“How are things back at the office?” one of the gentlemen in my bicycle tour group asked me as we were nearing the end of another lengthy ride through Croatia’s scenic countryside.

“I assume they are going fine,” I said. “I haven’t had any contact and I don’t plan to.”

“Your phone isn’t on?” he asked, incredulously. “You haven’t checked your email?”

“My phone is off and no, I’m not planning on checking email,” I said.

My wife Heidi and I took my children, Daniel and Rachel, on a two-week trip to Croatia, one of the most beautiful countries in the world. We made the choice to spend some of our money on this wonderful experience so we could spend time bonding with each other and the kids.

Why would I destroy the environment we had traveled thousands of miles to create by bringing my work environment into it? That would be counter-productive to everything I wanted out of this trip. If I worked during this experience, I would be taking time away from my family and sending them the message that work takes priority over them.

In addition to sharing this incredible experience, I wanted to take us all out of the activity-driven world we live in. If I had my cell phone on and was constantly searching out a wireless connection to keep up with office, I would just bring that hyper-connected environment into the peaceful, meaningful world I was trying to create.

In addition to creating life-long memories with my family, another wonderful thing happened as a result of this bike trip. As we were returning home, I was flooded with new ideas. I came up with concepts for nine blog posts and several ideas that I want to incorporate into my business.

Taking time off restored and rejuvenated me and allowed my creative spirit to really come to the surface. How can you accomplish that goal if you simply move the source of that stress to a different location?

COME AND EAT HERE

Wang Peng sat in his empty restaurant feeling very frustrated. It had been a very strange morning. Usually he got up early and prepared his menu of barbecued mutton kebabs, roast pork, stir-flied vegetables and fried rice. Then by lunchtime they would all be sold. By now his restaurant ought to be full of people. But not today! Why was that? What could have happened? He thought of his mutton, beef and bacon cooked in the hottest, finest oil. His cola was sugary and cold, and his ice cream was made of milk, cream and delicious fruit. "Nothing could be better," he thought. Suddenly he saw his friend Li Chang hurrying by. "Hello, Lao Li," he called. "Your usual?" But Li Chang seemed not to hear. What was the matter? Something terrible must have happened if Li Chang was not coming to eat in his restaurant as he always did.

Wang Peng followed Li Chang into a new small restaurant. He saw a sign in the window.

Tired of all that fat? Want to lose weight?
Come inside Yong Hui’s slimming restaurant.
Only slimming foods served here.
Make yourself thin again!

Curiosity drove Wang Peng inside. It was full of people. The hostess, a very thin lady, came forward. "Welcome," she said. "My name is Yong Hui. I'll help you lose weight and be fit in two weeks if you eat here every day." Then she gave a menu to Wang Peng. There were few choices of food and drink on it: just rice, raw vegetables served in vinegar, fruit and water. Wang Peng was amazed at this and especially at the prices. It cost more than a good meal in his restaurant! He could not believe his eyes. He threw down the menu and hurried outside. On his way home he thought about his own menu. Did it make people fat? Perhaps he should go to the library and find out. He could not have Yong Hui getting away with telling people lies! He had better do some research!

At the library Wang Peng was surprised to find that his restaurant served far too much fat and Yong Hui’s far too little. Even though her customers might get thin after eating Yong Hui’s food, they were not eating enough energy-giving food to keep them fit. They would become tired very quickly. Wang Peng felt more hopeful as he drove back home. Perhaps with a discount and a new sign he could win his customers back. So he wrote:

Want to feel fit and energetic?

Come and eat here! Discounts today!

Our food gives you energy all day!

Going green seems to be fad (时尚) for a lot of people these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can't really say, but for the two of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle.

On April 22, 2011, we decided to go green every single day for an entire year. This meant doing 365 different green things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green beyond easy things. Rather than recycle and reduce our energy, we had to think of 365 different green things to do and this was no easy task.

With the idea of going green every single day for a year, Our Green Year started. My wife and I decided to educate people about how they could go green in their lives and hoped we could show people all the green things that could be done to help the environment. We wanted to push the message that every little bit helps.

