Patti discovered the meaning of running when she was 23. At that time she was smoking two packs of cigarettes a day and had
1
over 50 pounds. “I decided to
2
,” she says. She took a clock and started
3
what she did every day, and then she
4
an hour a day as a “be nice to Patti” hour. “I started having bubble(泡沫)baths with a candle
5
, because Cosmopolitan Magazine
6
that this would be good for me. But I got
7
of that soon,” Patti remembers. She wanted to do something really pleasant. She found that the
8
times in her life were times when she was physically active. So she took up
9
.
She decided to start
10
the next day. She ran for an hour,
11
a total of 7 miles on her first run. “I couldn’t walk for 2 weeks
12
I felt painful all over!” Patti recalls. “But I felt so wonderful!” Patti wasn’t crazy about running yet, but she was in
13
with the after effects of it.
Within seven months, Patti had run her first marathon, qualified for the Boston Marathon, and placed 25th in the world for
14
distance runners. Over the next years, she
15
records and set standards for women in the sport. She was the first American woman to run a marathon
16
than 2 hours 30 minutes, and then broke another two records
17
an 8-month period.
Patti believes that, if we can
18
standards for ourselves, we can pull ourselves out of the most difficult
19
and come out on top. “Everybody has to be a/an
20
and everybody has that in them.”

There was once a farmer who had a fine olive orchard(橄榄园). He was very hardworking, and the
1
always prospered(繁荣)under his care. But he knew that his three
2
looked down upon the farm work, and were eager to make wealth.
When the farmer was
3
and felt that he would die, he
4
the three sons to him and said, “My sons, there is a pot of gold
5
in the olive orchard. Dig for it, if you wish it.”
The sons tried to
6
him to tell them in what part of the orchard the
7
was hidden, but he would tell them nothing more.
After the farmer was
8
, the sons went to work to find the pot of gold; since they did not
9
where the hiding-place was, they agreed to begin in a line, at one
10
of the orchard, and to dig until one of them should find the money.
They
11
until they had turned up the
12
from one end of the orchard to the other,
13
the tree-roots and between them.
14
no pot of gold was to be found. It seemed as if someone must have stolen it, or as if the farmer had been wandering in his wits. The three sons were bitterly
15
to have all their work for nothing.
The next olive
16
, the olive trees in the orchard bore(结果实)more fruit than they had
17
given; when it was
18
, it gave the sons a whole pot of gold.
And when they saw how much money had
19
the orchard, they suddenly understood what the wise father had
20
when he said, “There is gold hidden in the orchard. Dig for it, if you wish it.”

The story happened on a hot heavy rainy day.
After class, I took a few bottles to go and
1
some water from the water room. Oh! There were so many people! I had to wait
2
the rain. My hair didn't get wet because I wore a hat, but my clothes

When at last it was my

towards me. He
6
two umbrellas in his hand. He shouted hello and as he came
7
, I recognized that it was Tom.
He

my classmate for nearly three years, but we never
9
more than ten sentences. He was silent, but I liked talking. We were quite
10
people and had nothing in common. I didn't
11
him and even didn't want to see him.
"Hey! What's wrong?" His words
12
me out of my thought. "I saw you
13
in the rain, so I brought you this umbrella. But it seems a little
14
, your clothes are already wet,"
On hearing this, I was so
15
that I couldn't say a single word.
"Don't just stand there. Let's go!" He said and held the umbrella for me. We walked towards
16
and this time we talked
17
.
"I know you don't like me, but I want to
18
with you." he said, "You may think I am silent, but it is because I can't find the right
19
to say."
The rain finally stopped and we saw a rainbow in the blue sky. I said to myself, "It is wrong to
20
someone only by his appearance.

I am my mother’s third child. When I was born, her doctor gently explained to my mother that my left arm was

My mother had to work to support our family. There were five girls in our family and we all had to

“You get back to peel those potatoes, and don’t ever use that as a(n)

Of course I could peel potatoes with my good hand while holding them down with my other arm. There was always a

Once in the second grade, our teacher had each of us race across the monkey bars (高低杠). When it was my turn, I

After work the next afternoon, Mom took me to the school play-ground.
“Now, pull up with your right arm,” she advised. She stood by as I practiced, and she

me when I made progress.
I’11 never forget the
13
time I was crossing the bars. The kids were standing there with their mouths open.
It was the way with everything. When I
14
I can’t handle (处理) things, I see Mom’s smile again. She had the heart to
15
anything. And she taught me I could, too.

