Tom and Alice were both patient in a Mental Hospital. One day they were walking by the swimming pool of the hospital while Tom suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom. Alice promptly jumped in to save him with any hesitation. She swam to the bottom and pull him out. When the medical director became aware Alice¡¯s heroic act, he immediate reviewed her file and called her into his office. ¡°Alice, I have a good news and bad news for you. The good news is that you¡¯re being discharged because since you were able to save the life of other patient, I think you¡¯ve gained your senses. The bad news is that Tom, that you saved, hanged himself with his bathrobe£¨Ô¡Ò£©belt in the bathroom, and he was dead.¡±

Alice replied, ¡°He didn¡¯t hang him. I hung him up to dry.¡±

Russia¡¯s security chief has blamed an act of terror for the Russian A321 airliner crash in Egypt last month which killed 224 people. Whatever happened, the tragedy raises sad memories of horrific airplane crashes that have cost thousands of lives in recent decades .

Some of the worst such incidents¡ªlike four crashes in frightening succession into New York¡¯s World Trade Center, the Pentagon and rural Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001; the 1988 downing of Pan Am Flight 103 in Lockerbie, Scotland; and a 1977 crash involving the apparent hijacking of a Malaysian Airlines jet that left 100 dead¡ªinvolved terrorist activity. But there are many others that did not, with mechanical problems, pilot error or other reasons blamed for loss of life. Below are some examples of the latter: crashes that left at least 200 people dead in each incident.

March 27 , 1977 : A KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Boeing 747 beginning its takeoff crashed into Pan American World Airways Boeing 747 then still on the runway at the Los Rodeos Airport at Tenerife in the Canary Islands. A total of 574 people, aboard both planes, died .

July 11 , 1991 : The landing gear of a Nigeria Airways DC-8 catches fire shortly after takeoff Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It doesn¡¯t make it back to the airport, crashing nose-down less than 10,000 feet short of the runway and killing all 261 people aboard.

April 26 , 1994 : The pilot of a China Airlines¡¯ Flight 140 alerts the control tower at Japan¡¯s Nagoya Airport of his intention not to land and try another approach. But something goes wrong and, a short time later, the Airbus A300 crashes leading to 264 deaths¡ªthough a few passengers do survive.

September 2 , 1998 : A Swiss air jetliner that had departed New York¡¯s Kennedy airport on its way to Geneva, Switzerland, goes down off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada; none of the 229 people aboard Flight 111 make it. Investigators believe that the MD-11 lost all electrical power immediately before the crash.

June 1 , 2009 : Air France Flight 447 is on the way from Rio de Janiero to Paris when it and its 228 passengers and crew go missing somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean. It¡¯s not until five days later that the first bodies are found about 600 miles off the northern coast of Brazil. Two years later, French authorities blame the crash on equipment breakdown.

2.Which air crash resulted from terrorist attack ?

A. China Airlines¡¯ Flight 140

B. Pan Am Flight 103

A. Two planes of the same type hit each other on March 27 , 1977.

B. There were over 264 people aboard China Airlines¡¯ Flight 140.

I always experienced guilt when I passed by without giving a coin or two to a beggar.

My conscience was pricked again on a tour of Venice in 2010. I had taken refuge from the crowds in a quiet canal-side caf¨¦. Outside the caf¨¦ was an old woman kneeling on the ancient cobbled stones, begging. Steady streams of tourists were walking past her. A lone young back-packer stood away from the crowds drinking something, but I noticed he was also observing the woman.

A tourist group glanced at the woman and walked on. Another group of tourists arrived and, again, walked past her. The backpacker watched. Then, as I prepared to leave, I stopped at the sight of the backpacker stepping forward and placing some money in the woman¡¯s cup. He did this rather ostentatiously£¨ìÅÒ«µØ£©, just before the arrival of another tourist group. I watched as the leader of the group stopped and put some money in the cup. Having been shown the way, other tourists followed suit and added more coins to the woman¡¯s cup.

The young backpacker repeated this process in front of the next tour party going past. Once again, the subtle peer £¨Í¬°é£©pressure worked on the tourists, who all added coins to the cup. His work done, the young man walked over to the old beggar woman, patted her shoulder and said, ¡°I hope that helps a bit.¡±

I don¡¯t know if the woman understood his English or realized what had just happened, but I did. I placed some money in the woman¡¯s cup and continued my travels, light-hearted after witnessing such an act of caring.

A. he wanted to stop the tourists by doing this

C. he wanted to help the woman by himself

D. he wanted the tourist group to follow him

2.The author went to a quiet canal-side cafe to_______ .

A. avoid meeting the beggar

B. get away from the crowds

C. take a rest

D. watch the woman beggar

3.We can infer from the passage that ________ .

A. tourists can be cheated by beggars

B. people usually have pity on an old beggar

C. tourists are willing to help beggars

D. people can do kind acts due to peer pressure

4.Before the backpacker dropped some money in the woman¡¯s cup, the tourists ______ .

A. all showed pity for the woman

B. didn¡¯t notice the woman

C. walked by without giving any money

D. gave a little money to the woman

How I Turned to Be Optimistic

I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see-¡ªthe strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.

The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost¡ªhaving to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to "the hard times."

My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.

From my experiences I have learned one important rule: almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.
