Contrary to popular belief, looking at someone's face alone is not enough to tell us whether they are roaring in celebration or screaming in frustration, researchers claimed. While people may believe they have the ability to read each other's faces, body language is the real clue that shows whether strong emotions someone is feeling are positive or negative.

In a study, groups of participants were shown a series of facial expressions such as tennis players photographed just after winning or losing a point.

In some cases the volunteers were able to see the player's full body, but in others they were only shown either their face or their body with the other removed.

Participants could clearly tell whether the players were winning or losing when they were shown the full picture or just the body, but their guesses were no better than chance when based on the face alone.

Those who were allowed to see the full image were convinced they had made their judgment based on the players' facial expressions even though results from the two other groups suggested otherwise.

The researchers carried out a second study where participants were shown a wider range of faces showing emotions including joy, pleasure, victory, pain and defeat.

Using photoediting software, the researchers attached the faces to bodies expressing the opposite emotion, and asked participants to act out the emotions they saw in the photos.

The resulting poses were like the body poses in the photographs but not the facial expressions, demonstrating that people base their interpretation of strong emotions not on the face but the body.

Dr Aviezer, who led the study, said, “These results show that when emotions become extremely intense, the difference between positive and negative facial expressions becomes unclear. The results may help researchers understand how our body interacts during emotional situations. For example, individuals may fail to recognize facial expressions, but if they are trained to process important body language, their performance may significantly improve.”

B.All participants were given the same pictures to see.

C.It proved that emotions influence people's body language.

D.Participants could tell the players' feelings when seeing the full picture.

【3】What did Dr Aviezer think of the results of the study?

A.Ridiculous. B.Useless.

C.Unrealistic. D.Helpful.

【4】Which of the following can summarize the main idea of the passage?

Parents are creating an “I want it now” generation by indulging children’s every demand at Christmas, say experts.Youngsters are becoming increasingly selfish, claim the education analysts.

Consumersavvy children are forcing their families into racking up huge debts and risk becoming spoilt and dissatisfied in the future.

Behavioural consultant Chris Calland said,“Parents are desperate to make Christmas into a magical fairy tale for their kids. There’s nothing wrong with that as such. The problem arises when it means always giving into all our children’s demands—even if they are beyond our price range or not ageappropriate.”

Ms Calland, who runs “Santa Says No” style sessions with colleague Nicky Hutchinson, added,“Many of us go into so much debt providing the gifts our children want that we spend the rest of the year paying off the bills.Yet so often the parcels we’ve carefully wrapped, once opened, are just pushed away because the very thing our little boy or girl was once so desperate for, they have now lost interest in.”

Ms Calland and Ms Hutchinson have drawn up a list of guidelines to help parents manage their offspring’s Christmas lists this year. They say that adults can actually improve their relationships with their children by resisting “pester (纠缠) power”.

Ms Calland said,“All too often we say yes because we want an easier life when the fact is that we’re only building up problems for the future. We are helping create a generation of youngsters who are blind to the needs of others and the necessity of hard work.”

“Children learn fast—if we sometimes change our mind, they quickly realise it might be worth lying on the floor and screaming for it.Make sure you and your partner are working together on this.Be consistent. And try not to get caught up in competition with other families or friends.”

【1】What is the main problem with the “I want it now” generation?

A.They are quite selfcentered.

B.They like to live in fairy tales.

C.They waste a lot of money on gifts.

D.They can’t keep their interest in gifts.

【2】What is probably the aim of “Santa Says No” style sessions?

A.To advise on how to wrap gifts properly.

B.To keep children’s interest in the gifts.

C.To tell parents how to say no to children’s demands.

D.To advise parents on what gifts to buy for children.

【3】According to the passage,we can infer that Ms Calland intends to ________.

A.analyze children’s behavior

B.give advice to parents

C.introduce a new generation

D.give her support to parents

【4】Ms Calland would agree that parents should________.

A.buy nothing for children at Christmas

B.choose gifts carefully for children

D.avoid competing with others

For my grandmother’s 70th birthday,my family and I visited South Korea. While there,I was attentive to Korean high schools and students.

I was surprised by how different Korea’s public high schools are from America’s.Korean high schools can be allgirls, allboys or coed (男女同校的) unlike our standard coed high schools. There are three grades:“go 1(10th)”,“go 2(11th)” and “go 3(12th)”.“Go” is the first syllable of the word “godeunghakkyo”,which, simply translated,is “high school”.

In America, unless you want to go to a private school, you don’t have to take an entrance exam.In Korea, however, students must take a test to get in because of the many choices of schools.

Another difference I couldn’t help but notice was the students’ appearance. With very few exceptions, all wear uniforms. A name tag (标牌) with the student’s name, grade and homeroom number must also be worn.Girl’s skirts can’t be above the upper part of the knee, and it is forbidden to dye(染) your hair or wear accessories (装饰品) except small earrings. There are strict regulations for appearance to achieve neatness, and it seems the only freedom students have is with their choices of hair style, socks and shoes.

