While there is no widely accepted definition of MOOCs, their key features are open access:they are currently free to participants, no entry qualifications are required, they support an unlimited number of participants and as yet, very few include any form of accreditation(认证).

Currently offered by some famous universities, MOOCs are attractive to people who do not have the financial resources to meet the growing costs of university education, or who do not have formal qualifications. They also allow participants to study at their own pace.

The potential for MOOCs to deliver education is obviously vast-they could be considered as a huge step forwards in widening participation. They also have the potential to provide a unique window on universities that offer popular and valuable courses, they may attract some participants to register for formal fee-paying programmes at the same or other universities and are likely to promote new ways of on-line education.

However, it is still very early days for MOOCs.The quality of the education provision is highly variable, with many courses offering only recordings of lectures, and delivery is particularly difficult in some special fields that require practical classes, research projects or extensive library access.Besides, wider engagement with participants requires very considerable resource.Even limited feedback or examination becomes a major task if there are several thousand students in the class.

Considering the challenges, some people argue MOOCs will soon evaporate(蒸发).But they certainly provide good opportunity for widening higher education, are a means of raising awareness of universities to audiences of tens or hundreds of thousands, and are well worthy of serious consideration.(271 words)

C.Do you think people should send an SOS while they are in danger?

D.How to make a fire in the wild?

E.How to set a trap to hunt animals?

F.How to build a shelter in the wild?

1.________

Answer:If you are in a desert environment, try to build an underground shade shelter to avoid prolonged sun exposure, obviously only for hot climates. So you can be more comfortable in cooler temperatures to avoid sweating. If your environment is damp, use branches laid and criss-crossed on top of one another to create a solid and dry foundation for an open bed pad.Raise the foundation above ground level as much as possible.

2.________

Answer:Yes, I think so.For example, if you think the best survival course of action is to look for help and civilization, don't wait 4 or 5 days before you come to this conclusion.Take action on the 1st or 2nd day if possible while you still have strength and endurance working for you.

3.________

Answer:Use dry wood and sticks to start your fire.Fire is started by using three kinds of wood:tinder, kindling, and fuel.Tinder is any kind of flammable wood shavings, usually light and wispy. You can take two pieces of dry wood, sharpen one of them and use it to drill into the other piece.Place any highly flammable objects you can find next to the drill bit.The moment the flammable object catches a spark, use a rock to swiftly tip the object onto a nest of leaves and little branches.

4.________

Answer:Get an ordinary block of wood and hit it with a rock repeatedly until the wood sharpens. In this case, use the rock as your sharpener. You could also take a rock and break off some of the edges and then use another rock and some water like a wet stone and sharpen. In an ideal situation, obsidian stone would be used for its infamous sharpness.

5.________

Answer:Use two more sticks to hold up a “teepee”, similar to your shelter.Place an item of your choice you think an animal will come after, if you're lucky, the animal will be trapped.Dig a hole in the ground about 2m-3m deep and 1m-2m across.Take two thin branches and place them criss-crossed across the hole.Cover it with leaves and put something the animals like to eat.You can also put a few wooden spikes sharpened by your knife at the bottom.Don't forget to build a ladder or you might not be able to climb out of the hole.

New research says 35 percent of child deaths worldwide are caused by hunger. The research comes from poor or middle-income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Robert Black from the' Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, is the lead writer of the research. He says more than 3.5 million mothers and children under five die in poor countries each year because of hunger.

He says more than two million children die from underdevelopment, either before or after birth.Millions of, others who survive face a lifetime of disabilities or early death and the effects are not just physical.Poor mental development also results from hunger as children grow. Then the cycle of poverty and hunger often continues for their children.

Doctor Black says hungry children are also more likely to have conditions like high blood pressure and heart disease as adults. He says the studies show that food programs need to place the greatest importance on the first two years of life.Hungry children can suffer their whole life damage from age two.

It is high time their diets were improved.Diets should include foods rich in vitamin A and other useful vitamins and minerals. The researchers say early help such as this could reduce child deaths by 25%.

This research has also faced some criticism.A medical aid group says the researchers underestimate(低估)the number of child deaths due to hunger. The researchers say there are findings that support this treatment but more studies are needed to compare it to hospital care.

In both China and the West, at this time of the year, we must endure the cold, the wind and the snow of wintertime. How good it is then that we have festivals to keep our spirits up and hearts warm!

Spring Festival in China and Christmas in foreign countries are times for families and friends to get together, exchange gifts and have a big dinner.

Although the two holidays are different-one is to celebrate Jesus Christ's birth, while the other is celebrated because of thousands of years of Chinese folk traditions – Christmas and Spring Festival still have things in common.

In both, eating is a big part of the holiday celebration. In China we eat dumpling and niangao-cakes made of sticky rice- while Westerners sit down to a roast turkey or ham, with vegetables, apple-sauce and a plum(干果)pudding.

Gifts are another key element in both celebrations. In the West, families gather round the Christmas tree on Christmas morning and open their presents.Gifts range from the small-a box of chocolates-to the large.Children especially look forward to a big present, say a new bike or computer.Similarly, in China children receive gift money in red envelopes from their elders.

With the world becoming more connected, Spring Festival and Christmas have crossed cultural borders. It is not unusual in China to see Christmas trees and Father Christmas figures around the end of December.

And Chinese living abroad have made Spring Festival a special cultural event in many foreign countries. In some US cities, especially those with large Chinese neighborhoods, non-Asian adults and kids join in the fun.“ I've been celebrating Chinese New Year for a really long time, and it's a great cultural festival for the community, ” said Leslie Swartz, who works at the city's Children's Museum in Boston.“Everyone goes to Chinatown. There are lion dances and firecrackers. It's very lively.Schools also celebrate Chinese New Year.” Swartz said.

Swartz has a 13-year-old adopted Chinese daughter, Mei.They celebrate at home, too, decorating the house and eating special foods. They make traditional Chinese New Year's fruit trays(拼盘).They also write good luck messages on red paper, called spring couplets(对联), and hang them by the doors at home.
