B [2014 •四川卷]

In 1943, when I was 4, my parents moved from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to Fairbanks, Alaska, where adventure was never very far away.

We arrived in the summer, just in time to enjoy the midnight sun. All that sunlight was fantastic for Mum's vegetable garden. Working in the garden at midnight tended to throw her timing off, so she didn't care much about my bedtime.

Dad was a Railway Express agent and Mum was his clerk. That left me in a mess. I usually managed to find some trouble to get into. Once I had a little fire go?ing in the dirt basement of a hotel. I had tried to light a barrel (桶)of paint but couldn't really get a good fire going. The smoke got pretty bad, though, and when I made my exit, a crowd and the police were there to greet me. The policemen took my matches and drove me home.

Mum and Dad were occupied in the garden and Dad told the police to keep me, and they did ! I had a tour of the prison before Mum rescued me. I hadn't turned 5 yet.

As I entered kindergarten, the serious cold began to set in. Would it surprise you to know that I soon left part of my tongue on a metal handrail at school?

As for Leonhard Seppala, famous as a dog sledder(驾雪橇者),I think I knew him well because I was taken for a ride with his white dog team one Sunday. At the time I didn't realize what a superstar he was, but I do remember the ride well. I was wrapped(包裹〉heavily and well sheltered from the freezing and blowing weather.

In 1950, we moved back to Coeur d'Alene, but we got one more Alaskan ad?venture when Leonhard invited us eight years later by paying a visit to Idaho to at?tend a gathering of former neighbours of Alaska.

Sooner or later, most students are to take some form of English exami?nations. Often the more successful students are better prepared. However, sometimes students who do well have better test-taking skills. These abili?ties really have nothing'to do with understanding English better. They are skills that make taking the test easier, and therefore provide better results.

Here are some very important—and often ignored―guidelines to taking a test successfully.

Do not insist on completing each question before going to the next. This is extremely important. Remember one question raay only be worth one point! You will become nervous when you fail to find out its answer, making you lose your concentration and leading to worse results. However, answering the questions you are sur| you know the answers can make us more relaxed and confident.

Go through the test a second time working out the answers to more dif?ficult questions. Sometimes questions asked are answered in later questions asking for different things.

Usually a strong first impulse (冲动)means we know the answer and we don't really have to think about it too much, Going back to think about it usually makes you unsure and often causes a mistake. This is very common, so be very careful !

If you don't know the answer, write something. If you are answering a 4 possibility multiple choice question you will still have a 25% chance of be?ing correct!

Taking a test is as much for you as is for your teacher, so never cheat. If you cheat, you don't help yourself in the long run.

Finding a job is difficult. But what might be even more uhtoward is fig?uring out how to get used to the new environment that you are working in when you do finally manage to get a new job. Here are some tips for dealing with the adjustment period.

Be friendly to people. Any job is better when you are friends of the peo?ple that you are working with. You should be friendly to everyone that you are meeting. Actually listen to what these people tell you. Most people like making friends with those who are willing to listen.

Stay positive. One of the things that make it difficult to adjust to a new job is negativity. If you automatically(无意识地)make judgements about things at the office that you aren't going to like, then you're going to find it difficult to approach the job with a positive attitude. Try to focus on the things that you like about the work and stay away from anyone that is saying negative things on the job.

Keep relaxed. Accept the fact that you probably aren't going to get used to the new job immediately. You are going to make some mistakes;you are going to get confused or you're going to confuse others by doing things dif?ferently from what they're used to. Be relaxed. The thing that you really need to get used to a new job is just time.

Getting used to a new job or a new work environment isn't easy* but it doesn't have to be particularly difficult either. Get to know the people that you are working with and the unspoken rules of the place by paying atten?tion to what is going on around you and accepting that it's going to take some time to get used to it all! After you have adjusted to your new job* the way to do the job well is coming to the first question.

Good relationships are definitely good sources of happiness in life. We all want happy relationships but if we do not keep that relationship alive, it can also be one of the most distraught things in life. There may be no hard and fast rules in making good relationships, as each of us has different pref?erences and points of view as to what is a great relationship. The following are some major key players in making relationships work.

It is often said that building good relationships is all about communica?tion. Good communication indeed governs a good relationship—knowing the right thing to say, when to say it, how to say it, and accepting some things that are better left unsaid. I personally think communication must be broad?ened because relationships involve more decisions to make. From study to work* from money to entertainment and even in things about yourself or about your friends that you do not know, communication is essential in these aspects of the relationships.

Of course, being with someone is not saying that you totally agree with him or her all the time. You and your friends come from different family backgrounds, raised in different environments so there may be disagree?ments here and there. However, it is important in making relationships work to express disagreements without pushing the relationship to end. Again, good communication and learning to compromise(妥协)at times are essential.

As relationships last longer, you may also discover things about you and your friends that you may not have known before. Therefore, support?ing each other on both your "hidden selves" can also make a good relation?ship.

Love is an important aspect of building relationships and for me, I always believe that love needs open communication, respect, support and understanding each other in making relationships work.

5.  The underlined word " distraught" in Paragraph 1  probably means

A. helpless       B. surprising      C, funny     D. upsetting

  A.  supporting each other in anything helps build a good relationship

B.  a white lie is necessary sometimes

C.  compromises are essential at any time

D.  your friends need to have the same backgrounds with you

7. According to the text, which of the following are important for a good relationship?

a. communication       b. support       c. love        d. hidden selves
A. abd            B. acd          C. bed          D. abc

8. What would be the best title for the text?

  A.  The importance to express disagreements

B.  Keys to making relationships work

C.  Different opinions on good relationships

D.  Forbidden rules in building good relationships
