The curious European destinations that Chinese tourists love visiting

Bicester Village

According to a 2019 VisitBritain report, more than 260,000 Chinese tourists visit the UK each year. And where do they go? It claimed that “they are mostly interested in symbolic elements: the Royal Family, Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter and Downton Abbey”.

Then there's the shopping. Bicester Village, a vast retail estate (零售产业) on the outskirts of the Oxford shire town, is the second most visited UK attraction for Chinese tourists after Buckingham Palace, and three in four Chinese visitors head there.

King's College, Cambridge

A famous tree, for Chinese people at least, can be found in King's College, Cambridge. The willow (柳树), considered to be a holy thing to lost youth, is mentioned in a much-loved poem by Xu Zhimo, who spent a year studying at King's College — Taking leave of Cambridge Again:

The golden willows by the riverside;

Are young brides in the setting sun;

Their glittering reflections on the shimmering river;

Keep undulating in my heart.

Bonn

The former West German capital is another popular port of call. Chinese love classical music, particularly Beethoven, making his birthplace an obvious highlight of any trip to Europe. The city's tourist board offers maps in three foreign languages: English, Chinese and Japanese.

Verona

Both British and Chinese travelers flood to Venice, Rome and Florence, but Verona typically appears higher on the wish lists of China's tourists. That's because of the whole country 's adoration of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The play is popular on UK shores, of course, but the love is doubled in China as it was among the first of the Shakespeare's works to be translated into Chinese, because its plot bears a striking resemblance to a famous Chinese folk tale, The Butterfly Lovers. Expect to see queues at the popular House of Juliet on Via Cappello (a statue of the character stands beneath her balcony).

【题目】阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

The meeting had come to an end. Bob started to stand up, spilling his coffee over his notes. 'How embarrassing. I am getting so clumsy in my old age.' Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most embarrassing moments. Someone said, 'Come on, Frank. Tell us your most embarrassing moment.'

'My embarrassing moment? ' I said and began to fall into the memory of the past, 'Honestly, it is the most regretful one for me in my life.'

I grew up in San Pedro. My Dad was a fisherman, and he loved the sea. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family.

I wish you could have met my Dad. He was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him, he smelled like the ocean. He would wear his old canvas, foul-weather coat and his bibbed overalls. His rain hat would be pulled down over his brow. No matter how much my Mother washed them, they would still smell of the sea and of fish.

When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. He had this old truck that he used in his fishing business. That truck was older than he was. As he would drive toward the school, I would shrink down into the seat hoping to disappear. Half the time, he would slam to a stop and the old truck would belch a cloud of smoke. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over, give me a big kiss on the cheek. It was so embarrassing for me. I was twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me goodbye.

注意:续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

第一段:Then one day when we got to the school with his usual big smile, he started to lean toward me. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

第二段:Tears began to well up in Frank’s eyes, as he spoke. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

【题目】Fashion and Identity

For hundreds of years people have put some message in the type of clothing they wore. Long ago people started wanting to stand out from the “crowd” and be different from other people by means of changing their clothing. Some examples of these “standing out” became very popular and were followed by more people.1Nowadays, fashion has become a necessary part of one’s self-realization and clothing is basically a covering designed to be worn on a person’s body. This covering is a “necessity”, which brings a lot of variety into the lives of people and makes their image more complete.

The type of clothing completely depends on the person wearing it and becomes a reflection of personal identity. Lately, a lot is being heard about its meaning in the life of every single person on the planet. The choice of clothing is as important as identification through the color of hair, skin and gender. As every piece of clothing carries a strong message about its owner, every owner “nests” a certain value in it depending on his mindset or today’s mood. Therefore, the clothing of a person is a means of communication with the outside world.2

Clothes have a significant impact on the understanding of the people nearby as well as the person wearing them. For instance, a suit can make a person feel more confident and organized, which would eventually change even the gestures of the person. 3 Sometimes, fashion may play a vital role in a person’s life, especially when the person is applying for the job he wants. Fashion also creates a message that is required by a situation the person finds himself in. This can be simply proved by analyzing one’s reaction on people wearing different types of clothing.4 Thus, even the smallest companies make wearing a suit one of the requirements for their employees.

5 Fashion, with all its symbolism and features, form an outstanding base for personal and cultural identification. It is a part of the self-realization that is required for finding a place in life and has become a tool for achieving harmony with the inner world. The more diverse the society around us, the more fashion-trend will appear and surprise us.

A.Fashion helps us realize our dreams.

B.This was the moment when fashion appeared.

C.Fashion and identity are inseparable companions.

D.Clothing was designed to serve people in their daily life.

E.The preference is always given to people dressed in “business style”.

F.It is the way of telling people about the “state” and the “status” of its owner.

G.Wearing jeans after a suit may change the conduct of a person to a very casual one.
