题目内容

Jim is a boy who thinks a lot and learns a lot. One day when he was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped. He saw a group of elephants and these big animals had a rope around their front     . The rope was very      , so the elephants could break it easily. But to his surprise,      did not.
Jim saw a trainer near the elephants. Then he walked over and asked him   . “Well,” the trainer said, “When they were very young and much smaller , we used the same       ropes to tie around their legs and, at that age, they were sure they      hold(约束)them. As they get bigger and bigger, thy still believe the ropes can hold them, so they     try to get away.”
Jim thought a lot     that. These animals could break their ropes at any time, but because they       they couldn’t, they didn’t give it a try.
Like the       many of us believe that we can’t do something in our life, just because we didn’t do it successfully in the past.

As a volunteer teacher, I traveled a long way to a small village school in Long Zhou, Guangxi. On my way there, I thought about the village, the school, and the children there. However, my heart sank when I arrived there. It wasn’t what I expected. It didn’t look like a school at all! The school had only three rooms, one for Grades 1, 2, and 3, and the other for Grades 4, 5 and 6. There was a third one for me.
The children welcomed me warmly on my first day. They asked me a lot of questions, and I told them stories about myself and my life in Shanghai. The next day, I gave them a test to find out their level. To my surprise, though the test was very easy, over half of the students failed it, yet they all wanted to learn new things. I knew they needed me.
I was busy preparing lessons, reading test papers every night. I enjoyed teaching these lovely and hard-working children, and I could see that they were making progress with my help. I have also learned a lot from them. I understand their lives better, and we are now good friends.
I have worked in Long Zhou for a year now. I’m very happy, and the experience has been very useful for me. I love the small village and the children. In fact, I would like to continue working here.

Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. So, I really doubted whether there was any love between my parents. Every day they were working hard to pay for my high school. They didn’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books and saw on TV, and they certainly didn’t send flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day (情人节).
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (被子). I asked her if there was any love between her and my dad. She stopped and raised her head in surprise. Then she went on with her work without saying anything. I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her feelings. But after a few minutes she said, “Look at this thread (线). Sometimes it appears, but most of the time it disappears in the quilt. If life is a quilt, then love is the thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or at any time, but it’s really there, and makes the quilt long-lasting.” I listened carefully but I didn’t understand her until the next spring.
My mother suddenly got seriously ill and had to stay in hospital for about a month. Every morning and evening after she returned from the hospital, my father helped her walk slowly along our country road. There were many beautiful flowers, green grass and trees, and the sun gently shone through the leaves. All of this made the most beautiful picture in the world. Reading their eyes, I knew they love each other deeply. From this experience, I realized that love is just a thread in the quilt of our lives. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

American people like to say “Thank you” when others help them or say something kind to them. People of many other countries do so, too. It is a very good habit.
You should say “Thank you” when someone passes you the salt on the table, when someone walking before you keeps the door open for you, when someone says you have done your work well, or you have bought a nice thing, or your city is very beautiful. “Thank you” is used not only between friends, but also between parents and children, brother and sisters, husbands and wives.
“Excuse me” is another short sentence they use. When you hear someone say so behind you, you know that someone wants to walk past you.
It is not polite to break others while they are talking. If you want to speak to one of them, say “Excuse me” first, and then begin talking. You should also do so when you want to cough(咳嗽) or make any noise before others.

There are many things we need to know that we do not learn at school. For example, if we want to use our money wisely(智慧地), we need to shop carefully. We need to know how to compare the prices of the thing in different shops. We need to be able to compare the quality of different brands(品牌). We need to know how to make a choice(选择) when we shop.
Knowing how to make such choices is a “life skill”, and we need these skills if we want to live useful and happy lives.
Some of these choices are small. For example, will I take an apple for lunch or a pear? Will I go to school by bus or on foot? Will I wear the red T-shirt or the blue one to the movies? Other choices are more important. For example, will I eat healthy food for lunch or will I eat junk food because it is nicer? Will I work hard in all my classes or will I only work hard in the classes I enjoy? We make choices like this every day.
We have to realize that the choices we make can affect(影响) the rest of our lives. Just as importantly, our choices can also affect other people. The next time you decide to waste time in class, play a joke on someone or talk loudly at the movies, think about this: Who else does your choice affect?
