Reginald Andrews had been out of work for more than a year. This

father of five children had deeply known his
2
of family heartaches.A few years earlier, his sister Kedra had been shot in the
3
by a young man who robbed the place where she was working. The young man was caught, but Kedra

5
, Mr.Andrews cared about blind people.
On December 20, 2001, Mr.Andrews was waiting for a train in New York City. The train pulled into the station and stopped.Andrews was getting ready to get
6
the train when something
7
happened. An old blind man, who had
8
the space between two carriages for a door while
9
his way with a stick, suddenly fell
10
the train.Seeing this, Andrews quickly jumped down to the tracks and
11
the blind man to safety.He

all the people on the spot with his courage. The news rapidly
13
all over the country.Messages began to pour in.Some people
14
sent money and food to Andrews.
Andrews had been at the station
15
he was returning from a job talk.He probably would have been hired, and the public praise made it a
16
thing.
Andrews, however, received
17
attention from the public after about a week of newspaper stories and active
18
to his family.Although most people supposed that the story had come to a happy end, it didn’t quite happen that way.Andrews
19
start his new job, but the factory moved to New Jersey.Andrews didn’t have any way to get to work, so he had to leave. It wasn’t long before he was
20
to job hunting again.Few newspapers, however, would tell their readers what happened to Mr.Andrews after he became a hero.

In the dining room of my grandfather’s house stood a massive grandfather clock. Meals in that dining room were a
1
for four generations to become one. The table was always
2
with food from wonderful family recipes(食谱)all containing
3
as the main ingredient(成分). And always that grandfather clock stood like a trusted old family
4
, sharing our happiness.
As I was a child, the old clock

how at different times of the day, that clock would strike with a wonderful

. Year after year, the clock struck a part of my
8
a part of my heart.
Even more wonderful to me was what my grandfather did each day. He
9
wound that clock with a special and magic key, which

11
. When we grandkids got a little older, he showed us how to
12
the clock.
Several days after my grandfather died, I entered the dining room, with tears flowing
13
. The clock stood desertedly
14
, seeming smaller and not as magnificent as before. I couldn’t
15
to look at it.
Years later, my grandmother gave me the clock and the key. The old house was quiet. I opened the clock door with my shaking hand. Then
16
, reverently(虔诚地), I entered the key and wound the clock. It sprang to
17
. Tick – tock , tick – tock, life and chimes were
18
into the dining room, into house and into my
19
. In the movement of the hands of the clock, my grandfather

A large cat arrived at a farm where many mice lived. None of them dared go outside for fear of being
1
by the cat.
The mice decided to hold a
2
to find a way of stopping themselves from being in
3
. One day, when the cat was out, mice of all ages
4
into the meeting room.
“Let’s build a big trap,” one mouse
5
. When this idea was
6
, another said, “What about poisoning(毒死) her?” But
7
knew where to buy the poison. One young mouse, whose mother had become the cat’s food,
8
said, “Let’s cut her teeth, so she can do no more harm.” But the meeting did not accept his
9
.
At last, one mouse,
10
than the rest, jumped onto a table. Waving a bell, he called for
11
, “Be quiet! We’11 tie this bell to the cat’s tail, so we’11 always know
12
she is! We’11 have
13
to escape, and the slower and weaker mice will hear her coming and be able to
14
!” Hearing the words, everyone got
15
and they congratulated him on his good idea.
“We’11 tie it so tightly that it will never
16
!”
“She’11 never be able to walk
17
again! Why, the other day, she suddenly appeared right in front of me! Just imagine…”
However, the wise mouse said, “We must
18
who is going to tie it on her tail.” There was not a sound in the room. Nobody was
19
enough to put the plan into action. The meeting ended without any decision being made.
It’s often very
20
to have bright ideas, but putting them into practice is a more difficult matter.

The world always makes way for the dreamer.
When I was twelve years old, my father took me to see Zig Zigler. I remember sitting in that dark hall listening to Mr. Zigler

10
I would risk everything for a dream.
I made my

a regional sales meeting. The vice-president of our company delivered a
13
that changed my life. He asked us, “If a god would offer you three wishes, what would they be?” After giving us a
14
to write down the three wishes, he then asked us, “Why do you need a
15

16
I had accomplished in the past had prepared me for this moment. I was ready and didn’t need a god’s help to become a motivational speaker. A motivational speaker was

Having made that decision, I was immediately

engagements with new customers. I discovered the incredible power of dreams.

Wishing to encourage her young son's progress on the piano, a mother took the small boy to a Paderewski concert. After they were seated, the mother saw a friend in the audience and walked
1
the aisle(通道)to greet her.
2
the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and

explored his way through a door
4
"NO ADMITTANCE."
5
the house’s lights dimmed and the
6
was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that her son was
7
. Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused
8
the impressive Steinway on stage.In
9
, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the keyboard, innocently(纯洁地)picking out "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star."
At that moment, the great piano master
10
his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in the boy's ear, "Don't
11
." "Keep playing." Then leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left
12
and began filling in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached around to the
13
side of the child and he
14
a running obbligato(伴奏).Together, the
15
master and the young novice(新手)transformed a
16
situation into a wonderfully creative
17
. The audience was mesmerized(迷倒).
That's the way it is with God.
18
we can finish on our own is hardly noteworthy. We try our best, but the
19
aren't exactly flowing music. But
20
the hand of the Master, our life's work truly can be beautiful.

