This March, the H7N9 virus hit Zhejiang, Shanghai, Anhui, Jiangsu and so on. It seemed that most people who were infected£¨±»¸ÐȾ£©with H7N9 had the common flu. Some people suffered from a fever or a cough.
Don¡¯t be afraid---it¡¯s not easy to be infected with the virus. Here is some advice to help you protect yourself when it comes.
Wash your hands. You need to wash your hands with soap and hot water before you eat, after you use the toilet , and after you touch animals, because your hands may carry viruses.
Cover your nose and mouth, when someone sneezes£¨´òÅçÌ磩or coughs, flu viruses can travel as far as one meter through the air, so you¡¯d better stand a proper distance while talking to someone who has a cold. And always cover your nose and mouth with a piece of paper when you sneeze or cough, and then clean your hands.
Wear a mask£¨¿ÚÕÖ£©. Some doctors say that masks can stop the flu as much as 80%, but if you don¡¯t wash your hands often, it¡¯s no use wearing a mask. And it¡¯s necessary to wear a mask in the groups of people.
Do sports often. Exercise will help your body strong enough to resist the virus.

Letter A
To the Editor:
Why do our children have 11 weeks of summer vacation? Many years ago, 85 percent of Americans worked on farms. Children needed summer vacation because they helped with the farm work. Today only 3 percent of Americans work on farms. But our children still have long summer vacations.
American students lose one or two months of learning during their summer vacations. Away from school for so many weeks students forget what they learned. Experts say that students lose maths skills and reading skills. At the beginning of school in September, teachers have to review last year¡¯s studies for the first four to six weeks of school.
Summer vacations are not great opportunities for learning. Most parents work outside of the home. They can¡¯t be with their kids during the long summer months. Some families can pay for summer camps, but many can¡¯t. Most children stay home and watch TV. They are bored. Most children do not learn new skills during the summer.
James, Teacher
    Letter B
To the Editor:
I am against a longer school year. I believe people learn everywhere, not just in school. I believe children gain experience in the world. Summer vacation is a great opportunity. Kids can discover the world outside of school. They can learn to do things they can¡¯t learn in a classroom. They can learn to swim and ride bikes. They can travel or go to summer camps. They can take time to do things like cooking and art. Some can get summer jobs. They can get work experience or help people in the community. They can spend time with people of other ages. Basically, they can get more experience in the world.
Long summer vacations give families time together. During the school year, everyone is busy. During summer vacations, we take time to do things together. Vacations are good for families.

A teacher let her class play a game. The teacher told each child to bring a bag with some potatoes. Each potato would be given a name of a person that the child hated, so the number of potatoes in his/her bag would depend on the number of people the child hated. Some children had two potatoes, some had three and others had up to five potatoes. The teacher then told the children to carry the bag wherever they went for a week. After a week, the teacher asked, ¡±How did you feel?¡± The children started complaining about the unpleasant smell coming from the rotten potatoes when they had to carry the heavy and smelly potatoes everywhere they went.
Then the teacher said,¡± This is the same when you carry your hate for somebody inside your heart. The smell of hate will pollute your heart and you will carry it with you wherever you go. If you cannot bear the smell of rotten potatoes for just one week, can you imagine what it is like to have the smell of hate in your heart for your lifetime?¡±

You either have it, or you don¡¯t¡ªa sense of direction, that is. But why is that some people would find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose themselves in the next street?
Scientists say we¡¯re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory(ÀíÂÛ) is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don¡¯t have it, we lose it.
¡°Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,¡± says Jim Martland, Research Director of this project. ¡°However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.¡±
Jim Martland also emphasized(Ç¿µ÷) that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:
If you are using a map, turn it to the way you are facing.
If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
The simple way of finding your direction is by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help you find out where you are.
Now you will never get lost again!

Being safe in your everyday life needs knowledge. If you remember the following information, your life will be much safer.
Don¡¯t use earphones when running in the schoolyard or on the street. You will keep yourself from the outside world and can be easily surprised.
Schoolbags should be carried towards the front of your body instead of putting them on your back. When buses are crowded, it is easy enough for thieves to steal the things in your bag on your back.
If you are followed by a stranger, cross the street and go to the other way, let the stranger know that you know he or she is after you. Next, go and get help from others if it is necessary. Don¡¯t go home directly. You are safer on the street than you are in your home or in a lift.
If you have to take a bus to a place far away, try to get to the stop a few minutes before the buses leave. This prevents a stranger from studying you. On buses, don¡¯t sit alone, sit behind a driver or with friends. Don¡¯t sleep.
Don¡¯t play with matches(»ð²ñ£©or candles, because it may cause fire. If your house catches fire and you have to escape through smoke, move on your hands and knees with your head 30 to 60 centimeters(ÀåÃ×£©above the floor. Please remember there is cleaner, cooler air near the floor during the fire.

We¡¯ve talked about snails£¨ÎÏÅ££© and their slow move. But much of the time snails don¡¯t move at all. They are in their shells ¡ªsleeping.
¡¡¡¡Hot sun will dry out a snail¡¯s body. So at the least sign of hot sun, a snail draws its body into his shell. A snail will die in a heavy rain. So when it rains, a snail does the same thing, too. A snail can sleep for as long as it needs to. It spends all the winter months in its shell, asleep.
¡¡¡¡In the spring the snail wakes up. Its body, about three inches long, comes out from the shell. When hungry, the snail looks for food. Its eyes, at the end of the top feelers, are very weak. But its sense of smell is very strong. It helps the snail to find food and the new greens.
¡¡¡¡A snail¡¯s mouth is no bigger than the point of a pin. Yet it has 256,000 teeth! The teeth are very small, and you can¡¯t see them. If you put a snail in a hard paper box, it will eat its way out! And if a snail wears out its teeth, it will grow new ones.

Napoga  is a 12¡ªyear---old  girl in Ghana, Africa. It is hard for her family to get clean water . Every morning , she leaves home at half past five to get clean water for her family in a village far away . It takes her six hours to get enough clean water for daily cooking and drinking. She has no time to go to school or to play with her friends. Millions of people in the world are like Napoga . They can¡¯t get enough clean water to keep healthy.
Earth Day is April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember it. The water we use is the most important natural resource(×ÔÈ»×ÊÔ´)on the earth.
Water covers 70 perent of the earth¡¯s surface (±íÃæ). But most of that is sea water. We can¡¯t use it for very many things.  Fresh water covers only one percent of the earth¡¯s surface.
You probably feel lucky that your life isn¡¯t as hard as Napoga¡¯s . But that doesn¡¯t mean you don¡¯t have to worry about water. We all face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers , lakes , and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish , too. Now, thirty-four percent of all kinds of fish are dying out.
How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First, they pollute the air. Then , when it rains, the rain water comes down and makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain, called acid rain(ËáÓê), is also bad for plants ,animals and buildings.
Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won¡¯t have enough clean water. We have to learn how to save more water for ourselves  and our children. Here is some advice for saving water:
¡ñ Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. You can save as much as 450liters(Éý)each month.
¡ñ Leaky taps £¨Â©Ë®µÄÁúÍ·£©waste a lot of water. Fix them right away.
¡ñYou can easily cut your 10¡ªminute showers in half---and you¡¯ll be just as clean.
¡ñWhen you wash dishes, don¡¯t let the water run.
¡ñOnly wash clothes when you have a lot to wash. If your washing machine isn¡¯t full , you are wasting water!
