In Los Angeles, drivers spend sixty-one hours every year stuck in traffic.These drivers know all too well how bad the traffic can be.“There're too many cars, and you can't move around a lot.”

Professor Cyrus Shahabi also knows about traffic jams.He lives more than 65 kilometers from his office at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles.He is always late even with the help of a navigation (导航) system.

He decided to develop a program called ClearPath for that.He says his program uses historical data to predict traffic conditions even before the driver leaves the house. “What’s unique is that we use a lot of data that’s currently become available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict what's going to happen in front of you when you leave home.”

Professor Shahabi says his system does more than just respond to current traffic conditions.With ClearPath, he says, a driver can decide what time he wants to leave, and ClearPath will give the fastest route.It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road.Professor Shahabi hopes to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities.

“I always thought thatLos Angeles had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, believe it or not, Singapore, Hong Kong certainly are examples that can immediately use this.”

Professor Shahabi hopes to share this new technology with companies that already have navigation systems, such as Google and Apple.

Martha Graham, born in 1894s was one of the most fa?mous dancers and creators of dance, whose influence on dance has been compared with the influence Picasso had on the mod?ern visual arts, Stravinsky had on music, or Frank Lloyd Wright had on architecture. She created almost two hundred dance pieces. She is often called the Mother of Modern Dance.

Earlier in her life, however, Martha did not know that she would become a dancer. At that time, the dancers were looked down on. So Martha's parents didn't approve of her desire to dance at the beginning. In 1916, she began her stud?ies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Re?lated Arts, founded by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, where Graham worked very hard to improve her ability to dance because she was considered too old to begin dancing.

  In 1936, Graham made her defining work, Chronicle which signalled the beginning of a new era in modern dance. The dance brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a dramatic manner. Influenced by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the Great Depression that followed, and the Spanish Civil War, it focused on depression and isolation, re?flected in the dark nature of both the set and costumes.

Graham continued to dance when past the age of seven?ty. Once again* she met with criticism from people who came to watch her shows. But she didn't give up. Her last comple?ted ballet was 1990's Maple Leaf Rag. A Dancer's Life is an introduction to Graham and her work. It tells about her dances and her dance group and shows some of their meth?ods.

Martha Graham received many awards during her life?time, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976. She was the first dancer to receive the country's highest civi卜ian honour. She died in 1991 at the age 

of ninety-six. In 1998, TIME magazine listed her as the "Dancer of the Centu?ry" and one of the most important people of the twentieth century.

When I was growing up, I was unhappy to be seen with my father. He was disabled and quite short. He used to walk together with me and his hand was on my arm for balance. At this time, people would look at us strangely. I was afraid to look at others but he never cares.

Why do people drink too much, eat too much ,smoke cigarettes or take drugs? What's to blame for all the bad behavior? Most people would say that, while these self-destructive(自我毁灭的) acts can have many root causes, they all have one obvious thing in common: they are all examples of failures of self-control, lacking the will power to resist them.

According to a recent study, however, if you really think about it, something about that simple answer doesn't quite make sense. In fact, it turns out that sometimes it's having will power that really gets you into trouble.

Think back to the time you took your very first sip(啜饮) of beer. Disgusting, wasn't it? When my father gave me my first taste of beer as a teenager, I wondered why anyone would voluntarily drink it. And smoking? No one enjoys their first cigarette—it tastes awful. So even though smoking, and drinking alcohol or coffee, can become temptation you need will power to resist, they never, ever start out that way.

Just getting past those first horrible experiences actually requires a lot of self-control. Ironically, only those who can control themselves well, rather than give in to them, can ever come to someday develop a "taste" for Budweiser beer, Marlboro cigarettes, or dark-roasted Starbucks coffee. We do it for social acceptance. We force ourselves to consume alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and even illegal drugs, in order to seem experienced, grown-up, and cool.

These bad habits aren't self-control failures—far from it. They are voluntary choices, and they are in fact self-control successes. Self-control is simply a tool to be put to some use, helpful or harmful. To live happy and productive lives, we need to develop not only our self-control ,but also the wisdom to make good decisions about when and where to apply it.
