3.What do they really mean?
Food manufacturers and retailers are letting shoppers down. This is the view of the CWS,which has just brought out a new report.
According to the report, shoppers believe food labels because they think there are strict regulations in place.(50)E.So the food industry can get away with all sorts of tricky strategies to make products look bigger and sound better than they are.
The report has identified the different ways in which shoppers are misled.(51)G.Descriptions on packaging are sometimes inaccurate in an attempt to oversell the product. One example given in the report is the phrase"haddock fillets",used for a product that is in fact cut from big blocks of fish rather than individual slices.
(52)A.These include"traditional","wholesome",or"premium".The claim that a brand is"90% fat-free"hides the fact that it contains 10% fat, which above recommended levels.Phrases such as"free from preservatives"make a virtue out of a normal attribute of food.
Labels have a wide variety of text sizes on them. You sometimes need a magnifying glass to read the small print.(53)D.
Another deliberate type of misinformation lies in the image. Many pictures on packets use small plates to make the product look bigger.(54)C.
However, misleading messages on packaging could soon be a thing of the past. The CWS recently produced a code which,if used, would end the current inaccuracies and half truths. It has called on the government to support it as a way of improving food standards.

A.Meaningless adjectives are often used to give a positive message.
B.An officer says the labels will receive very serious consideration.
C.Photographs are sometimes retouched to achieve the same effect.
D.By contrast, the hard sell information is given emphasis.
E.The rules are,in reality,very weak at present.
F.This result has not pleased the food industry.
G.The most common of these is poor labeling.
1.On my school days I spent nearly all the vacations with my grandmother,Mama Lenn Yaho.My Mama Lenn Yaho was a farmer with a (41)A back that made it seem like she was always leaning forward to examine something.Early in the morning,she set out to the farm.I would skip (42)D alongside trying to keep up.On our way,along the muddy footpaths that wound through the village,Mama Lenn Yaho would (43)C everyone we passed.
These were the (44)B greetings."Did you wake up on the right foot this morning?Did you sleep well?"Then,the more personalized greetings."Are the grandchildren in good health?And what about their parents?"If she passed the (45)A person upon our return later,she would greet him/her again.

8.The deep ocean is considered to be anything below the photic zone (透光层),which only extends a few hundred meters down into the ocean's waters,and this huge area is home to all of the deep ocean fish.These fish have special capabilities that allow them to live at high pressures and to survive cold ocean water.Most of these deep ocean fish cannot live in any other environment so not much is known about their behavior.
There is no natural light in the deepest part of the ocean so fish there have different ways of knowing what is going on around them.Some deep ocean fish have very large eyes which have adapted to the darkness.Other fish have feelers (触须) which help them to find food.The angler fish is so named because it has a fishingpoletype object which can move like a worm to attract prey(猎物).
Because there is no photosynthesis(光合作用)under the ocean,any plant matter that fish may need for nutrients has to sink down from above.On the whole,this makes deep ocean fish smaller in overall size and weight but with larger mouths than those who live higher up in shallow water.
Many deep ocean fish have to float around waiting for something to eat to pass by.There are thousands of species of deep ocean fish and most of these are darkly colored to mix into the surroundings so as not to attract enemies.
The further down into the ocean you go,the more you will find different kinds of fish.For example,the bottomdwelling sharks spend most of their time resting on the ocean bottom.They must keep moving at all times so that air can be forced through their lungs.They wait for their prey to come along and suddenly attack them whenever possible.If these sharks stopped swimming they would die.

32.Which of the following statements about the deep ocean is NOT true according to the passage?A
A.It's a hundred meters above the photic zone.
B.The pressure is high there.
C.The water is cold there.
D.There's no natural light in the deepest part.
33.Compared to the fish that live in shallow water,most deep ocean fish areB.
A.small but heavy     B.small and light
C.long and heavy      D.small but long
34.We can learn from the passage that most of the deep ocean fish haveD.
A.long feelers    B.plants as food
C.large eyes      D.darkly colored bodies
35.You would most probably read this article in a journal ofB.
A.fashion             B.Science
C.entertainment       D.health.
