In the Ituri forest of America live many tribes(部落), one of which is Pygmy. Most of the Pygmies in the tribe are not taller than four feet. They weigh only about eighty pounds each.

In spite of their small size, they are the best hunters among all the jungle people. Even the great elephant can be caught by them. They can shoot three or four arrows so rapidly that often the last one Leaves the bow before the first has hit its mark. If an arrow should miss its aim, the impatient Pygmy may become very angry, breaking his arrows and stepping on them.

Since they do not plant any crops, Pygmies are constantly moving around. They seldom sleep in one camp for more than a few days. In their camps there is not furniture at all except for some weapons such as spears, bows and arrows. There are no cooking pots either. Food is eaten uncooked or smoked over a fire. So when the tribe moves to a new camp there is nothing to carry except these weapons and babies too small to walk.

Pygmies can move on the tree tops almost as skillfully as monkeys. Often they travel great distances through the branches without touching the ground.

One of the surprising facts about these small men and women is their great appetite(食欲). A Pygmy can eat up sixty bananas at a single meal besides quantities of meat. After eating, they will lie on their hard earth bed and groan(呻吟)in all night. But in the morning, they are ready to eat the same amount of food or fight among themselves.

One hundred and thirteen million Americans have at least one bank-issued credit card they give their owners automatic credit in stores, restaurants and hotels, at home, across the country and even abroad and they make many banking services available as well. More and more of these credit cards can be read automatically. Making it possible to withdraw or deposit(存)money in scattered (分散的)places, whether or not the local branch bank is open. For many of us the“cashless society”is not on the horizon——it's already here.

While computers offer these conveniences(方便)to consumers, they have many vantages for sellers, too. Electronic cash registers can do much more than simply ring up sales, they can keep a wide rang of records, including who sold what, when and to whom. This information allows businessman to keep track of their list of goods by showing, which items are being sold and how fast they are moving. Decisions to reorder or return goods to suppliers can then be made. At the same time these computers record which hours are busiest and which employees are the most efficient. And they also identify(确定)preferred customers for promotional(奖励)campaign(活动). Computers are relied on by manufacture for similar reasons. Stars have been significant(有意义的)features in the design of many United States coins and their number has varied from one to forty-eight stars. Most of the coins issued(发行)from about 1799 to the early years of the twentieth century bore thirteen stars reprinting the thirteen original colonies(殖民地).

Curiously enough, the first American silver coins, issued in 1749, had fifteen stars because by that time Vermont and Kentucky had joined the Union. At that time it was apparently the intention of mint(铸)officials to add a star for each new state. Following the admission of Tennessee in 1796, for example, some varieties of half dimes, dimes and half-dollars were produced with sixteen stars.

As more states were admitted to the Union, however, it quickly became apparent that this scheme(方案) would not prove practical and the coins from 1798 on were issued with only thirteen stars one for each of the original colonies. Due to an error at the mint, one variety of the 1808 half cent was issued with only twelve stars. But this is the result of a die(模具)break and is not a true error.

(1)What is the main topic of the passage about?

[ ]

A.The teaching of astronomy in state universities.

B.Stars on American coins.

C.Colonial stamps and coins.

D.The star as national symbol of the United States.

A.Vermont and Kentucky joined at the same time.

B.Kentucky joined before Tennessee and Vermont.

C.Tennessee joined after Tennessee and Kentucky.

D.Vermont joined after Tennessee and Kentucky.

(3)Why was a coin produced in 1808 with only twelve stars?

[ ]

A.There were twelve states at the time.

B.There was a change in design policy.

C.Tennessee had left the Union.

D.The mint made a mistake.

(4)Which of the following best describes the organization of the passage?

[ ]

A.A narrative account of coinage.

B.An argumentative discussion of stars on the U.S. coins.

C.A general statement followed by specific examples.

For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up with their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications: a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job or dealing with affair, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are poor readers.

Most reading faults can be traced to early school training. According to Dr. Betts, two persons out of five in school were forced to read material too difficult for them to understand at the time, a frustrating(令人沮丧的)experience which left them with bad reading habits.

Fortunately, almost anyone can learn to read faster and with more comprehension. Age makes little difference. According to a recent study of 138 students at The Reading laboratory, Inc, all age groups showed a marked increase in reading rate after training ——from 93 percent for the 50~90 age group to 99.4 percent for the 20~29 age group. Dr. Mila Banton Smith, director of New York University's Reading Institute, says that the average adult student, in 28 training hours, nearly triples(三倍的) his reading speed and boosts(增长)his comprehension by about 30 percent.

