Artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能) can help us make phone calls. It can guide us to where we want to go. It can play games. And now, AI can do even more things.

Researchers from Microsoft have created the first machine translation system that can translate news articles from Chinese to English, Business Standard reported.

According to Microsoft’s official website, researchers tested the system by asking it to translate hundreds of sentences taken from news stories. Then, language experts compared the results to two translations that were done by humans. The experts concluded that the system’s translations were as good as the human translations.

Machine translation is always challenging. This is partly because different words can be used to express the same meaning. It can be hard to say which word is more “correct”.

Experts used several methods to improve the system’s translation abilities. “Much of our research is really inspired (得到启发) by how we humans do things,” lead researcher Liu Tieyan said.

One method is called dual learning. In this method, the system translates every sentence from Chinese to English, as well as translates the sentences back from English into Chinese. This way, the system can improve itself and learn from its own mistakes. This is similar to what humans do to make sure their translations are accurate (准确的).

Another method makes use of deliberation networks . The researchers taught the system to repeat the process of translating the same sentence over and over. Gradually, the system can improve the quality of its translations. This is similar to how people revise their own writing by going through it again and again.

1.Microsoft created a system that can _____.

A. make phone calls B. give people directions

C. play games with people D. translate news articles

2.What did the experts say about the system’s translations?

A. They were not accurate.

B. They were as good as human translations.

C. They were better than human translations.

D. It’s hard to tell whether the translations were correct.

3.Dual learning trains the system to translate _____.

A. more quickly B. different sentences

C. more accurately D. the same sentence repeatedly

4.What is the main idea of the story?

A. What artificial intelligence can do for us.

B. How sentences are translated from Chinese to English.

C. How the machine translation system was developed.

D. Why Microsoft created a machine translation system.

Now students’ English handwriting gets worse and worse. That makes their teachers feel worried. Is your English handwriting beautiful? If not, here are four steps that really work!

◆Use paper that has lines

Using paper that has lines can keep you writing straight when you write English words or sentences. Those lines on the paper can help you to write words in the right size. Be sure to fill the lined space completely. And make sure those capital letters(大写字母) are written properly.

◆Slow down

If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. For some kids, going slower makes the handwriting clear. If you write too fast, it’s hard for you to stop where you should, and even worse, you may make more mistakes.

◆ Hold your pencil right

When you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. Some kids press(按,压) down really hard when they write. That makes the handwriting not nice. Try to relax yourself and don’t hold the pencil so hard. Let your writing appear nice and clean. If you do so, people will guess you are a student with a good habit.

◆Draw more pictures

Drawing can improve your handwriting. You need to use the skills to control your pencil better when you are drawing pictures. Even though you have no chance to draw at school, you can practice by yourself at home.

Handwriting is very important. Imagine you are a world-famous movie star or a well-known sports player, what do you do when your fans run up to you? Give them your autographs (亲笔签名), of course!

Habits in Russia

There is an old saying that says when in Rome, do as the Romans do. I learned the meaning of this when I stayed in Russia as a visiting scholar(学者).

One day I invited some of my Chinese friends to a famous local restaurant in Moscow. My guests and I were excited about our meeting. We had a lively talk until the waiter told me that we were too loud. We lowered(降低) our voices. 1. The waiter came over to us two more times with the same message.

How bad an impression(印象) we must have left on the local people! In China, it's natural and important for a host(主人) to make a lively atmosphere(气氛). However, in Russia and Western countries, having a meal in a public place means you must keep your voice low. 2. I felt bad about this.3.

4. My Russian friend Andrey always looks around and thinks for a while before leaving home. I asked him why he did this. “Aha,” Andrey said, “In Russia, people always spend about a minute going over things and plans in their minds before leaving home. 5.

Finding the differences between cultures is so much fun. I like to keep my eyes and mind open.

C.You need to be polite to others.

D.So they won't leave anything necessary behind.

Dear Editor,

My sister Becky keeps singing a song to me, though she knows I don’t like it. She even tells her friends to sing it to me! It really makes me angry.

Dale

Dear Dale,

Your sister seems to think it’s fun to make you angry, and the way you react (反应) may add to her fun.

You could try to ask your sister nicely to stop. Anytime she sings it in the future, don’t react or get angry. If you need to, leave the room. When you don’t react, she may become bored and stop singing.

Your parents may have advice on how to deal with this, too.

Editor

Dear Editor,

When people ask what I want to be when I grow up, I feel pressured because I want to do so many things. Most of the time, I answer, “I don’t know.”

Cindy

Dear Cindy,

Those people might just be trying to get to know you better. What they are really asking is, “What interests you now?”

The next time someone asks what you want to be, you could say something like “Today I think I’d like to be a writer or an artist. But ask me tomorrow, and I may change my mind”.

Editor

Dear Editor,

My best friend’s parents ended their marriage (婚姻). She’s having trouble going between houses and is sad all the time. It makes me feel sad, too.

Sally

Dear Sally,

It’s hard to watch a friend go through something hard. Help your friend make the best of her time at each house, asking her to hang out, or even just staying with her when she’s having a hard time. If she’s not better soon, talk to a trusted adult.
