John turned to the lawyer for help改为定语从句,介词to提前只能用whom指代人因此填(1). to; (2). whom (3). turned (4). for

(1). lose (2). heart

因此填in trouble

be sentenced to是固定短语。 因此填was sentenced to

As a matter of fact/In fact是固定短语。 As a matter of fact/In fact

有there be句型,time做先行词,后面的定语从句很完整,用when引导因此填there was a time when

因此填where we learned/learnt

(1). The reason why; (2). that

(1). for, (2). which (3). that

因此填with the help of whom

One of the most famous buildings in the United States is Carnegie Hall, the home of classical and popular music concerts in New York. Carnegie Hall is known not just for its beauty and history, but also for its amazing sound. Carnegie Hall is named after Andrew Carnegie, who paid for its construction. Construction of Carnegie Hall began in 1890 and the official opening night was on May 5,1891.

The hall was owned by the Carnegie family until 1924 when it was sold to Robert E Simon. The building became very old and in 1960, the new owner made plans to destroy it and build an office block. Isaac Stem led a group of people who fought to save Carnegie Hall and finally, the city of New York bought it for $5 million. It was then fixed up between 1983 and 1995.

Advertisements and stories in newspapers about how Carnegie Hall needed help to recover its history led people to send in old concert programmes and information from all over the world. Over 12,000 concert programmes were received and with these it was possible to make a proper record of Carnegie Hall's concert history.

Carnegie Hall is actually made up of several different halls, but the Main Hall, now called the Isaac Stem Auditorium,is the most famous. The hall itself can hold an audience of 2,804 in five levels of seating.

Because the best and most famous musicians of all time have played at Carnegie Hall, it is the dream of most musicians who want to be great to play there. This has led to a very old joke which is now part of Carnegie Hall's history. Question: “How do I get to Carnegie Hall?” Answer: “Practice, practice, practice.”

Back in 2003 an 86-year-old man drove his Buick through a crowded farmers’ market. Nine people were killed. More than fifty-four people were hurt, fourteen with serious injuries. When he finally stopped, the 86-year-old man got out his car and screamed at people to get out of the way. No alcohol or drugs were found in his system. Apparently, he was just old and confused.

This is a frightening accident, and it is not a rare one. There are many examples of elderly drivers driving into swimming pools, houses, storefronts, or worse.

In our teenage years, we all heard “driving is not a right; it’s a privilege.” That is still true, and there comes an age when driving is no longer a privilege that can be allowed. After a certain age, eyesight and dementia(痴呆) are very serious concerns. Undoubtedly, these age-related problems affect some older adults’ driving ability. By the time a person is between eighty-five and ninety years old, his or her driving privilege should be examined.

Licensing laws vary greatly from state to state, and it’s time for a national law on the maximum age limit for driving. The motivation for this law is safety. Another option is to start with laws that ban anyone over the age of eighty-five from driving after sundown, because driving conditions are not as safe as daylight hours. Still another option that may allow elderly drivers to continue driving could be new technology like a voice warning system that cautions drivers on busy streets or at traffic lights. Finally, since there are laws against driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, shouldn’t some prescription drugs also be included? The average age of 85-year-old is undoubtedly taking at least one prescription drug daily.

The thought of an 86-year-old driver with failing eyesight running down the road in a two-ton piece of metal is unsettling to us all. Driving at an advanced age is not only challenging for the elderly drivers, but also it’s dangerous for the rest of us.

【1】The first paragraph is written in order to show_________.

A. the harm of driving at an old age

B. the importance of traffic safety

D. many elderly drivers are careless

【2】The author suggests that there should be new laws against driving __________.

A. over eighty-five

B. between sunset and dawn

C. with the help of voice warning systems

D. under the influence of prescription drugs

【3】The underlined word “unsettling” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “________”.

A. disappointing B. worrying

C. touching D. interesting

【4】Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. How to keep old people safe on the road?

B. Are drivers well protected by licensing laws?

C. Should there be an age limit for elderly drivers?

D. Is driving a right or a privilege for an old person?
