What are American high schools like? Well,I'm happy to tell you what I know.

When I started school here,it had already been a week since the schoo1 opened. At this school, freshmen usually go on a trip for about three days at the beginning of school. Unfortunately I missed that wonderful trip.which would have been the best time to get to know my classmates.I was really sad.I wished I’d known about it earlier.

Despite the disappointment, however,I gradually adapted to my new life and schoo1.

There is a space in the basement of the teaching building where students chat and meet each other. As we do not always have the same classrooms and classmates, the school wants us to get to know each other there.Students usually come to school early, sit in that space and have fun.Around the space, there are many lockers for students to leave their books in,so that students do not have to carry a heavy schoolbag everywhere.

It really surprises me that we have almost no textbooks. We only have textbooks for World History and Algebra and they are big and heavy, like bricks. For other classes,we only need binders(活页夹)with paper in them.Without textbooks, students learn things freely and actively. For example,my humanities teacher just teaches us what is in her mind at the time.We never know what we will learn.

Another difference between American schools and Chinese schools is that American schools care about students’ morality more than their academic studies. For example,if you do not finish your homework, you will just be asked to do it later, but if you cheat or lie,you will get a warning or even be kicked out.

I think that most students here are good at schoolwork as well, but compared to Chinese students, they can make learning a more joyful experience.I think we should take the good points from our two different kinds of education to perfect our approach to studying.

I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job.I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career(职业).

I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer.I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career.

I then found myself a job.Looking after two little girls,It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in,so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next. But unfortunately,it didn’t often work out.I was getting extremely tired and fed up,because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.

One Sunday,I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me,I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification(资格证书)if I wanted to work with children.I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part – time course.I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

Now I’ve got a full – time job there.I shall always be thankful to Megan.I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren’t top of the class at school.

In April 2014, the world’s oldest known message in a bottle was discovered floating in the Baltic Sea. It had spent 101years lost in the ocean! The message was finally sent to the author’s granddaughter.

A German fisherman named Konrad Fischer found the brown bottle near Kiel, Germany. He said he nearly threw the bottle back into the water after pulling it out of a fishing net. Then he noticed something inside.

The bottle in good condition contained a Danish postcard with two German stamps, dated May 17, 1913. Although dampness had made most of the writing illegible(字迹模糊的), the readable part of the message asked whoever found it to return it to an address in Berlin. It even contained two stamps to pay for postage.

From the address, researchers found that the postcard was written by a man named Richard Platz, who was 20 years old when he wrote the message. While he was hiking on the Baltic coast with a nature appreciation group, he threw the bottle into the sea. Then the researcher began a research for any living relatives of his. Sure enough, they were able to find his 62-year-old grandfather, Angela Erdmann, who still lives in Berlin.

"It was almost unbelievable," Erdmann said upon being presented with her grandfather's bottle and message, as quoted in The Local. "That was a pretty moving moment. Tears rolled down my face."

Erdmann never knew her grandfather, who died in 1946, but says that the discovery of the bottle has made her want to learn more about him.

The bottle remained on display at the International Maritime Museum Hamburg until May 1. After that, the researchers examined the postcard and tried to figure out the meaning of the rest of the message.

Across Britain, burnt toast will be served to mothers in bed this morning as older sons and daughters rush to deliver their supermarket bunches of flowers. But, according to a new study, we should be placing a higher value on motherhood all year.

Mothers have long known that their home workload was just as heavy as paid work. Now, the new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labors, they would earn as much as£172,000 a year.

The study looked at the range of jobs mothers do, as well as the hours they are working, to determine the figure. This would make their yearly income £30,000 more than the Prime Minister earns.

By analyzing the numbers, it found the average mother works 119 hours a week, 40 of which would usually be paid at a standard rate and 79 hours as overtime. After questioning 1,000 mothers with children under 18, it found that, on most days, mums started their routine work at 7 am and finished at around 11 pm.

To calculate just how much mothers would earn from that labor, it suggested some of the roles that mums could take on, including housekeeper, part-time lawyer, personal trainer and entertainer. Being a part-time lawyer, at £48.98 an hour, would prove to be the most profitable of the “mum jibs”, with psychologist(心理学家) a close second.

It also asked mothers about the challenges they face, with 80 percent making emotional(情感的) demand as the hardest thing about motherhood.

Over a third of mums felt they needed more training and around half said they missed going out with friends.

The study shows mothers matter all year long and not just on Mother’s Day. The emotional, physical and mental energy mothers devote to their children can be never-ending, but children are also sources of great joy and happiness. Investing(投入) in time for parenting and raising relationships is money well spent.

1.How much would a mother earn a year if working as the Prime Minister?

A.£30,000. B.£142,000.

C.£172,000. D.£202,000.

2.The biggest challenge for most mothers is from .

A. emotional demand B. low pay for work

C. heavy workload D. lack of training

3.What is stressed in the last paragraph?

A. Mothers’ importance shows in family all year long.

B. The sacrifices mothers make are huge but worthwhile.

C. Mothers’ devotion to children can hardly be calculated.

D. Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return.

4.What can we conclude from the study?

A. Mothers’ working hours should be largely reduced.

B. Mothers should balance their time for work and rest.

C. Mothers’ labor is of a higher value than it is realized.

D. Mothers should be freed from housework for social life.
