题目内容

Last year, I lost my best friend in high school. It seemed that everyone else’s life could just continue on in its  36  way, but mine couldn't. I wasn't sure how I was going to be able to face  37  and their gossip at school. I was forced to  38  my routine on Monday morning as usual. In the evening I returned home from school  39  completely defeated. All I wanted to do was  40  into bed and wallow(沉迷于)in my own self-pity. I pulled back the covers on my bed and  41  a pile of cards left by my dad. Each card included a(n)  42  that it was to be opened on a  43  night that week.
I made it through that week  44  my father. Each card  45  to say just what I needed to hear. Tuesday’s card said, “The past is painful to think about and the  46  is impossible to imagine. Don't try. Just take it one minute at a time.” On Wednesday my mood  47  when I read, “What you are feeling now is  48  and normal. It still feels very bad, but it is part of the healing  49 .” Friday’s card contained a poem he wrote. The last lines made me smile through my tears. “Whatever special  50  you face along life’s way, may you  51  that you will find the best in every day.” I was instructed to open the last card  52  the party I went to on Saturday night. In it he wisely reminded me to  53 . “The world isn't so bad after a good laugh. The more you laugh, the more you heal.” Each card was signed, “Love, Dad.”
My world once collapsed (fell down) but I  54  the difficult breakup eventually. It owed to my dad, who made his  55  known when he couldn't be present.

小题9:D 考查介词短语。下文提到每张卡片都带给作者不同的感受,作者最终熬过了那个星期,所有的这一切都是“因为(because of))”父亲无微不至的关爱。in favor of “赞同”, regardless of “不管,不顾”,in search of “寻找”。

There was a time when I thought my dad didn’t know a thing about being a good father. I couldn’t   36  him ever saying the words “I love you.” It seems to me his only purpose in life was to say “  37  ” to anywhere I wanted to go and anything I wanted to do, including getting a   38 . Some parents bought their kids cars when they got their driver’s licenses. Not my dad ---- he said that I’d have to get a job and buy my own.
So that is what I did. I got a job at a very nice restaurant and   39  every penny I could and   40  I had enough to buy my car, I did! The day I brought that car home, my dad was the first one I wanted to   41  to. “Look, dad, a car of my own. If you ever want a ride, I’ll only   42 you five dollars.” I offered with a smile.
“I see,” was all he said.
One day, there was something wrong with my father’s truck. So he needed a   43  to work. The sun wasn’t even up when we left the house ,   44  it was already getting warm out. It was going to be a(n)   45  day. As I dropped my dad off, I   46  him, dressed in his work clothes, getting his   47  from the truck (车尾箱) of my car. Watching his sun-weathered face, and even from a distance I could tell there were   48  lines than I ever remembered being there before. I realized how hard my dad works for the family. My father is a cement finisher(水泥修整工).
In that instant, it  49  to me that he actually got down on his hands and knees to sweat over hot concrete to make a living for his family. And he did this day in and day out,   50  hot it got. Never, not once, had I hear him   51  about it. To him we were “worth” it. And never once did he “charge” us for it.
When he closed the trunk, his tools set off to the side, he walked over to my window to   52  me five dollars. I rolled down the window and said “Good-bye, dad. Keep your five dollars. It’s my   53 . Don’t work too hard. I love you.”
His   54  met mine, then glanced away in the direction of his waiting tools, he   55  his throat and said, “Oh, and… me, too.”

It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.
The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货), saving us from having to walk along long distances from where we live.
I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.
People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.

