8.Let us consider what we can do for the food problem. The simple way to increase food production, one might suppose,is to bring more land into farmland and put more people to work on it.
But it is proved in some developing countries that this will bring some problems. It will quickly make the soil poorer and destroy forest growth.Furthermore, the people there will always find they need more people to work on this land to produce more food.
During the past twenty years, some developing countries ave increased a lot more farmland in their countries, but their populations have in the meantime grown faster, therefore, they are further behind than before. And their food increase has been gained at the cost of using up the rich lands. Many of the lands have become poor lands and are producing less food now.
Meanwhile, farming in the developed countries has produced much more food through improved technology.Since 1940,farmland has been reduced by 7percent in the United States but grain production has jumped by 60percent.The increase in the corn output, thanks to hybrid corn, hasbeen even greater.
The"secret"is to apply fertilizer,in scientific ways,of course. And compared to the developing countries, the populations in developed countries have increased just a little larger than twenty years ago.
On the whole, world population today is increasing at the speed higher than ever before.Every year the population is two percent larger,so that the 6,000,000,000people on the earth today will present another 120,000,000mouths to be fed by the time next year.It is a fearsome thought that this time tomorrow there will be about 330,000persons added to this world population.
What can we do about the increase population or the lack of food to feed such a large, growing population? That's a very important problem before everyone on the earth, young or old,men or women.

Single Parent Family (Mostly the Breadwinner Parent!) A single parent is the one who looks after the child without the assistance of the other parent. The child can be by birth or adoption.Single parent families are often the result of death of another parent, divorce of a couple with children,or child abuse. There's another case where adults who want children but do not have a partner, adopt kids-usually termed as single parent adoption. |
Grandparent-led Family (The Wrinkled Affection!) Lots of grandparents are raising their grandchildren today.Reasons can be varied, like parents'death,or unfit parents. Many grandparents need to go back to their working phase for finding a source of income to raise their grandchildren. |
Blended (混合的) and Step Family (Sometimes the Black Sheep Type!) Two separate families blending together to form a single unit can lead to the creation of a blended or step family.Step families are becoming common in America.Over half of the marriages en in divorce, and many of these individuals prefer getting remarried, thereby creating the step family. It can consist of a new husband,a wife, and their children from previous relationships or marriages. These families have more problems because their kids do not get comfortable, and have adjustment and discipline issues. |
Extended Family (The More,The Merrier!) An extended family is the one that enlarges beyond the immediate family, which can consist of grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and so on,living under a single roof. There are certain advantages to such family groups. The members (especially children) feel more secure and safe due to elder guidance and sharing of resources during a crisis, and have more role models to help maintain desired etiquette and values. |
