题目内容

13.It is winter in many parts of the world. For some areas, that means snow.Maybe even lots of snow.If you don't have to drive in it or remove it,snow can be very beautiful. When snow covers everything around you,the world looks like a"winter wonderland".That is the name of a very popular song about winter.Richard Smith and Felix Bernard wrote the song back in 1934.There are hundreds of recordings of this happy song.
But winter is not always such a beautiful and happy time. It's cold outside. You try hard to keep warm. The days are darker and shorter. The sun rarely shines. The leaves on the trees are brown. It isn't surprising that some people are sad in winter. And some people dream about being somewhere else where it's warm and pretty-like the state of California. The Mamas and the Papas recorded this famous song"California Dreaming".
During the 1960s,many other famous rock groups released songs about winter. Here is a poetic song by Simon and Garfunkel called"A Hazy Shade of Winter".They sing about life and hope and possibilities.
In 1968,the group Blood,Sweat and Tears recorded this gentle, sad song about winter. They sing about a lost love and forgotten memories in"Sometimes in Winter".
In the early 1990s,Tori Amos wrote and recorded the beautiful song called"Winter".She enjoyed singing about winter when she was a child.
Finally,on a happier note comes this song written and recorded by Fountains of Wayne in 2003.They sing about a snowstorm in a New England town.Nothing unusual there. But instead of being sad or tense about the snow, they write a song about it.

"I can't believe it-Lorenzo Bertolla!They are almost impossible to find.Isn't it beautiful?And it's a lot cheaper than the one Sara bought in Rome."
They leave and you go over to see this incredible sweater.It's nice and the price is right.You've never heard of Lorenzo Bertolla,but those girls looked really stylish.They must know.So,you buy it.You never realize that those young women are employees of an advertising agency.They are actually paid to go from store to store,talking loudly about Lorenzo Bertolla clothes.
Every day we notice what people are wearing,driving and eating.If the person looks cool,the product seems cool,too.This is the secret of undercover marketing.Companies from Ford to Nike are starting to use it.

1.A new study in West Africa shows how farm irrigationsystems powered by the sun can pro-duce more food and money for villagers. The study-in Benin found that solar-powered pumpsare effective in 8upplying water, especially during the long dry season.
Sub-Saharan Africa is the part of the world with the least food security. The United Na-tions Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that more"than one biillion of the world's peo-ple faced hunger last year.Around 265 million of them live'south of the Sahara Desert:Lack of  rainfallis one oftheir main causes offood shortages..
Jennifer Bumey from Stanford University in Califomia led the study. The research team helped build three solar-powered drip irrigation-(滴灌),systems in northem Benin. Between 30 and 35 women used each system to pump water from the ground or a stream. Each woman was responsible for farming her own 120 sqrurre meters of land. They also farmed other land  collectively.
The solar-powered irrigation systems produced an average of nearly two tons of vegetables per montb. During the first year, the women.kept a monthly average of almost rune kilograms of vegetables for home use. They sold the surplus produce at local markets. The eamings greatly increased their ability to buy food during the dry season which can last six to nine months. Peo-ple in the'two villages with the systems were able to eat three to five more servingsof yegetables per day.But making the surplus available at markets also had a wider effect.
The study compared the villages with two others where women farmed with traditional methods like carrying water in buckets. The amount of vegetables eaten in those villages also  increased, though not as much. The researchers note that only four percent of the croplamd in sub-Saharan Africa is irrigated. Using solar power to pump water has higher costs at first. But    the study says it can be more economical in the long term than using fuels like gasoline, diesel  or kerosene. And solar power is environmentally friendly.

8.One Monday morning,Paul and his classmates were in science laboratory for their practical chemistry lesson.The students were going to work in pairs to do an experiment.Before they began,the teacher gave them this description of the different stages of the experiment.
Stage 1:Prepare the equipment:a test tube,a crucible,a Bunsen burner and tongs.
Stage 2:Weigh 5grams of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and put it in a crucible.
Stage 3:Heat 10ml of hydrochloric acid (盐酸) in a test tube.
Stage 4:Pour the warm acid onto the baking soda and continue to heat the mixture.
Result:The acid reacts with the bicarbonate(碳酸氢盐)to form water,carbon dioxide gas and salt.The hotter the mixture,the quicker the reaction.Continue to heat the mixture until the water evaporates,leaving the salt in the crucible.
Paul and his partner followed the instructions and set up their equipment.Paul went to the cupboard to get a bottle of hydrochloric acid.He found that there was only one bottle in the cupboard so he took that.There was no label on the bottle and Paul didn't check with the teacher if it was the right solution.
He measured the liquid and poured it into a test tube.Using tongs to hold the test tube,he heated it over the Bunsen burner.That's when things started to go wrong.The liquid in the test tube was not hydrochloric acid.When it was heated,it formed a thick cloud of white gas.Soon the room was full of this strong smelling white gas.
All the students started coughing and their eyes hurt.The teacher immediately opened the windows and ordered the students to leave the laboratory at once.She realized that the liquid was a crylamide (丙烯酰胺) and that it is poisonous.
Fortunately,nobody was injured in the incident.However,it taught the students and the teacher a good lesson.

D.Finding something unusual happened,you have to leave the laboratory at once.
44.What substance were the students making in the experiment?C
A.Water              B.Carbon dioxide gas
C.Salt               D.Poisonous gas
45.Why did Paul make the mistake?D
A.He went to the cupboard to get the bottle by himself.
B.He found that there was only one bottle in the cupboard so he took that.
C.There was no label on the bottle.
D.Paul didn't check with the teacher that it was the right solution.
46.Why did the teacher send the students out of the classroom?C
A.Because the room was full of this strong smelling white gas.
B.Because all the students started coughing and their eyes hurt.
C.Because the liquid was a crylamide and that it is poisonous.

As I was about to give up,a truck stopped and a man got off.He looked at the situation,made a judgment and went back to take a jack.After about two hours,we finished the job with sweats.We were both dirty.His wife took a large bottle of water for us to wash our hands.

After I said goodbye and started going back to my jeep,the girl ran to me and handed me a tamale(玉米粉蒸肉)for lunch.I thanked them again and walked back to my jeep.When I opened the tamale,what did I find inside?My 20!I ran to the truck and the guy rolled down his window.He started shaking his head,smiled,and with what looked like great concentration said in English,"Today you,tomorrow me."Then he drove away,with his daughter waving to me from the back.
This family, working on a seasonal basis where time is money, took a couple of hours to help a stranger while others passed by quietly.
Since then I've helped many people like the Mexican family.I didn't accept their money.Every time I was able to help,I felt as if I was putting something in the bank.

33.From the passage we can know that.B

2.Why did the chicken cross the road?To get to the other side.
Most people know this joke.But recently,some people have been much more worried about how the grizzly bear and mountain Hon can cross the road.
"Millions of animals die each year on U.S.roads,"the Federal Highway Administration reports.In fact,only about 80ocelots,an endangered wild cat,exist in the U.S.today.The main reason?Roadkill.
"Eco-passages"may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars.They are paths both over and under roads."These eco-passages can be extremely useful,so that wildlife can avoid road accidents,"said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Protection Society.
But do animals actually use the eco-passages?The answer is yes.Paul Beier of Northern Arizona University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an eco-passage that went under a highway.This showed that the lions used the passage.
Builders of eco-passages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees on and around them.Animals seem to be catching on.Animals as different as salamanders(火蜥蜴)and grizzly bears are using the bridges and underpasses.