The final difference was the setup of the classes. There may be 40 students in a classroom, but the number can be less or even more, depending on the population of the town or city.Although there are many students per classroom, they are very close, which I think is a result of not changing classrooms for different subjects. There are no levels in the subjects and the teachers are the ones who switch classrooms. They just have tenminute breaks between subjects. In each class, students are ranked by their grades. This causes strict competition, and Korean students do a lot of studying. To help them, all schools have extra study classes after school. One other fact that helped me appreciate living in America is that Koreans have school on Saturdays.Although it’s only a half day,I think I speak for most Americans when I say we could never imagine ourselves in school on a Saturday.

Korea’s public high schools are clearly different from America’s.I had imagined them to be just like our schools, but now I have a clear picture of how different they are.

【1】How many main differences are mentioned between Korea’s public high school and America’s?

A.3. B.4.

C.5. D.6.

【2】It seems that the writer ________.

A.is familiar with the education system of high schools in Korea

B.is fond of Korean students’ appearance

C.prefers the high school life of America to the one of Korea

D.feels it common to have lessons on weekends

【3】What does the underlined word “setup” in paragraph 5 probably mean?

A.Arrangement. B.Size.

C.Number. D.Outline.

【4】According to the rules, the students of Korea can ________.

A.go to different high schools without exams

B.wear any clothes except uniforms at school

C.attend different classes as they like

D.have different hair styles

Americas No.1 Health Problem. So reads the headline of an article published by the American Institute of Stress that claims the biggest threat to health today is neither cancer nor AIDS. The report says: “It has been estimated(估计)that 75 to 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems.”

It is no exaggeration(夸张)to say that people today are being attacked by stress. According to the National Consumers League, “Work is the top source of stress for adults who have problems and stress in their lives (39%), followed by family (30%). Other sources include health (10%), concern about the economy (9%) and concern about international conflict and terrorism (4%).”

However, stress is hardly unique to the United States. A British survey in 2005 estimated that “over half a million individuals in Britain believed in 2004 that they were experiencing work-related stress at a level that was making them ill.” As a result of “work-related stress, depression or anxiety,” there are “an estimated thirteen and a half million reported lost working days per year in Britain.”

The picture is no less bleak in mainland Europe. According to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, work-related stress has been shown to affect millions of European workers across all types of employment sectors. One survey revealed that there are “about 41 million workers affected by work-related stress each year.”

What about Asia? A report issued by a conference held in Tokyo concluded: “Job stress is a common concern among many countries in the world, both developing and industrialized countries.” The report observed that “several countries in East Asia, including China and Korea, have rapidly industrialized and economically grown. These countries now have a lot of concerns on job stress and its harmful effects on workers’ health.”

【题目】Leonardo da Vinci’s mother may have been a Chinese slave according to a new research by an Italian historian and novelist—Angelo Paratico, who has spent the last 20 years living and working in Hong Kong, researching the links between his homeland and China over the past half century.

Mr Paratico said the documents he has uncovered during two years of research form the basis of his latest book Leonardo Da Vinci, a Chinese scholar lost in Renaissance(文艺复兴)Italy. The book, which is due to be published next year, uncovers evidence that there’s a link between Da Vinci and the Far East.

Speaking to the South China Morning Post, Mr Paratico said, “I am sure that Leonardo’s mother was from the East, but to make her a Chinese, we need to use a deductive method(演绎法). One wealthy client of Leonardo’s father had a slave called Caterina. After Leonardo’s date of birth, she disappeared from the documents. She was no longer working there.’’

It is believed that his mother was called Caterina, who, according to some reports, was a local peasant. But Mr Paratico’s new work claims it is most likely that Da Vinci’s mother was a slave. Supporting his theory, he said, “During the Renaissance, countries like Italy and Spain were full of slaves from the East.”

He claimed that there were certain aspects of Da Vinci’s life and works which suggest a Chinese link. For instance, he was writing with his left hand from left to right and he was also a vegetarian, which was not common. Mona Lisa is probably a portrait of his mother,as Sigmund Freud said in 1910. On the back of Mona Lisa, there is a Chinese landscape and even her face looks Chinese.

Mr Paratico said he believes the only way to solve the mystery is to dig out some of Da Vinci’s relations in Florence and extract some DNA.

1What is Mr Paratico’s latest book based on?

A. His research findings. B. His living experience.

C. His final visit to Italy. D. His interest in Renaissance.

2What may suggest there is a link between Da Vinci and Chinese?

A. His working habit. B. His ways of writing.

C. His birth date. D. His father’s friend.

3What can we learn about Da Vinci’s mother?

A. She was a slave of Leonardo’s father.

B. She quit working after her marriage.

C. She was buried in Florence after death.

D. She was probably the model of Mona Lisa.
