when I came home on leave, he saw to it that I visited his office. Introducing me, he was really saying, “This is my son, but it is also me, and I could have done this, too, if things had been different.” Those words were never said aloud.
He has been gone many years now, but I think of him often. I wonder if he sensed my unwillingness to be seen with him during our walks. If he did, I am sorry I never told him how sorry I was, how unworthy I was, how I regretted it. I think of him when I complain about small affairs, when I am envious of another’s good fortune, when I don’t have a “good heart”.
At such times I put my hand on his arm to regain my balance, and say, “You set the pace. I will try to adjust to you.”

Along with more than 300 other seniors, I marched into the stadium on the afternoon of May 10. The audience burst into deafening cheers, whistling and clapping.
It was as if a Hollywood superstar had walked on stage. And indeed, every single senior that day was a star of the once-in-a-lifetime moment—the commencement.
Seated, I waited anxiously for the opening address. As a foreign exchange student, I was not able to receive a diploma. However, I still had the wonderful feeling of being part of things. Like the other graduates, I was dressed in marron cap and gown(方帽长袍).
Our principal, Mr. Glover, delivered a short, warm greeting. The US national anthem followed and then, hands on chests, a solemn Pledge of Allegiance(对美国的忠孝宣誓).
Students who had excelled academically gave farewell speeches. Then came the core (核心) of the commencement. Hundreds of names were announced. Each graduate walked across the stage to receive his or her diploma from the principal. From the different cheers each graduate got, we had the funny sense that it was a kind of competition of who could cheer the loudest.
To be honest, the presentation of diplomas got boring. But it wasn’t boring for those receiving the diploma: they would treasure the moment the principal placed the sacred brown document in their hands for the rest of their lives.
A new page in the book of that person’s life had turned. They were glimpsing their futures: futures of challenge, hardship, perhaps loneliness too, which would take all of their courage.

I used to believe in the American Dream, which meant a job, a mortgage, credit cards, success. I wanted it and worked toward it like everyone else, all of us   51  chasing the same thing.
One year, through a series of unhappy events, it all fell   52 . I found myself homeless and alone. I had my truck and $56. I   53  the countryside for some place I could rent for the   54  possible amount. I came upon a shabby house four miles up a winding mountain road over the Potomac River in West Virginia. It was   55 , full of broken glass and rubbish. I found the owner, rented it, and   56  a corner to camp in.
The locals knew nothing about me, but slowly, they started teaching me the   57  of being a neighbor. They dropped off blankets, candles, and tools, and began sticking around to chat. They started to teach me a belief in a   58  American Dream—not the one of individual achievement but of neighborliness.
What I had believed in, all those things I thought were   59  for a civilized life, were nonexistent in this place.   60  on the mountain, my most valuable possessions were my   61  with my neighbors.
Four years later, I moved back into   62 . I saw many people were having a really hard time,
63  their jobs and homes. I managed to rent a big enough house to   64  a handful of people. There are four of us now in the house, but over time I’ve had nine people come in and move on to other places. We’d all be in shelters if we hadn’t banded together.
The American Dream I believe in now is a shared one. It’s not so much about what I can get for myself; it’s about   65  we can all get bytogether.

In a world where comparisons happen non-stop, it is difficult to look outside yourself and to ever be   36  with who you are. There’s always someone who’s a bit   37 . The only solution is to reach   38  and measure against what Warren Buffett calls your own inner yardstick. There is no more   39  measure for comparison than who your were yesterday, last week or last decade, when you were at your   40 .
Nothing useful ever comes from comparison to others. Either you see yourself as better than someone and you get   41 , or you see someone else as better than you and you feel like all your hard work is for   42 . It is a fool’s game. Not one of us is exactly   43 . The only direct and honest comparison is   44  yourself. Everything else is apples to oranges.
My opinion is that you are only   45  to compare yourself to someone else if their life  46  is the same as your own. Good luck finding that   47 . And one thing is for sure. No matter how hard you work and how dedicated you are, there will always be someone who can run a little faster, jump a little higher, score a little better or look a little nicer in a swimsuit. And if there’s not, you can   48  someone is coming up fast   49  you. So how can you always win in life? Become your best   50 .
Having an image of your most recent past limits is the perfect thing to   51  you to the next level. If you ran 7 flights of stairs yesterday, then do 8 today. Who   52  if the guy next to you did 15? It doesn’t make a bit of   53 . You are a more   54  person today than you were yesterday. Your own   55  is all you need.
