International students in Christine Rhodes’ English class in Australia share their impressions (印象) of places they have visited in Australia.
Canberra, the nicest city in Australia
I went for a short holiday to Canberra. My uncle lives there. It’s the nicest city in Australia, a little bit similar to Cairns. There’re lots of big rivers and trees around the city.
Siggi Siebold from Germany
The small city of Mount Isa
I went to Mount Isa six months ago. It’s a long way from Brisbane — about 2,000 km. It’s a small city, with a population of 21,000, but it has all the basic facilities such as a base hospital, six schools and supermarkets. Here the weather is hot and gets very little rain. There’re two big lakes to keep rainwater for people in the city to drink.
Indra Ekanayake
Lake Moondarra and a mine (矿)
In Mount Isa, there’s a dam (水坝) called Lake Moondarra. At weekends you can go there with your friends, and it is beautiful. On the lake, there is water skiing. Also, people can go fishing there.

Many middle school students like watching TV very much. But from Monday to Friday, they must go to school. So on Saturday and Sunday they stay at home and watch TV from morning to night. They don’t know it’s bad for their eyes. Usually children like to eat fish, meat and chicken and don’t like vegetables or fruit. They don’t know eating more vegetables or fruit. They don’t know eating more vegetables and fruit is better than eating meat.
At school, the children only do a few minutes of sports or never do any sports. The teachers must know it isn’t good for their health.

Students learn their lessons in class. In class teachers teach them.Students sit in the classroom listening to the teacher. This is a way of learning. Is this the only way for students to learn? Of course not. There is another way to learn. That is students can teach themselves.Every student can teach himself, and every student is teaching himself when he is learning something. For example,if you cannot remember something when you are doing your homework.what will you do? You can look at your book to find the answer. This is a way to teach yourself. And it is not a difficult way.We can do this at any place and at any time.
How to teach yourself? The first thing you must do is reading.Read something you are interested in,not you have to read. The second is that you must ask yourself questions. The question is something you don’t understand,or you want to know more about. You can write down these questions.A clever student is usually good at asking questions. The third is to answer the question yourself by thinking hard,by reading the text or other books, and sometimes by asking other people. These are the ways of teaching yourself. And you must do these all by yourself. If you keep doing like these for a long time, you are sure to succeed in your study.

Started in 1636, Harvard (哈佛) University is the oldest of all the colleges and universities in the United States. Yale, Princeton, Columbia and Dartmouth were opened soon after Harvard.
In the early years, these schools were nearly the same. Only young men went to college. All the students studied the same subjects, and everyone learned Latin and Greek. Little was known about science. And few people knew that one kind of school could teach everything that was known about the world. When the students graduated, most of them became ministers or teachers.
In 1782, Harvard started a medical school for young men who wanted to become doctors. Later, lawyers could study in Harvard’s law school. In 1825, besides Latin and Greek, Harvard began to teach modern languages, such as French and German. Soon it began to teach American history.
As knowledge increased, Harvard and other colleges began to teach many new subjects. Students were allowed to choose the subjects that interested them.
Today, there are many different kinds of colleges and universities. Most of them are made up of smaller schools that deal with special fields of learning. There’s so much to learn that one kind of school can’t offer all.

One of the things to be learnt in a foreign language is guessing all the time what kind of thing to come when listening to someone talking. People do this all the time in their own language, so it is necessary to do this in a foreign language, too. Here are some examples.

2.”I feel so tired these days.” “I think you’d better…”

“Everything happens for the best.” Whenever I faced disappointment, my mother would say this to me.
After I graduated form college in 1932, I decided to find a job in radio as a sports announcer(广播员). I went to Chicago and knocked at the door of every station. But unluckily, I was refused every time.
At one station, a kind lady told me that big stations wouldn’t hire(雇佣) a person without any experience and suggested that I try my luck at smaller stations. Following her advice, I went back to Dixon, where I had grown up. There were no such jobs in Dixon, and my father said a newly-opened store wanted a local athlete to work for it. I wanted this job, but I was refused again.
“Everything happens for the best,” Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to look for a job. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office, I felt so frustrated. “How can I become a sports announcer if I can’t get a job in a radio station?” I asked aloud.
While I was waiting for the elevator, I heard someone calling. It was MacArthur. “What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he asked me to have a try. He was pleased with my performance, and he offered me a chance to work there.
On my way home, I thought of my mother’s words: “If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn’t have happened if without the failure before.”