My Fellow Americans,
I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease (老年痴呆症).
Upon learning this news, Nancy & I had to decide whether as private citizens we would
1
this a private matter or we would make this news known in a
2
way.
In the past Nancy suffered from breast cancer
3
I had my cancer surgeries (外科手术). We found that after we told it to the public, we were able to
4
public awareness(意识). We were happy that
5
many more people went to have a test. They were treated in early stages and able to
6
to normal, healthy lives.
So now, we feel it is
7
to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater
8
of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clearer understanding of the individuals and families who are
9
by it.
At the moment I feel just fine. I’d
10
to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have
11
done. I will continue to share
12
journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch
13
my friends and supporters.
Unfortunately, as Alzheimer’s Disease
14
, the family often suffers a lot. I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this
15
experience. When the time comes I am confident that with your help she will
16
it with faith and courage.
At last, let me thank you, the American people for giving me the great honor of
17
me to serve as your President. When the Lord calls me home,
18
that may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and endless optimism (乐观) for its future.
I now begin this
19
that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright
20
ahead.
Thank you my friends. May God always bless you.
Sincerely,
Ronald Reagan

In a small open courtyard, outside a school building, there were flowers here and there. In the sunshine, a
1
was lying on the grass, reading a book with
2
concentration. Near her, another child was carefully watering the flowers, while a third was
3
with his back against a tree and had a
4
on his knees. He appeared to be drawing or writing something on it. He was
5
in his task, like the first child.
6
the building, there were pleasant carpeted areas. Many children were busy with their tasks in a variety of
7
, while teachers wandered among them, talking to them,
8
them, and encouraging their efforts.
9
I watched this scene on a morning in May years ago, it
10
to me that a visitor here would
11
have thought be had entered a formal school. He would have been even more
12
if he had been told that the children he was
13
came from different kinds of academic levels.
That
14
has been staying with me ever since. I have been
15
about some problems. Why in many schools are our children
16
asked to acquire skills in a way
17
from a real-life context(情境)? Why does a
18
school child so often become a defeated school failure?
Developmental psychologist Margaret Donald once said,”
19
of the intellectual framework (知识框架) on which we
20
our teaching is misleading.” In my opinion, a child learns everything in human situation. And if every child could learn in the same way as the children in the school I visited, they would develop better.

Once upon a time, bee-keepers killed their bees every autumn. Why, you
1
ask. Well, the answer is this. To get some
2
, bee-keepers and farmers used to
3
small wooden boxes in a corner of the farmyard. Bees would come and
4
the box with honeycomb.
5
, there was no way of getting the honey out
6
killing the bees. So they used to burn a chemical
7
the box in order to kill the bees and then take the honey.
Now, bee-keepers
8
beehives to collect honey. In the beehive there are a number of wooden
9
with spaces between them
10
can be lifted out. In later summer, the squares, which are now
11
of honeycomb are lifted out. The squares are put in
12
special machine and turned round and round very fast for several minutes. Turning the squares round and round
13
this
14
out the honey. Then the honey is collected and
15
jars. After that the empty squares are returned to the hive for the bees to fill with honey the following year.

As a kid, I spent my summers with my grandparents in Texas. And every few summers, we’d
1
the caravan (旅游团队), a group of Airstream trailer owners who
2
together around the U.S. and Canada.
I loved and worshipped my grandparents and I really looked
3
to these travels. On one particular
4
,I was about 10 years old. I was rolling around in the backseat. My grandfather was
5
. And my grandmother had the passenger seat. She smoked throughout these trips, and I hated the
6
.
At that age, I’d take any excuse to make estimates(估计) and do minor
7
.At any rate, I decided to do the math for my
8
. I estimated the number of cigarettes per days, estimated the number of
9
per cigarette and so on. When I was satisfied that I’d come up with a reasonable number, I poked my head into the
10
of the car, tapped my grandmother
11
the shoulder, and proudly proclaimed, “At two minutes per puff, you've taken nine years off your
12
!” Because the ad said, every puff of a cigarette takes some number of minutes
13
smoker’s life.
I expected to be applauded for my
14
and arithmetic skills. That’s not what happened.
15
, my grandmother burst into
16
. I sat in the backseat and did not know what to do. My grandfather was a highly intelligent,
17
man. He had never said a harsh word to me. He pulled
18
onto the shoulder of the highway. He stopped and got out of the car,
19
me, and after a bit of silence,he gently and
20
said, “Jeff, one day you’11 understand that it’s harder to be kind than clever.”

Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A,B,C and D. Fill in each blank with a word or phrase that best fits the context.
Being alone in outer space can be
1
. That is one reason why astronauts on solo(单独的) space flights were given plenty of work to keep them
2
. They were also in constant communication with people on the earth.
3
, being with people from whom you cannot get away might be even harder than being alone. This is what happens on long submarine(潜水艇) voyages. It will also happen on
4
space flights in the future. Will there be special problems of adjustment under such conditions?
Scientists have studied the reactions of men to one another during long submarine voyages. They have also found that the longer the voyage lasts, the more serious the problem of
5
is. When men are
6
together for a long period, they begin to feel
7
. Everyone has little habits of speaking and behaving that are ordinarily acceptable. In the limited space over a long period of time, however, these little habits may become very
8
.
Apparently, although no one wants to be
9
all the time, everyone needs some degree of privacy. When people are enclosed together, they are in what is called stress situation. That means that they are under an unusual amount of
10
or stress.
People who are well-adjusted are able to
11
stress situations better than others. That is one reason why so much care is taken in
12
our astronauts. These men undergo a long period of testing and training. One of the things tested is their behavior under stress, and thus they can do better than ordinary people.