Over the course of Our Green Year, we completely changed our lifestyle. We now shop at organic(有机的)stores. We consume less meat, choosing green food. We have greatly reduced our buying we don't need. We have given away half of what we owned through websites. Our home is kept clean by vinegar and lemon juice, with no chemical cleaners. We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of home-made fresh bread. In our home office anyone caught doing something ungreen might be punished.

Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year. We are grateful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things and help our planet.

Some creative people see colors when they hear different sounds. Others hear voices when they see words and numbers. What they experience is called synaesthesia(通感)。

A study at the University of Sussex in the UK is finding out how to use synacsthesia to improve your IQ and memory. The study leaders Danil Bor has been working on exploring memory for a number of year. Bor says that carrying out these tests has given them the opportunity to find out more about how we use different kinds of memory.

Bor based his latest research on something scientists already know a lot about “chunks”. He explains that this is a way of parceling out large pieces of information into smaller units (chunks), with certain features or meanings, to make it easier to remember.” When I gave you my phone number, 01274737271, you probably remember it as 012-74-73-72-71, or something similar. If you can remember 012 and then 74, you can remember the rest by its features. You can get some amazing benefits from chunks.”

In this way, synacesthesia adds extra meaningful information to things that are different to remember, such as letters, numbers, or colors. This helps us remember things betters.” All these signs are pointing towards synaesthesia being connected to greater abilities to do certain things, certain jobs.” says Bor. “So, the study began as a way to test that.”

They wanted to see if they could create a way to learn about synaesthesia, and use its benefits to help everyone. In the study, they trained volunteers for 10 minutes a day for a week. The results were not huge, but impressive.

They discovered that after training, the volunteers were able to pass the normal synaesthesia tests and their IQ jumped up about 12 points. Although Bor believes they still need to test the increase in IQ with different groups of people, the result is very impressive. “It’s very useful to increases people’s IQs. Even when the group are already quite clever, like the students who take part in this study.” he said.

Some people say that city living in the 21 st century is stressful and offers no advantages, but I don’t agree with them completely.

With the development of high-tech and the improvement of living qualities, more and more people crowded into city, which leads to the uncontrollable urbanization (城市化). Because of this, some of the largest cities must be fairly oppressive(压抑的) places in which to live if you are short of money or unemployed. However, for those with much income, a city provides colorful environment which enables people to enjoy their modern life. In that case, I believe the advantages of urban living far outweigh from its shortcomings.

Regarding shopping, as for me, rather than click on the Internet to get what I want, I prefer to windowshop. All kinds of shopping malls and supermarkets located in city centre really content me. What’s more, a large city’s service even covers numbers of the surrounding towns and benefits many people.

In terms of entertainment, city residents are usually spoiled for choice, from amusement park to sport stadium, whoever you are will find exactly what you need. Maybe going to a concert tonight and visiting museums tomorrow. City always contains various activities and full of energy.

City also provides better opportunities with so many choices and challenges. Cities with universities offer high-standard education so that graduates from these places always get ideal jobs with considerable salary. Every day in the business district, you can see a fierce competition among those large companies, while there are exactly places that may give birth to talents.

Many people may complain about the traffic jam or pollution in the city, but I think with some useful measures to take, our city will be more habitable rather than stressful.

1.What does the author intend to tell us in the passage?

A. City living in the 21 st century is stressful.

B. City provides more conveniences and pleasures.

C. City living brings great trouble to the youth..

D. City is gradually dying out as a matter of fact.

2.The advantages of urban living are________.

A. much income and colorful environment

B. quantities of population and shopping centers

C. great entertainments and better education

D. strong measures and fresh air

3.City residents are usually spoiled for choice because they______.

A. have no more choices for amusement

B. can hardly find what they like to do

C. are so many kinds of entertainment

D. will spend more money in a way

4.What’s the attitude of the author to the disadvantages in city?

A. Disappointed B. Hopeful

C. Amazed D. Cold-hearted
