If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.
Take the taxi driver as an example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high- class Bens with a fare (车费) of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to take you to any place you want to, say that you have some business to attend to (料理), and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver will not be anxious.
The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests (客人), but also serve outside eaters. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining room to have their meals. The only thing they need to do is to show their cards to the waiter. You can easily use any old room card to take a couple of friends to eat dinner without paying.
The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. But to my surprise, they can remember everything so clearly that the workers only need to say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid by their boss.
With so many loopholes (漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven (天堂) to those who love to take “small advantages”. But the strange thing is: all the taxi passengers will always come back to pay their fare after they have dealt with their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms; and workers always give an honest answer of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good trust in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman (绅士)”.【小题1】

After the first day, little Tommy came home with a very serious look on his face. He didn’t kiss his mother hello. Instead, he went straight to his room and started studying. I can still remember my first day at school. I was only 6 years old at that time. It was a very big room. I sat at the desk near the window, but I couldn’t see anything because the windows were too high. There was a big map of the world on the wall. But I don’t think I was worried or unhappy at that time. There was another little boy next to me. He sat there and kept quiet at first. Then he began to cry, because he didn’t want to stay there.
More and more students came in , but the boy didn’t stop crying “ Mom, I want to go home. ” He cried again and again. Later , the teacher came in . She went to the little boy, and said something to him. I couldn’t hear what she said. Soon the boy stopped crying and began to smile.
To this day, I still don’t know what the teacher said to the little boy.

On the way back from work every evening, more often than not there would be a homeless man standing at the exit of the freeway (快车道). He looked to be in his late 40s but was probably a lot younger. He had shoulder length straight black hair and a short beard.
Every day after work I would remember to gather any spare change, and put it aside to give to him if I saw him. A feeling of joy would come over me every time I saw him, while coming off the ramp (坡道). So did he. Sometimes the red light would be on for a minute and we would ask each other about our day. His answer would always be the same, “I’m blessed!”
Then one day I was called into my boss’s office and was told that I was being laid off. For the rest of that day all I could think of was “how am I going to provide for my kids as a mother, how am I going to pay rent?”
Needless to say that on my way home that day I was very sad and upset. I didn’t remember to look for my spare change and keep it ready like I usually did. Yet there he was as always, as I turned the ramp. He set his eyes on me, while still smiling and waving at others as usual.
While I was waiting for the red light to turn, he strolled (闲逛) over to my car. He had a big smile. He looked at me straight in the eyes and said, “Today I will give you a dollar.” He then reached into his pocket and pulled out a dollar bill.
You see that day he taught me a valuable lesson more than a dollar bill. No matter what material things are taken from you, no one can take away your choice to be joyful. Every time I’m faced with challenges, I think of the homeless man’s valuable lesson and remember that I am blessed.

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon. They don’t feel hurt. If the same two people meet again, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand. Friendships between us develop more slowly but may become lifelong (终身的)feelings, extending (延伸) deeply into both families.
There is another difficult point for us to understand. Although Americans treat friends warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to them if it requires a great deal of time. But in China, we are usually generous with our time. We, as hosts, will appear at an airport even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take a day off from our work to act as guides to our friends: It is opposite in America, Americans can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily plans. They will probably expect the visitors to get themselves from the airport to the hotels. And they expect the visitors will phone them from there. Once the visitors arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.
For Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to restaurants, except for business matters. Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. So accept their hospitality (好客) at home and enjoy your visit in America!
