Modern Examinations

In ancient times the most important examinations were, spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches.

Generally, however, modem examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modem industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an objective test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teachers write a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.

Modern Farms of America Today

On the old-time farms in America there were chickens and turkeys (火鸡). There were also cows, pigs and other livestocks(家畜). But there were very few machines. Most of the work was done by the entire farm family with the help of a “hired man” . Sometimes extra labourers were needed in busy seasons. Horses provided 79 percent of the power used, labour 15 percent and machines only 6 percent.

Today all that has changed. On many modem farms machines now provide 96 percent of the power, human labour 3 percent, and horses 1 percent. Modern farms are enterprising (企业性的)business which keep only livestocks that can pay its way(支付费用). The children go to school by bus every morning, the parents work on the farm or in the house, and hired help is seldom needed. Their work has been replaced by a whole army of machines.

Farms in the machine age also use the new fertilizer, new feeds (饲料), new hybrid (杂交) seeds, and other helps developed by farm sciences. As a result the farmers are able to produce more food with less labour. This means fewer but larger farms, and fewer but more prosperous farmers.

Laptop(便携式)computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1, 500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The student with laptops will also have access(有……的机会)to the Internet. Besides, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak”with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees---anywhere at all !

Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerul, they become more similar to desktop computers. What's more, the laptop computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptop can help students. State officials also are testing laptop programs at other universities, too.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff(教职工)use computers. The laptop will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we' re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

The Second Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, the longest cable bridge (斜拉桥)in China, has been completed seven months ahead of time and will be open to traffic at the end of this month.

The 21.2-kilometre-long project actually is made up of two bridges, with an expressway across the Bagua Island in the Yangtze River connecting(连接)the two. The southernmost of the two bridges, with a span(跨度)of 628 metres, is the longest in China and the third longest in the world. The bridge was designed by the Construction Designing Institute of the Transportation Department of China, and was built by the Hunan Road and Bridge Company. The Begua Bridge was started in July 1997.

According to Dai Yongning, vice-mayor of Nanjing and the project leader, the new bridge, with a capacity (容量)to take 60,000 transport per day, was built to lessen the pressure(缓解压力)on the old one. The old bridge was only designed to take 15,000 transport per day, 35,000 less than the actual amount in 1999, and more than 20,000 square metres of the road surface is now damaged on the bridge as a result. “Quality is of great importance in the project.”said Dai. Strong measures have been taken against possible corruption (腐败)during the bridge's construction process, which costs a total investment(投资)of 3 billion yuan ( US $361 million).

Key universities in East China, including the southeast, Tongji and Zhejiang universities, together with foreign consultation companies, have been invited to check the project. The half-built bridge was completely undamaged in the disastrous flood of 1998.

Have you ever asked yourself why children go to school? You will probably say that they go to school to learn both their native and some foreign languages, maths, history, but what do they learn these things for? And are these things all that they learn at school?

We send our children to school to prepare them for a bright future. Many of the things they study at school have some practical use in their life. But is that the only reason why they go to school?

There is more in education than just memorizing facts. We go to school above all to learn how to learn independently(独立的)or teach ourselves, so that when we finish our schooling, we can continue to learn. A man who really knows how to learn will always be more likely to succeed in his life than those who are not good at self-taught. The educated person, whenever he has to do something new, will rapidly teach himself how to do it in the best way. In the early pad of the twentieth century, racism was widespread in the United States. Marry African Americans were not given equal opportunities in education or employment. Marian Anderson (1897~1993)was an African American woman who gained fame as a concert singer in this climate of racism. She was born in Philadelphia and sang in church choirs during her childhood. When she applied for admission to a local music school in 1917, she was turned down because she was black. Unable to attend music school, she began her career as a singer for church gatherings.
