题目内容
4.I knew the food was going to be spicy (辣的) as soon as I stepped into the restaurant.I was in Chengdu with two of my Chinese friends. At a long table near the door, some sweaty young men were peeling off (脱掉) their shirts while they picked vegetables out of hot-pot broth (火锅汤).I stayed away from whatever they were eating that day.But that doesn't mean I always refuse to eat spicy food.I like it-just in small doses (量).
When I eat spicy food,I feel like my whole body is on fire.My tongue burns. My body sweats. Some foreigners I know love the feeling. To them, eating spicy food is a challenge-like running a race or climbing a mountain.Eating the food-and living to tell about it-is a thing to be celebrated.
Me?I would rather run a race or climb a mountain.
When I eat,I don't want to be uncomfortable.I don't want to sweat. And I certainly don't want to peel my shirt off.(I don't think you would want me to either,as you would see my ugly, white belly (肚子).
Some of my foreign friends have made fun of me for my cowardice (胆小).They have called me names (jokingly) for not trying China's spiciest fare (饭菜).
But I've learned to take it all in stride (从容地).After all,I know what often happens to these foreigners after they get home:Eating the fiery (非常辣的) dishes might be fun.But I'm told it's certainly no fun when the food finally comes to the other end.
