Have successful people ever felt sad? Do they have any ¡°secrets¡± to success? The answers to these questions can be found in US president Barack Obama¡¯s ¡°back to school¡± speech. Here is an excerpt(ժ¼) from his speech.
I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard work¡ªthat your ticket to success is through pop music or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you¡¯re not going to be any of those things.
But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won¡¯t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem rather important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.
That¡¯s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who¡¯ve had the most failures (the opposite of success). JK Rowling¡¯s first Harry Potter book was turned down 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots (ͶÀº) during his career. But he once said, ¡°I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.¡±
These people succeeded because they understand that you can¡¯t let your failures beat you¡ªyou have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.
No one¡¯s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work.
Don¡¯t be afraid to ask questions. Don¡¯t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn¡¯t a sign of weakness; it¡¯s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to tell when you don¡¯t know something, and to learn something new.
And even when you¡¯re struggling(·Ü¶·), even when you¡¯re discouraged (йÆø), and you feel other people have given up on you¡ªdon¡¯t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.
¡¾Ð¡Ìâ1¡¿Why does Barack Obama mention (Ìáµ½) JK Rowling and Michael Jordan in the third paragraph?

A£®To compare these two famous persons.
B£®To explain that the more failures he has, the more successful he is.
C£®If you want to be successful, you should fail first.
D£®To show that failure is the mother of success.
¡¾Ð¡Ìâ2¡¿ Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A£®No one can be successful without working hard.
B£®Failure can be good if you treat it in a right way.
C£®Those who believe in themselves shouldn¡¯t ask others for help.
D£®One should try his best to make his dream come true.
¡¾Ð¡Ìâ3¡¿Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined sentence?
A£®One shouldn¡¯t ask questions because it is a sign of strength.
B£®One should believe in himself though he will face much difficulty.
C£®One doesn¡¯t have to work hard when he has failed several times.
D£®One doesn¡¯t have to ask for help because it is a sign of weakness.

A new report says more and more international students are attending colleges and universities in the United States. It also notes a large increase in the number of international students from China.
These findings are from the latest Open Doors Report. The report documents the record number of international students in the United States during 2012, 2013 school year. It says more than seven hundred sixty-four thousand four-hundred such students were attending American colleges and universities during the last two years. That represents an increase of almost six percent than one year earlier.
On the other hand, the number of Americans studying overseas (º£Íâ) increased by one percent, which reached nineteen thousand this year.
The report says one hundred ninety-four thousand students at American colleges and universities were from
China. That is an increase of more than twenty-three percent over the year before. Peggy Blumenthal, an expert(ר¼Ò) of international education, described the effect of the increase in Chinese students.
"Now they have been coming for some time. But this year was the highest level ever." She says many Chinese families are able to pay for the highest-quality education for their children. The children mainly choose to study in America.
"We know many of them have enough income to be able to afford to send them anywhere in the world that they want to go. And for the most part, looking around the world, Chinese students still prefer to come to the United States as their choice."
Chinese students are not the only ones who want to attend American colleges and universities. After China, India sends the second largest number of students to the United States for higher education. India has about one hundred thousand students in American schools. South Korea is third with about seventy two thousand students.
Why do so many foreign students study in the United States? Peggy Blumenthal provides one reason.
"The advantage America has is that we have a huge system and a very perfect system. So there are over four thousand universities and colleges in the United States. Among them are some top ones in the world, and what that tells us is there is still a lot of room to host international students."
Foreign students represent less than four percent of the total student population in American higher education. And from Learning English, that's the VOA Special English Education Report. I'm Bob Doughty. Thanks for listening.

Good writing starts with good ideas. If you write about things that you care about, you will write better. If you write about things that you don¡¯t care about, you¡¯ll be bored and your paper will not have many good ideas.
Once you have a good idea, the next step is organization. Think through your paper before you start. Write an outline. You need to know what your main points are before you start your first paragraph (¶ÎÂä). Use 2-4 main points, one paragraph each.
In your central paragraphs, be concise (¼ò¶ÌµÄ) and specific £¨¾ßÌåµÄ£©. Give examples with details£¨Ï¸½Ú£©, not just general ideas. If you can say the same thing with fewer words, do it! Don¡¯t use big words.
When you finish writing, look at your outline again. Did you really follow it or did it change as you wrote? Many times you find different ideas as you write. Look at your central paragraphs. What are their main ideas now? Are these ideas in the introduction? I often write the introduction again to fit the paper after I finish writing.
¡¾Ð¡Ìâ1¡¿ What is the 1st step for a good writing?

A teacher let her class play a game. The teacher told each child to bring a bag with some potatoes. Each potato would be given a name of a person that the child hated, so the number of potatoes in his/her bag would depend on the number of people the child hated. Some children had two potatoes, some had three and others had up to five potatoes. The teacher then told the children to carry the bag wherever they went for a week. After a week, the teacher asked, ¡±How did you feel?¡± The children started complaining about the unpleasant smell coming from the rotten potatoes when they had to carry the heavy and smelly potatoes everywhere they went.
Then the teacher said,¡± This is the same when you carry your hate for somebody inside your heart. The smell of hate will pollute your heart and you will carry it with you wherever you go. I often hear some students say English is difficult, and it gives them a headache. So they can't learn it well. But English is very easy for me. I'm good at it. I'm very glad to tell you something about how I study English.
First, I think an interest in English is very important. When I was in Grade One, we had a new subject-English. It was fresh for me. I was interested in it, so I worked hard at it. Soon we had an English exam and I got a very good mark. How happy I was! After that, I learned English harder and harder. Our English teacher often teaches us English songs, the songs sound nice. I often think how interesting English is!
Second, I think English is a foreign language. I should learn it well in the following ways: Listen to the teacher carefully, speak bravely, read aloud and have a good vocabulary. Then practice again and again, never be tired. And I also have a good habit: Asking whenever(²»ÂÛºÎʱ)I have a question, I must make it clear by asking our English teacher. How happy I am when I understand!
Besides this, I often read English stories, jokes and easy novels. From these I know English is not only interesting, but also useful. They help me understand a lot of things. So to do more reading is an important way to learn English well.
And I also do some exercises from our class magazines, and I often write English diaries. English has become a close friend of mine.
Now I have learned English for more than two years. I always keep the first position in our school. From these words, I hope every student can learn English well.

Healthy eating doesn't just mean what you eat, but how you eat. Here is some advice on healthy eating.
Eat with others. It can help you to see others' healthy eating habits. If you usually eat with your parents, you will find that the food you eat is more delicious.
Listen to your body. Ask yourself if you are really hungry. Have a glass of water to see if you are thirsty-sometimes you are just thirsty, you need no food. Stop eating before you feel full.
Eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. After you don't eat for the past ten hours, your body needs food to get you going. You will be smarter after eating breakfast.
Eat healthy snacks like fruits, yogurt or cheese. We all need snacks sometimes. In fact, it's a good idea to eat two healthy snacks between your three meals This doesn't mean that you can eat a bag of chips instead of a meal
Don't eat dinner late. With our busy life, we always put off eating dinner until the last minute. Try to eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This will give your body a chance to digest(Ïû»¯)most of the food before you rest for the next 8-10 hours.
