Smith drove his pickup(小货车)a couple of miles along the 26 road to get to the other side of the lake. This road, in the truest sense, was a path wagging in the heavy 27 area. Even with the sun still high in the cloudless sky, the 28 of trees formed a leafy 29 over the road and it suddenly seemed 30 in the evening.
“A guy could get lost and nobody would ever find him,” said Chambers.
Smith smiled, “We’re 31 there.” He said. A few seconds later, the smile was 32 from his face.
“What the hell is that?”
He braked to a stop. Less than twenty feet away was what appeared to be a  33 .
For several minutes the two men sat in the pickup 34 to decide whether they had happened to 35 someone’s bad practical joke or something far more serious. Smith with his brother-in-law got out of the pickup and 36 walked towards that thing some distance before them.
It was a young man who was already dead. They had got to tell 37 . Back into the pickup, Smith backed the pickup down the road 38 he could turn around, then 39 back. “ Are you too stupid to do anything right?”These words—said by a woman to a little boy who was obviously her son—were spoken   21   he had walked away from her. They boy returned, his eyes down-cast.
Not a   22    moment, perhaps,   23    small moments sometimes last a very long time. And a few words—though they mean   24   at the time to the people who say them—can have great   25   .
I recently heard a story from a man named Malcolm Dalkoff. For the last 24 years he has been a professional   26   .Here is what he told me:
As a boy in Rock Island, Dalkoff was terribly   27   .He had few   28   and no self-confidence.One day, his English teacher, Ruth Brach, gave the class an assignment(作业).The students had been reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Now they were to write their own chapter that would   29    the last chapter of the novel.
Dalkoff wrote his chapter and turned it   30  .Today he can not recall anything   31
about the chapter he wrote, or what   32   Mrs.Branch gave him. What he does remember is the four words Mrs.Brach wrote in margin(空白处)of the paper:“This is   33  writing.”
Four words.They   34    his life.
35    I read those words, I had no idea of who I was or   36  I was going to be.”he said.“After reading her note, I went home and wrote a short story, something I had always been   37   of doing but never believed I could do.”
Over the rest of that year in school, he wrote many short stories and always brought them to school for Mrs.Brach to evaluate. She was   38    , tough and honest.“She was just what I
  39  .”Dalkoff said.
His confidence   40  .Dalkoff believes that none of this would have happened if that woman had not written those four words in the margin of his paper.

When I was born, my parents immediately noticed something wrong. My feet were deformed (畸形的), pointing inward and curling under. I wore casts (石膏) and foot braces (支架) in my first two years to correct the problem. Yet I learned to balance and walk in casts. Soon after the last set of casts came off,Mom enrolled me in dance classes as therapy for my feet. I, however, quickly decided to try something else. Not far from my house was an ice rink (溜冰场) in the mall. There, local skaters would perform ice shows. I wanted to try skating.
I started taking group skating lessons. Performing on ice came naturally. For me,skating has never been about beating others. It’s been about being my personal best. I progressed through various levels rapidly and gave my first ice performance at age seven. Soon I started winning local and regional competitions. That’s because being on the ice has always been the one place I can truly express my emotions. The ice is like home.
I began seriously training when I was nine years old. After graduating from girls’ high school,I moved to Canada. Saying goodbye to my family and friends made me homesick, but I knew deep down that I had to leave and train full-time to give my dreams a chance at reality.
I went to compete in the Olympic Games in 1992.I was the first of the final six skaters on the ice. My long performance started well, but I slipped while landing one of my easiest triple jumps, and my hand touched the ice. I didn’t want to make two mistakes in a row,so next I did a jump with just two spins to play it safe. As I neared the end,I had one more jump. I landed it perfectly.
When medals were awarded,I found myself on the top step, the gold hanging around my neck and America’s national anthem playing. Words can’t describe the overwhelming mixture of emotions I felt.