The best way to improve your reading, of course, is to enroll (登记)in a reading clinic. If there's no clinic handy(手边的) or you can improve your reading ability yourself——provided you have no eyes trouble. (If reading tired you easily or makes your eyes or head ache, you should consult a doctor.)

In Europe, many people make friends across the borders between their countries through town twinning. Town or city twinning means two towns in different countries agree and decide to become“twins”with sister city relationship.

Their citizens find pen friends in the twin town. They exchange newspapers and stamps. The school teachers discuss teaching methods with the teachers in the twin town. Officials visit the twin town for celebrations. Ordinary citizens travel to the twin town, too, but not very often if it is far away.

Sometimes, schools even exchange their classes for two or three weeks! For example, German middle school students study for a while at the school in their twin town in Britain, staying with British families. A few months later, their British friends come to study in Germany.

Some towns even arrange exchange visits for theatre groups, choirs(歌唱队) and orchestras(管弦乐队). Others send lecturers to the twin town who tell the people there all about their own town, and show photos and slides.

Some towns organize exhibitions to show works of art, for example paintings by artists from their twin town.

Tonbridge, a medium-sized town in Kent, for example, has twin towns in both Germany and France. Richmond near London has links with Germany, France and even a town in a Balkan(巴尔干岛)country!

Is it possible that the people of the world today could agree upon a single international language that everyone would be able to speak and understand?

In the United Nations there are five official languages English, Chinese, Russian, French and Spanish. How about making one of them into an international language? English has been worked on for this purpose. A basic word list of about 850 English words named Basic English was made. These are the only verbs in the entire list:“come, go, give, keep, let, do, put, make, say, be, seem, may, will, have, send”. Writing in Basic English may require you to use a greater number of words——as in having to say“it came to my ears”instead of “I heard”——but you can still say anything you want to with about 850 different words and a few suffixes and prefixes. This is a much smaller number of words to have to memorize than the ordinary number offered to the students of a foreign language.

But people have always had a need to do more than simply“tell it as it is”. Language is for reporting not only one's work. For this, a language needs idioms, needs all kinds of grammar and style that reflect its history and development just as a person needs eyebrows. Is there some special reason why our lips should be a different color from our skin? Perhaps not, but this is how people——real people——are. For communication between people, languages in all diversity(各种各样)will remain to reflex the growth and soul of the societies that speak them.

(1)If we write a composition in Basic English, it will be ________.

[ ]

A.longer than usual

B.shorter than usual

C.hard for us to express what we want to

D.able to express ourselves in different style as we like to

(2)In the passage“tell it as it is”means ________.

[ ]

A.people can use Basic English to say what they want to

B.people think Basic English can express what they see or hear

C.people say what they want to according to the fact

D.tell something they like to

(3)This passage begins with a question. According to the writer's opinion, the answer to the question may be“________.”

[ ]

A.It will be possible in the future

B.It seems to be possible if people agree to use Basic English

C.It seems impossible that people can use a simple language to express themselves in various lives

D.It is impossible except that the five official UN languages are used at the same time

(4)Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

[ ]

A.The words used in Basic English are strictly limited to 850, and nothing more.

B.Basic English seems not to be so easy to learn.

C.Basic English can be used to express our complicated thought easily.

D.Basic English is not a natural development of the English language.

If the salinity of ocean waters is analyzed, it is found to vary only slightly from place to place. Nevertheless, some of these small changes are important. There are three basic processes that cause a change in oceanic salinity. One of these is the subtraction(减少)of water from the ocean by means of evaporation(蒸发)conversion of liquid water to water vapor. In this manner, the salinity is increased, since the salts stay behind.

The opposite of evaporation is precipitation(降水), such as rain, by which water is added to the ocean. This may occur in areas of high rainfall or in coastal regions where rivers flow into the ocean.

Normally, in tropical regions where the sun is very strong, the ocean salinity is somewhat higher than it is in other parts of the world where there is not as much evaporation. Similarly, in coastal regions rivers dilute(稀释)the sea, salinity is somewhat lower than in other oceanic area.

A third process by which salinity may be altered is associated (关联)with the formation and melting of sea ice. When seawater is frozen, the dissolved(溶解的)materials are left behind. In this manner, seawater directly beneath freshly formed sea ice has a higher salinity than it did before the ice appeared. Of course, when this ice melts, it will tend to decrease the salinity of the surrounding water.

In the Weddle Sea, off America, the densest water in the oceans is formed as a result of this freezing process, which increases the salinity of cold water. This heavy water sinks and is found in the deeper portions of the oceans of the world.

(1)All of the following are processes that decrease salinity except ________.
