　　Black Americans have served with honor in every American military action, though this often not written in history books. Even though black men begged to be allowed to serve in the Revolution War, they served well. 　　In the Ituri forest of America live many tribes(部落), one of which is Pygmy. Most of the Pygmies in the tribe are not taller than four feet. They weigh only about eighty pounds each.

　　There are all kinds of devices for marking a book intelligently and fruitfully. Here's the way I do it.

　　Stars have been significant(有意义的)features in the design of many United States coins and their number has varied from one to forty-eight stars. Most of the coins issued(发行)from about 1799 to the early years of the twentieth century bore thirteen stars reprinting the thirteen original colonies(殖民地).

　　Curiously enough, the first American silver coins, issued in 1749, had fifteen stars because by that time Vermont and Kentucky had joined the Union. 　　For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up with their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications: a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job or dealing with affair, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are poor readers.

　　Most reading faults can be traced to early school training. According to Dr. Betts, two persons out of five in school were forced to read material too difficult for them to understand at the time, a frustrating(令人沮丧的)experience which left them with bad reading habits.

　　If the salinity of ocean waters is analyzed, it is found to vary only slightly from place to place. Nevertheless, some of these small changes are important. There are three basic processes that cause a change in oceanic salinity. One of these is the subtraction(减少)of water from the ocean by means of evaporation(蒸发)conversion of liquid water to water vapor. In this manner, the salinity is increased, since the salts stay behind.

　　The opposite of evaporation is precipitation(降水), such as rain, by which water is added to the ocean. This may occur in areas of high rainfall or in coastal regions where rivers flow into the ocean.

　　Normally, in tropical regions where the sun is very strong, the ocean salinity is somewhat higher than it is in other parts of the world where there is not as much evaporation. Similarly, in coastal regions rivers dilute(稀释)the sea, salinity is somewhat lower than in other oceanic area.

　　A third process by which salinity may be altered is associated (关联)with the formation and melting of sea ice. When seawater is frozen, the dissolved(溶解的)materials are left behind. In this manner, seawater directly beneath freshly formed sea ice has a higher salinity than it did before the ice appeared.
