There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. 1       But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with,an individual will have a low level of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. 2       If an individual is disabled environmentally,it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.

The importance of environment in determining an individuaFs intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins,Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died. 3       Peter was raised by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. 4       He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated (刺激) intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark's I. Q. was 125,twentyfive points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. 5

   A. So the second factor is what happens to the individual.

   B. Meanwhile,Mark was adopted by a poor foster home.

   C. Then they were placed in separate foster homes (收养家庭) .

   D. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others.

   E. Mark was raised in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college.

   F. Secondly, whether you are brought up in a city or a poor village is also significant.

   G. Given equal opportunities, the twins would have tested at roughly the same level.

The job of raising children is a tough one. Children don't come with an instruction handbook. And each child is different. So parents sometimes pull their hair out in frustration, not knowing what to do. But in raising children―as in all of life―what we do is influenced by our culture. 1       To Americans, the goal of parents is to help children stand on their own two feet. From infancy (幼年) ,each child may get his or her own room. As children grow, they gain more freedom to make their own choices. Teenagers choose their own forms of entertainment,as well as the friends to share them with. 2       Of course, many young adults still seek their parents' advice and approval for the choices they make. But once they "leave the nest" at around 18  to 21 years old, they want to be on their own,not "tied to their mother's apron strings".

The relationship between parents and children in America is very informal. American parents try to treat their children as individuals―not as extensions (延伸) of themselves. They allow them to realize their own dreams. Americans praise and encourage their children to give them the confidence to succeed. When children become adults, their relationship with their parents becomes more like a friendship among equals. 3       Even as adults, they respect and honor their parents.

Most young couples with children struggle with the issue of childcare. Mothers have traditionally stayed home with their children. In recent years, though,a growing trend is to put preschoolers in a daycare center so Mom can work. Many Americans have strong feelings about which type of arrangement is best. 4       Others insist that mothers are the best caregivers for children. A number of women are now leaving the workforce to become fulltime homemakers.

Being a parent is a tall order. 5       Some people are just deciding not to have children at all, since they're not sure it's worth it. But raising children means training the next generation and preserving our culture. What could be worth more than that?

   A. Naturally then,American parents teach their children basic American values.

   B. It takes patience, love, wisdom, courage and a good sense of humor to raise children.

   C. Some argue that attending a daycare center can be a positive experience for children.

   D. When they reach young adulthood, they choose their own careers and marriage partners.

   E. Disciplining children is another area that American parents have different opinions about.

   F. But contrary to popular belief, most adult Americans don't make their parents pay for

room and board when they come to visit.

   G. When parents find out more about their children's school performance, daily activities and attitudes towards life, they can better direct kids towards positive things in life.

1. Be an honest person with them. Don't hide things from them, and don't lie. Don't be afraid to say things that aren't very flattering about yourself. Getting them to trust you is the most important element in any relationship. If there's no trust, there's nothing there. 1

2. Make sure you give them respect. Now,respect isn't just simply treating them nicely. 2       You have to learn to adjust to their likings. Basically, learn to study your partners'

moods, wants and needs. Don't just think about yourself, but think about what your partners need out of it as well.

3. Make sure you are encouraging to your partners. Always be willing to help them and give them honesty at the right time. Make them feel you are someone they can really count on and build a future with. 3

4. Make sure you have a good sense of humor with them. Laughter is the key to happiness. Laugh a lot with them, and joke with them. Laughter may seem silly, but it's the secret to a lot in life. It will keep the sparks alive. 4

5. Make sure the communication is good. This usually goes along with trust,so always communicate how you feel even if it's something that upsets you. 5       If they did something that made you unhappy, tell them about it in a respectful manner. It's important to communicate this to them, not to keep it bottled up.
