Congratulations! You are Times person of the year!

Previous winners have included Adolf Hitler, Bill Gates and Ayatollah Khomeini. This year it is you.

Time magazine has named”You”as its”Person of the Year”in recognition of the way that ordinary internet users have revolutionized the media through blogs, file-sharing and websites such as Wikipedia, YouTube and MySpace. The magazine designed special cover——a white keyboard with a mirror for a computer screen where buyers can see their reflection——for the issue, reflecting the importance of user-generated(使用者自创)Internet content as a driving force in the modern world.

User-generated content on websites such as You Tube has proved the latest twist(转折)in the Internet revolution. You Tube has attracted millions of users and earned its founders $1.65 billion when it was bought by Google earlier this year.

Normally, the magazine describes its person of the year not necessarily as an honor, but as”the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or for ill, and represented what was important about the year”.Mr.Stengel said in an interview that to select the”Person of the Year”is to look for someone who’s a symbol.

The magazine did cite(提名)26”People Who Mattered”, from North Korean leader Kim Jong II to Pope Benedict XVI(教皇本笃十六世)to the troika(三人组合)of President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in the past. And in 2005, the winners were Bill and Melinda Gates and rock star Bono, who were cited for their charitable(慈善的)work aimed at reducing global poverty and improving world health. It was not the first time that the magazine went away from naming an actual person for its”Person of the Year”.In 1966, the 25-and-under generation was cited; in 1975, American women were named; and in 1982, the computer was chosen.

It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man.College, career, and life itself got in the way.In fact, Jack moved clear across the country for his dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son.He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.

Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr.Belser died last night. The funeral(葬礼)is Wednesday.”Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.

  “Jack, did you hear me?”

“Oh, sorry, Mom.Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him.I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said.

“Well, he didn’t forget you.Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisce(回忆)about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence’ as he put it,” Mom told him.

“I loved that old house he lived in,” Jack said.

“You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr.Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence in your life,” she said.

“He’s the one who taught me carpentry.I wouldn’t be in this business if it weren’t for him.He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important…Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral,” Jack said.

Busy as he was, he kept his word.Jack caught the next flight to his hometown.Mr.Belser’s funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.

The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered.Every step held memories.Every picture, every piece of furniture…Jack stopped suddenly.

“What’s wrong, Jack?” his Mom asked.

“The box is gone,” he said.

  “What box?” Mom asked.

“There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk.I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most’,” Jack said.

It was gone.Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box.He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.

“Now, I’ll never know what was so valuable to him,” Jack said sadly.

Returning to his office the next day, he found a package on his desk. The return address caught his attention.

  “Mr.Harold Belser” it read.

Jack tore open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope.Jack’s hands shook as he read the note inside.

“Upon my death, please give this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It’s the thing I valued most in my life.” A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, and tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.Running his fingers slowly over the fine cover, he opened it.

Inside he found these words carved:“Jack, Thanks for your time!Harold Belser.”

“Oh, My God!This is the thing he valued most…”

The people in ancient Egypt had a writing system called hieroglyphics(象形文字),which was a type of picture writing. For a long time, no one was able to understand this language. However, the discovery of the Rosetta Stone(罗赛达碑)has helped scientists to understand this language.

The Rosetta Stone is a large stone on which there are three written messages. The first language is hieroglyphics, the second is demotic, the common language of ancient Egypt, and the third is Greek. It concluded that this stone probably contained the same message but in three different languages.A French man, Francois Champollion, used his knowledge of Greek and his limited knowledge of hieroglyphics to translate the message. The discovery and translation of the Rosetta Stone allowed the translation of other messages in hieroglyphics and gave the world more insight into ancient Egypt.

The wind cause waves on the surface of the ocean and lakes. The wind transfers some of its energy to the water, through friction between the air molecules and the water molecules.Stronger winds cause larger waves like storm surges. You can make your own miniature waves by blowing across the surface of a pan of water.

Waves of water do not move horizontally(水平地), they only move up and down(a wave does not represent a flow of water). You can see a demonstration of this by watching a floating buoy(浮标)bob up and down with a wave; it does not, however, move horizontally with the wave.

Tsunamis sometimes called tidal waves are different from surface waves; they are usually caused by underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides.

What cause the tides?Tides are periodic rises and falls of large bodies of water.Tides are caused by the gravitational interaction between the Earth and the Moon. The gravitational attraction of the Moon causes the oceans to bulge(凸出)out in the direction of the Moon.Another bulge occurs on the opposite side, since the Earth is also being pulled toward the Moon and away from the water on the far side.Since the Earth is rotating(旋转)while this is happening, two tides occur each day.Isaac Newton was the first person to explain tides scientifically.

Spring tides are especially strong tides. They do not have anything to do with the season Spring. They occur when the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon are in a line. The gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun both contribute to the tides.Spring tides occur during the full moon and the new moon.

Neap tides are especially weak tides. They occur when the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun are perpendicular(垂直的)to one another(with respect to the Earth).Neap tides occur during quarter moons.

In my opinion, between persons of equal income, there is no social difference except that of achievements and value.Money is nothing.Character, behavior and ability are everything. There would be great people and ordinary people and little people, but the great would always be those who had done great things, and never the fools whose mothers had cared for them too much and whose fathers had left them a hundred thousand dollars a year; and the little people would be persons of small minds and mean characters, and not poor persons who had never had a chance. That is why fools are always favor of inequality of income(their only chance of being well-known), and the really great in favor of equality.

As for Americans, being hardworking, thrift(节俭), and ambition are positive values. They encourage their children to be competitive and to get ahead, to make money and to get possession. In games and in business alike, the aim is to win the game, the award, the contract. They go in for labor-saving devices, new inventions, speed and shortcuts. They think every young couple should set up a home of their own, and they pity the couple who must share their home with their parents, or get along with other relatives.Actually, of course, not all Americans hold all these values, and those who do may hold others, and at times contradictory(矛盾的)values may affect their ways of behaving. In the main, however, the collective(集体的)expectation of their society is that these are desirable(值得做的)goals, and each person, whatever his personal opinion may be, is under considerable and similar pressure.

It is a great truth because once we truly understand and accept it, then life is no longer difficult.

Most do not fully see this truth.Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy.It seems to them that difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.

What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one.Problems, depending on their nature, cause in us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.

Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning.

Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said,“Those things that hurt, instruct.”It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.

Teenager Jessica Riley was surfing alone at Flagler Beach, in Florida, in the USA when she was attacked by what is believed to be a 9–foot bull shark. She narrowly escaped injury when the shark took a huge bite out of her board.

She told Florida’s WFTV that she was lying on her board and heard a splash. She said something told her to take her right hand out of the water just before the shark came up underneath the board, emerged from the water and bit into the board about half way down its length.

“The whole thing was like out of jaws,”she said,“where you see the eyeballs and then they turn white and the teeth they have were, like, crooked. As soon as it bit the board I fell in onto the shark. The shark started to thrash(逆行)and then I heard a popping sound and I thought ‘Oh not!Have I lost a leg or an arm?’”
