Rivers are one of our most important natural resources(资源). Many of the world’s great cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river running through it that plays an important part in the lives of its people.
Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is the Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation; ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in southeastern Asia. The greatest of all for navigation(航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil(巴西). It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles up it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun. In order to increase the supply(供给) of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam (大坝)across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate(灌溉) their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries.
However, large cities and industries that are located on rivers often cause problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals and other materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits of these natural resources.

Taking away a city’s rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can’t eat or use. If we kept these things we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.
In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside of the city to a dump(垃圾站). Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewagesystem takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs(澡盆) and other places.
To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you’d never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.
In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change into something called humus(腐殖土), which looks like black earth. It is rich with kinds of things that feed plants and help make them grow.

Now more and more people in the world are getting fatter. This troubles them a lot. Experts(专家) say that it has a lot to do with  our eating habits.
Our eating habits are very important for good health and a strong body. Most of us like eating sweets and ice cream better than vegetables and rice. Sweets and ice cream are not bad for us if we eat them at the end of a meal. If we eat them before a meal, they may take away our appetite(食欲).
It's important for us to eat our meal in the same period  each day. When we feel worried or excited, we may not want to eat. A long time ago, in England, some judges(法官) often decided whether a man was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread. If the man could not swallow(吞) the bread, it meant that he wasn't telling the truth. Because when a man is worried about something, he will have trouble in swallowing anything dry, because he loses his appetite.

The widespread number of food scandals(丑闻)in  China is making many people pause before they put their chopsticks in their mouths. They are wondering if the food they are eating is clean, healthy and nutritious(营养) or does it contain(包含) something harmful that will cause disease?
Most of the food we eat today is processed food(加工食品).That means the foods we buy in stores and supermarkets, especially packaged foods, are prepared in factories.Chemicals are added to the foods in these factories to  make them look better, taste better and last longer on the shelf. The chemicals are supposed to be harmless and there are laws that regulate(控制) which chemicals can and cannot be used.Unfortunately, some producers do not obey the laws.

Why did he do it? Why did he break the law and endanger people’s  health? The answer is simple:he wanted to make more money. It was a moral failing, and this is at the heart of the food scandals in China.Too many people focus on making money and not on the effects their actions can have on others.
