  Everyone would like to be remembered. A few people even try to do something that no one else in history has ever done. Sometimes these people have their names recorded in Guinness(吉尼斯)World Records.

  Often a group of people do something unusual. One such team paddled(用浆划)a bathtub(浴缸)145 kilometers for 24 hours. This group had 13 members. They paddled their bathtub on a river near Ashford,Great Britain on May 28th and 29th,1983. A month later,a racing team of hospital-bed pushers in Avon,Great Britain pushed(推)a hospital bed 16 kilometers in just 50 minutes ! However,the distance record for hospital-bed pushing is still held by the men of Bruntsfield Bedding Center. This team from Edinburgh pushed a hospital bed 5,203 kilometers in 1979. It took the team 35 days to cover the distance.

  Another group of record-makers held the highest dinner party in the world. Nine people from Sydney,Australia,climbed Mountain Huascaran on June 28th,1989. The climbers carried a dinner table,chairs,and a meal up the mountain. When they reached the top,they all put on warm suits for dinner.

  People all over the world are trying hard to do something unusual to make a record. Now all the records are kept in Guinness World Records.

  It was two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bike. Her Barbi bike was just too old,and it needed repairing as well.

 In choosing Steven Chu as his energy secretary (;能源4卩长).Barack Obama has chosen one of the most prominent U. S. scientists of using science to deal with global warming(全球变暖).

  Steven Chu was born in St. Louis,Missouri,in 1948. His father was a college teacher.At that time,they were only the third Chinese family to live there. In high school,Chu played tennis and was on the school club. He took his first physics class in his senior year at Garden City High school and became interested in it.

  Steven Chu got his first doctor's degree in maths and physics in 1970. Then he went to California for another doctor's degree.  "Be proud of what you do," my father always told me , " whether you are a boss or a cleaner. ” When I was 15, I got a summer job in a hospital. I was told that my duties would include(包括;)sweeping floors. I smiled and remembered Dad's words.

  Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes!The program works because everyone's eyes are different. So in the future,you won't have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You'll just look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.

  The eye-recognition(眼睛识别)program is already being tested in shops and banks in USA,Britain,Spain,Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.

  Scientists are working on other systems,too. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell ! We have already had machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your finger.

  But eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don't change as you get older,or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes,so the program can be up to 94% correct,depending on how good the technology is. Some programs may only be right 51% of the time. In Britian,it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.
