A Chinese film directed by Zhang Yimou who was born on November 14, 1951 in Xi’an Shanxi Province, won the Golden Lion Prize for the best movie at the 56th Venice Film Festival. Zhang said it was the most satisfying film he has ever directed.

This is the third time that Zhang has won a prize at the Venice Film Festival. His Raised the Red Lantern won the Silver Lion Prize in 1991. One year later, he won the Golden Lion Prize for the film The Story of Qiuju.

Zhang has won other prizes at international film festival. For example, he was awarded the Golden Bear Prize for his film Red Sorghum at the 38th Berlin International Movie Festival in 1988.
