14.To raise money for his new idea,he toured the city's private companies,____ would fund new businesses,and he was able to find a supporter.( )
A.what he hopedB.he hopedC.he hoped thatD.which he hoped

5.How long has 3-D technology been around?Most of us might think of crowds of teenagers in a 1950's movie house watching Bwana Devil in 3-D.But 3-D technology made its first appearance on the scene in 1838with the first stereoscope(体视镜).And the first actual 3-D movie was a 1903 film called Le Ariveed'un Train.
Although it has such a long history,the technology has still remained based on one simple principle-----to make 3-D effects you must find a way to project two slightly different pictures to each eye.Modern 3-D technology works by rapidly flickering(闪动) two versions of the movie and projecting them onto each eye.The brain does the rest of the work,combining the two pictures together into one and giving the show the appearance of depth,the third dimension.
But does this exposure,especially long exposures,cause harm to the child's developing brain and visual system?Unfortunately,long-term studies on new flicker digital 3-D technology and children aren't yet available.We do not know if regular or daily 3-D viewing over years affects the developing visual system,although older 3-D methods basically do the same thing and are not considered harmful.
The question of possible harm in modern 3-D use in TV is really based on two facts:the amount of time children will now be watching 3-D TV each day and the sensitivity some children show in reaction to 3-D viewing.It is difficult to make actual lab studies of longer term 3-D viewing in children because of the possible harm of the experiment.Researchers will have to wait until 3-D TV technology is already in the marketplace for a number of years,then check heavy 3-D TV watchers and compare them with non-watchers.
With a 3-D television technology in the home,we will soon be able to answer the question of whether or not longer and more frequent periods of 3-D exposure cause more changes in the visual system.We may find that the bigger problem is the introduction of a new technology that leads to even more time spent on TV rather than playing outdoors.

19.I still remember my first day at school in London and I was half-excited and half-frightened.On my way to school I wondered what sort of questions the other boys would ask me and practiced all the answers:"I am nine years old.I was born here but I haven't lived here since I was two.I was living in Farley.It's about thirty miles away.I came back to London two months ago."I also wondered if it was the custom for boys to fight strangers like me,but I was tall for my age.I hoped they would decide not to risk it.
No one took any notice of me before school.I stood in the center of the playground,expecting someone to say"hello",but no one spoke to me.When a teacher called my name and told me where my classroom was,one or two boys looked at me but that was all.
My teacher was called Mr.Jones.There were 42 boys in the class,so I didn't stand out there,either,until the first lesson of the afternoon.Mr.Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens and he had decided to read aloud to us from David Copperfield,but first he asked several boys if they knew Dickens'birthplace,but no one guessed right.A boy called Brian,the biggest in the class,said:"Timbuktu",and Mr.Jones went red in the face.Then he asked me.I said:"Portsmouth",and everyone stared at me because Mr.Jones said I was right.This didn't make me very popular,of course.
"He thinks he's clever,"I heard Brian say.
After that,we went out to the playground to play football.I was in Brian's team,and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal.No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper.
"He's big enough and useless enough."Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me.
I suppose Mr.Jones,who served as the judge,remembered Dickens,too,because when the game was nearly over,Brian pushed one of the players on the other team,and he gave them a penalty (惩罚).As the boy kicked the ball to my right,I threw myself down instinctively (本能地) and saved it.All my team crowded round me.My bare knees were injured and bleeding.Brian took out a handkerchief and offered it to me.
"Do you want to join my gang (帮派)?"he said.
At the end of the day,I was no longer a stranger.

At first you may not understand the importance of a good training period, but after you have completed your first climb and you are standing safely at the top of a rock feeling thrilled, then you will know it was the right thing to do.

8.Want to stay away from colds?Put on a hap py face.
Compared to unhappy people, those who are cheerful and rel axed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. It's possible that being happy helps the body fight illnesses, say the researchers from New York University.
"It seems that positive feelings may reduce the danger of illness,"said the study's chief researcher Sheldon Cohen. In an earlier study,Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often.People who showed feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill.
In this study,Cohen's interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks.During the interviews, the people told researchers about the happy or sad feelings they had that day. After the two weeks, the people were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days.
The result showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get ill.But for people who said th ey felt happy during the research period, their illness was less serious and lasted for a shorter time.
Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may produce a chemical that helps fight illness and disease. So if you are worried abut your health, look on the bright side more often.
