15.Most of my friends are moving outside the city..to avoid the noise,smog,traffic,and crime of the city.
One friend says,"The air is heavily polluted in the city,so I prefer to live outside, where the air is clean."
Another friend is unpleased with the traffic,"Downtown is crowded with cars!You can't find a parking place,and the traffic jams are terrible."Everyone is worried about crime,"The city is full of criminals-it's too dangerous."
For them, the rural(乡村的) life is a cure for all problems, green grass, flowers, swimming pools, barbecues, and so on.Yet after they have lived there for a year or so,they realize that rural life is not so pleasant as they were expecting. Why?Their gardens! They soon learn that the main part of rural life is yard work. After they work all weekend in their gardens, they're too tired to swim in their pools or cook some meat on their barbecues.And they can't live in the countryside without a car.Most of them moved to the countryside to avoid traffic, but now they're blocked on a busy freeway two hours every day to drive to work downtown.
My opinions about urban life are different-I love to live downtown!Why?First,in the city,I can enjoy nature.I can walk through the park.smell.the flowers,sit on the grass and visit the animals in the zoo.Yet I don't have to do yard work or feed the animals. Also,I can get everywhere by bus; if there is a traffic jam,I can walk home.I think the criminal life will reflect changes in society too; if people are buying homes outside the city,the criminals will soon follow.Criminals want to avoid noise,smog,and pollution,too.Then,overcrowding and crime will be problems of the suburbs instead of the city!

3.Most people make a donation if they want to help those in need. And they hope that if they join demonstrations or hand out leaflets, they'll make others aware of the terrible conditions some people face. But 47-year-old British comedian,Eddie Izzard, did something completely different. He decided to raise money by running 1,100 miles through England,Wales,Northern Ireland and Scotland. And he managed to raise more than£200,000!
How long did it take him to run 1,100 miles?Believe it or not,it took him just 51 days. For six days out of every seven he ran at least 26 miles. In other words,he ran 43 marathons in less than two months, before he finished in great style and pouring rain in London's Trafalgar Square!
When asked how he felt,he told the BBC that he was planning to"sleep for a week".He thanked the people who had waited for him in Trafalgar Square despite the rain. They had all come to support him and to applaud his incredible achievement.
And the comedian admitted that his journey was pretty painful. He had to have his feet bandaged every day but still lost several of his toenails, and he had blisters (水泡)all over his feet.He wouldn't have been able to do what he did if he hadn't taken ice baths for his legs at the end of each day. These baths helped to"stop your legs inflating to twice the size of an elephant",as Eddie commented.
People who have no idea about running and experts alike are impressed with what he has achieved.Andy Dixon, editor of Runner's World,a magazine for long-distance runners, says,"Covering 26 miles in a day at whatever speed for 43 runs,it's demanding.A five-hour marathon is fairly decent pace. It's a massive achievement.
So,how did he do it?Well, when he decided to run,he wasn't even particularly fit.He ran his marathons slowly at first.Ten hours a day to begin with and,as he got fitter,he got faster. In the end he was finishing in just over five hours. But fitness alone was not enough. What was more important was the fact that he wanted to make a difference to other people's lives.
What Eddie Izzard did was so special that the documentary of his run has been made into an inspiring film:Believe!"You've got to believe you can be something else,"Eddie says in the film."I've done that a few times. That's why I keep going."

20.While other students were taking part in workshops or planning baths for their pets on a typical Thursday morning,I spent mine doing an internship(实习)at Western Massachusetts Labor Action,a non-profit organization that helps low-income members of society.
Upon arriving there,I didn't know what to expect.Do people just come in and ask for food?Is there more paperwork or in-the-field action? This opportunity, however, helped me to answer my questions.
One morning, while my partner and I were doing the office work, our supervisor(主管)called us into his office to listen to a conversation on the phone.
On the other end of the line,a 65-year-old man living in a nearby town said desperately that their electricity company was shutting off his heat due to his debt issues."You are my last hope.Otherwise,my family and I will have a very hard time surviving the cold winter,"the man said, his voice losing contro1.Hearing this terrible news,my supervisor frowned, but told him,"Don't worry.I'11 do everything I can to help you."Then he quickly called the electricity company.
After a long negotiation,my supervisor managed to give the 65-year-old man a debt    repayment(偿付)system, which meant that he could pay off his debt a little bit per month. He was calling to tell the man the good news when the man suddenly shouted that he was having a heart attack. My partner and I just looked at each other and kept silent. After seconds that felt like hours, the man told us that it was a false alarm and that he was all right.
I was amazed at this man and his family's situation, but was even more impressed that my supervisor had saved them from a hardship like a whole winter without heat.My supervisor was a superhero! From that moment on,I have had great respect for all forms of community service and felt thankful that I could be a part of it-giving back what I have to the community and helping others achieve happiness.

7.Two of the saddest words in the English language are"if only".I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words,because they convey regret,lost opportunities,mistakes,and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying,"Take the extra minute to do it right."I always try to live by the"extra minute"rule.When my children were young and likely to cause accidents,I always thought about what I could do to avoid an"if only"moment,whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter,or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.
I don't only avoid those"if only"moments when it comes to safety.It's equally important to avoid"if only"in our personal relationships.We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say"I love you"or"I forgive you."When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday,I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn't be here.But then I thought about the fact that he's 84years old and I realized that I shouldn't give up an opportunity to see him.I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say"if only"about something,but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality.And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right,or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection,I know that I'm doing the right thing.I'm buying myself peace of mind and that's the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.
59.Which of the following is an example of the"extra minute"rule?D
A.Start the car the moment everyone is seated.
B.Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.

D.Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.

A.keep her appointment with the eye doctor