John wanted a bike. He had asked his parents for the

? He thought about this as he walked home.
3
many people wanted to ask boys to work for them. Maybe he could

Children and young people tend to have certain role models – people they want to be like when they grow
1
. Though
2
children would have wished to copy their mother, father or a (n)
3
relative, gradually these role models are thought of as famous people or popular
4
. People have different opinions about
5
popular stars or other famous people are good role models for children. Charming models, such as Katie Price, are often admired and
6
by young girls. This is the biggest worry of parents and teachers. They wish to
7
the concept that success is achieved through hard work and
8
rather than an attractive looking.
Most people tend to grow up to be those who are
9
home – their parents or family friends. Some decide to be like their favorite teacher. A child who loves to
10
may want to grow to be the next Picasso or Van Gogh; Someone who loves to
11
might imagine themselves as a famous writer; if a child enjoys dancing, he or she
12
well admire a famous dancer, but this is not the
13
. A lot of dance students wish to be like their
14
teacher.
Therefore, the job of a teacher is
15
just providing knowledge of a given subject. They should be able to
16
their students’ trust and
17
them well. Helping youngsters to learn from models, to learn how to accept
18
with grace and losing with dignity, is central to any parent’s or teacher’s job. Manners are very important and a dance teacher can
19
his or her position and influence to
20
good behaviors to youngsters.

A couple of years ago, a minister(牧师) in an American church got fed up with listening to the people in his church complaining. They were complaining about little

gave each person in the church a purple bracelet(手镯) to wear on their wrists. The bracelet was to

them not to complain.
9
, after three weeks of not complaining, people said they felt happier. They
10
that the less they complained, the happier their lives became.
Complaining seems to be part of our human nature. Life,
11
, is full of difficulties. It is
12
to feel disappointed, irritated and unhappy at times. The real problem,
13
, comes when we take those negative inner feeelings and
14
them out loud. Somehow, it makes everything
15
. The more we complain, the worse we feel; the worse we feel, the more we complain. And it
16
everyone around us, too. It can become a virus of negativity.
Doctors say that complaining is aslo
17
for your health. They say that people who aren’t complainers are healthier, happier, have more friends and are more successful than people who complain all the time. So,
18
something ticks you off, like a rainy day or a bad meal, try
19
your tongue instead of complaining. It will be your contribution to
20
a world without complaints.

One summer evening I was sitting by the open window, reading a good but rather frightening mystery story. After a time it was too dark for me to read easily, so I put my book down and turned on the light.
I was just about to draw the
1
as well when I heard a loud cry “Help! Help! ” It
2
to come from the trees at the end of the garden. I looked out but it was too
3
to see anything clearly. So I decided to go out and have a look in the garden, just
4
someone was in
5
. I took the torch and picked up a strong walking stick,
6
that this might come to be useful, too.
7
with these, I went out into the garden.
8
I heard the cry. There was no
9
that it came from the trees at the end of the garden.
“Who’s there?” I
10
as I walked, rather
11
, down the path that
12
to the trees. But there was no
13
. With the help of my torch I
14
the whole of that part of the garden and the lower
15
of the trees. There was no sign of anybody or anything. I came to the
16
that someone was playing a rather silly joke on me.
17
feeling rather puzzled, I went back to the house and
18
away the torch and the stick. I had just sat down when I was startled by the cry of “ Help! Help! ”, this time from
19
my shoulder. I dropped my book and climbed up. There, sitting
20
of the mantelpiece ( 壁炉 ), was a parrot!

My husband and I are both musicians. I took it
1
granted that one day our daughter Holly would learn to play an instrument.
In 2000 Holly fell
2
and the doctor said she may have been left
3
deaf. “She won’t be able to hear music in any shape or form,” said the doctor. It was a great
4
.
In 2001, her right ear was fitted with a cochlear implant --- electronic equipment that provides a sense of
5
for people who are completely deaf. Seven years later, another was fitted in her
6
ear. The doctors played us a model of what music would sound like to Holly --- I was horrified
7
it was just white noise.
“Holly will hear music,” I
8
saying to myself. I tried to put what had gone wrong right, so we constantly
9
words and sounds to her. She has been having lessons since she was seven . she’s
10
all the time. I’m always surprised by just how much better she does.
When she
11
a national piano competition, the adjudicator
12
Holly for appearing to listen to the sounds she was making --- her whole body, he said to us, was
13
in the process of making music.
I
14
that the model we originally heard of how music sounds with a cochlear implant isn’t
15
holly hears it. The brain is complex and adapts to many
16
;in some way, Holly has made
17
of it all. She loves life. She doesn’t think about what happened to her and says
18
, “I don’t want to talk about bad things. Let’s talk about good things.”
I was determined that her life would not be
19
by a miserable event, but never imagined that she could
20
what she has. I can only describe this as a miracle.