My l4-year-old son, John, and I spotted the coat which was hanging at a secondhand clothing store in Northampton Mass. While the other coats drooped, this one looked as if it were   36  itself up. The coat had beautiful tailoring, a Fifth Avenue label and a(an)  37  price of $28, which was popular just then with   38  , but could cost several hundred dollars new. This coat was even better, bearing that   39  of classic elegance. John tried it on and the fit was perfect.
John   40  the coat to school the next day and came home wearing a big smile "Did the kids like your coat?" I asked. "They loved it," he said,   41  folding it over the back of a chair and smoothing it flat. Over the next few weeks, a   42  came over John. Agreement replaced contrariness and reasoned discussion replaced fierce   43 . He became more mannerly and   44 , eager to please. He would generously loan his younger brother his tapes and lecture him   45  his behavior.
When I mentioned this incident to his teacher and   46  what caused the changes, she said laughing. "It   47  be his coat!" Another teacher told him she was giving him a good   48  not only because he had earned   49  but because she liked his coat. At the library, we ran into a friend “Could this be John?" he asked surprisingly,   50  John's new height, assessing the cut of his coat and extending his hand, one gentleman to another.
John and I both know we should never   51  a person's clothes for the real person within them.   52  there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see and for   53  what is on the inside to what is on the outside.
For John it is a time when it is as easy to try on different approaches to   54  as it is to try on a coat. The whole world, the whole future is stretched out ahead, a vast landscape   55  all the doors are open. And he could picture himself walking through those doors wearing his wonderful, magical coat.

My father was in the navy, which meant that my mother was married to both my father and the sea. As was often the case, we had to pack our belongings into boxes and   36   those we had grown to love. We would arrive at our new home and find ourselves once again   37  at the pier(码头)waving good-bye to my father as his   38   pulled him away from us. My mother would turn my brother and me around before the ship was out of   39 , wipe our tears, and take us back home to start the process of   40   in the new environment again.
Throughout the years of changing   41  , schools and friends, there remained one constant in my childhood — my mother. For both my    42  and me, she was the cook, maid and teacher. She played these roles while   43  some type of part-time job. Leaving a promising career is just one of the   44  which my mother made for my family as we moved around the world with our father every three years or so.   45  she had to deal with only a small budget, my mother   46  managed to make each house to be the very home that is safe and   47 .
This probably sounds like a depressing way to live,   48  with two small children: “single” parenthood, short-term friendships, and the inability to   49   a career or establish a home. But it was not for my mother. She turned this   50  into adventure for us all! Each relocation was a chance to   51  another part of the world. My mother greeted each new culture, climate and neighborhood. Each new house was a   52  to rearrange furniture, make curtains and   53  pictures. Every part-time job was an opportunity to learn something new and work with interesting people.
No matter how difficult the life was, she was always having a   54  attitude. She always had strength in the face of struggle and change. My mother was so   55  all those years of my childhood — she was my island in a sea of change. She is my hero.

I   38  into my back right pocket to grab the money to pay and noticed that there was no money there.  I started to get   39  .  I knew my pocket book was in the car and I was sure I had put the    40   in my back right pocket. I looked at the cashier with wet eyes and a   41 look not knowing what to do.  There were people behind me on the line. She told me to speak with the courtesy counter (爱心柜台).  I  42   and said, “Really? It's  43  , no one would hand that in!”  But she  44   me to. “You never know…” she said.
I decided that there was no   45  in checking so I walked up to a woman behind the counter and said “I have to ask, did anyone   46  cash by any chance?” She asked “How much?" My face then  47  .  “$200 in the form of one hundred dollar bills.” I replied.  She said, “  48 , yes, someone did!" I was so   49 ! “Who? I want to thank her.”  She pointed to a young girl about 10 years old and says, “She did.”
I walked over to the mom and hugged her. She said, “It wasn't me, it was my    50 ” .  I said “I know, I wanted to thank you both,    51   she found it ... it's because of you that I got this back.” I was so happy, I was almost in tears.
The next day at work, a person in another department   52  me tickets to the circus.  He handed me 5 tickets. Almost  53   that young girls face popped (突然出现) in my head.  After work I went back to the supermarket and stopped at the courtesy counter and asked if she had any idea who that woman was. She smiled and said, “Yes, She is a friend of mine”.  Then I asked her to do me a favor and pass along these 5 tickets to her.
She told me that the family of the little girl who found my money were not rich so they would really   54  this.  She also said that they had 3 children, so five was the   55  number of tickets!
