A Samoan airline says that it is the world's first carrier to charge passengers by their weight. Samoa Air, which opened in 2012, asks passengers to give their personal weight during booking, which is then charged according to the length of a flight. The customers will also be weighed just before they board the plane.
"It is believed that all people throughout the world are the same size," Samoa Air CEO Chris Langton said. "Airplanes always run on weight, not seats."
"There is no doubt in my mind that this is the concept of the future. This is the fairest way of your travelling with your family or yourself."
Though the airline introduced the plan last November, it caught people's attention last week when the carrier began international flights to neighboring American Samoa.
Almost at the same time, a Norwegian economist, Bharat Bhatta, published a report suggesting that airlines should charge obese passengers more.
The Pacific Islands contain some of the world's most common countries for obesity, many ranking in the top 10, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Samoa is ranked number four, with 59.6 percent of the population considered obese, said the most recent WHO report.
According to Samoa Air's latest schedule, the airline charges up to $0.57 per kg for flights in Samoa and $1.03 per kg for its only international flight to American Samoa, around 250 miles.
Children under 12 are charged 75 percent of the adult rate, with fares also based on weight. Any overweight baggage is calculated at the same rate as the passenger's personal weight.
The plan could actually prove cheaper in some cases, such as for families travelling with small children, and Langton said customer reaction has mainly been "amazingly positive".
The idea of charging passengers by weight has been hotly discussed before, and in the US some airlines require those who do not fit into a seat comfortably to buy a second seat.

【解析】本文是一篇应用文,讲述了Samoa航空公司引进按重量收费的定价及一些人对此的观点。
(1)考查词义猜测。根据上文"Airplanes always run on weight, not seats."可知此处这种观念指的是航空公司按重量收费而不是座位的观念,故选D。(2)考查推理判断。根据第五段中的”a Norwegian economist, Bharat Bhatta, published a report suggesting that airlines should charge obese passengers more.“可知Bharat Bhatta支持按重量收费,所以他认为这种做法可以接受,故选B。
(3)考查推理判断。根据第七段中的”According to Samoa Air's latest schedule, the airline charges up to $1.03 per kg for its only international flight to American Samoa, around 250 miles.“可知飞往American Samoa按每公斤$1.03收费,所以100 kg的成年人收费应该是1.03×100=103,故选C。
(4)考查推理判断。根据第一段中的”A Samoan airline says that it is the world's first carrier to charge passengers by their weight.“以及下文的详细介绍可知本文主要讲的是Samoa航空公司引进按重量收费的定价,故选B。

Children have their own rules in playing games. They seldom need a referee(裁判) and rarely trouble to keep scores. They don't care much about who wins or loses, and it doesn't seem to worry them if the game is not finished. Yet, they like games that depend a lot on luck, so that their personal abilities cannot be directly compared. They also enjoy games that move in stages, in which each stage, the choosing of leaders, the picking-up of sides, or the determining of which side shall start, is almost a game in itself.
Grown-ups can hardly find children's games exciting, and they often feel puzzled(迷惑的)at why their kids play such simple games again and again. However, it is found that a child plays games for very important reasons. He can be a good player without having to think whether he is a popular person, and he can find himself being a useful partner to someone of whom he is ordinarily afraid. He becomes a leader when it comes to his turn. He can be confident, too, in particular games, that it is his place to give orders, to pretend to be dead, to throw a ball actually at someone, or to kiss someone he has caught.
It appears to us that when children play a game they imagine a situation under their control. Everyone knows the rules, and more importantly, everyone plays according to the rules. Those rules may be childish, but they make sure that every child has a chance to win.
(1)What is true about children when they play games?
A.They can stop playing any time they like.
B.They can test their personal abilities.
C.They want to pick a better team.
D.They don't need rules.
(2)To become a leader in a game the child has to ________.
A.play well
B.wait for his turn
C.be confident in himself
D.be popular among his playmates
(3)Why does a child like playing games?
A.Because he can be someone other than himself.
B.Because he can become popular among friends.
C.Because he finds he is always lucky in games.
D.Because he likes the place where he plays a game.
(4)The writer believes that _____.
A.children should make better rules for their games.
B.children should invite grown-ups to play with them.
C.children's games can do them a lot of good.
D.children play games without reasons.

Not all children want to listen to their parents. However, parents have been around for at least two decades or so longer than their kids. Here are four ways in which they might be right.
People should want to grow and change with time in a good way. People who hang around with those who are not as smart as they are will stagnate (停滞). So try to surround yourself with people who are worth learning from.
The more you learn, the less you really know. People tend to believe that they are right about everything before they've really learned anything about the world. This is largely due to contrast: people will realize how ignorant (无知) they were in the past after they've learned certain things, making them realize how much they've left to learn.
Growing up too fast is truly bad. However, these are the years when you are going to be more protected from the cruel realities of adulthood. You should try to appreciate this aspect of this life stage without being concerned with pushing your development too hard.
It is better to try and fail than fail to try. Children have to learn that failure is part of life. However, the sting (刺痛) of failure disappears gradually, and the regret about missed opportunities is going to sting far more for many adults. So don't stop going for certain goals because of a fear of failure.
A. Parents are wiser than you think.
B. It's hard enough for adults to accept.
C. Being around people who don't challenge you is a bad idea.
D. Your childhood years may not be the best years of your life.
E. They have some life experience, and it makes sense to listen to them.
F. People who bring out the best in others will reach their personal best.
G. By the time they have, they'll realize how complicated (复杂) the world can be.
