With more recognition than Halloween and less than Christmas,Valentine’s Day as an imported festival faces a dangerous situation in China, where it’s caught between forces of tradition and fashion.Valentine’s Day has a natural enemy in China. And it is not the Chinese equivalent, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh month on the lunar calendar, usually around half a year away from February 14.It is the Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year, that will influence the Feast of Saint Valentine.

The real disagreement between East and West probably took place over a century ago, when China’s door was forced open by Western powers and Chinese scholars supported westernization as a means to strengthen our nation's ability to compete. The introduction of the solar calendar and Western measurements was both an acknowledgment of their influence and an effort to be accepted by the world order.

For a full century,we have had two systems running in parallel. When it comes to the eventual outcome, practicality usually beats all other concerns.Laws can help, such as the three traditional festivals of Tomb Sweeping, Dragon Boat and Mid-Autumn gaining legal status in 2008 and giving every Chinese citizen a day off,but laws cannot push what people have no feelings for. Therefore, the celebration or boycott of imported holidays or homegrown ones should be no cause for worry. If they are irrelevant,no social media will change the public's mind; and if they are accepted, there must be a need which they happen to satisfy.

Since we have no global Qin Shihuang to force one system on every country,we can always rely on a dual (双重的) approach by which we share with the outside world on one hand but preserve our own ways of life on the other.

16.Electric cars are dirty.In fact,not only are they dirty,but they might even be much dirtier than their gasoline-powered cousins.
People in California love to talk about"zero-emissions(零排放)vehicles",but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from.Power plants mostly use fire to make it.Aside from the new folks who have their roofs covered with solar cells,we get our electricity from generators(发电机).Generators are fueled by something-usually coal,oil,but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants.There are a few wind farms and geothermal plants as well,but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something.
In other words,those"zero-emissions"cars are likely coal-burning cars.Because the coal is burned somewhere else,it looks clean.It is not true.It's as if the California Greens are covering their eyes-"If I can't see it,it's not happening."Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it.But when you take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity,you waste a nice part of that energy,mostly in the form of wasted heat-at the generator,through the transmission lines,etc.
A gallon of gas may propel your car 25 miles.But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won't get you nearly as far-so electric cars burn more fuel than gas-powered ones.If our electricity came mostly from wind,or geotherm,or solar,then an electric car truly would be clean.But for political,technical,and economic reasons,we don't use much of those energy sources.
In addition,electric cars'batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill.And finally,when cars are the polluters,the pollution is spread across all the roads.When it's a power plant,though,all the junk is in one place.Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated,but it takes much longer when all the garbage is in one spot.

33.What does the underlined word"clueless"mean in Paragraph 2?D
A.People are seeing the California Greens everywhere.
B.People in California love to talk about zero-emissions vehicles.
C.People in California love to have their roofs covered with solar cells.
D.People there have no idea that so far electricity mainly comes from burning coal,oil,etc.
34.What is the main idea of the passage?A
A.Electric cars are not clean at all.
B.Electric cars are better than gasoline-powered ones.
C.People cast doubts on electric cars'batteries.
D.Gasoline is an efficient way to power a vehicle.
35.The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car runD.
A.not less than 25 miles
B.more than 25 miles
C.no more than 25 miles
D.not more than 25 miles.

6.America is a mobile society.Friendships between Americans can be close and real,yet disappear soon if situations change.Neither side feels hurt by this.If the same two people meet again by chance,even years later,they pick up the friendship.This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand,because friendships between us develop more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings,extending(延伸)sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes,share their holidays,and their home life.They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality(好客)easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they treat us warmly,they don't show their politeness to us if it requires much time.But in China,we are usually generous with our time.Sometimes,we,as hosts,will appear at an airport even in the middle of the night to meet a friend.The Americans,however,express their welcome usually at homes,but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily plans.They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus.And they expect that we will phone them from there.Once we arrive at their homes,the welcome will be full,warm and real.We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans,it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for pure business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!
