One should be moderate in all things. Moderation is always the safest way to do things, and a virtue we should have. Let's take the student life for example. There are some students who study too hard and play too little, while there are others who play too much and study too little. On the one hand, it is harmful to his health if he does too few physical exercises, and on the other hand, it is harmful to his mind if he plays too much.

In the matter of eating, one also should be moderate. Don't eat too much or too little. Eating too much will make you sick, while eating too little will make you weak.

The man of progress is he who neither has too high an opinion of himself nor thinks too poorly of himself. If he thinks too high of himself, he is surely to become very proud, but if he has too poor an opinion of himself, he will have no courage to make an advance. Both conditions above will make you lose your aim in life. A broadminded man is he who always moves within the orbit of reasonableness. In any activities in one's life, moderation is one of the best ways to enjoy real happiness.

Perhaps the biggest difference is in the growth of computers. Computers can think, can remember, can calculate faster than any human brain. A computer can hold more than a million fads in its memory. There are computers that are so big that they would fill this entire auditorium with machinery. Business and banks are now managed by computers. Student's grades, their marks are all managed by computers. If you work in America, you would receive your marks on little print out from the computer, not from your teachers. In America we pay bills. We have to pay our children's university study from a computer and I pay the computer who then writes me another letter to say, “ Thank you for your payment. You now own such and such amount. ”This is not even seen by a human being. It is all between me and computer. However, if a computer makes a mistake, that won't help you. If a computer makes a mistake about one of you, it is terribly difficult to correct that mistake. And sometimes a computer does make a mistake, that mistake is never learned by another computer and the same mistake will go into other computers. And it becomes terribly difficult for one single person to correct a mistake that has been made. So in many ways people have become the servant of computers who are bigger and cleverer than they are. Of course, computers speed up every operation because computers can immediately record, remember facts and produce new information that combines with these facts. It makes science possible. Modem science would not be possible without the computers to do the calculations.

For years, judo(现代柔道) has been Japan's most popular sport. Now it is becoming popular in America, too. How does a judo match work?

First, two judo students bow to each other. This is a sign of respect and greeting. It is like shaking hands. Then each student tries to pin the other on his back for 30 seconds. Sometimes, a student pretends not to struggle. Then he suddenly throws the other off balance. Or he may lift the other up and throw him down in one motion. Another way to win is to hold your opponent in a painful grip. Then you force him to give up.

There is no kicking or hitting in judo. Your size and strength don't matter. The important things to have are balance, quick-ness, and the ability to think ahead.

A judo student wears loose pants and a loose jacket. A belt goes around his jacket. The colour of the belt tells how good he is at judo. Beginners wear white belts. Skilled students wear brown belts. Those who wear black belts are the most skilled of all.

At first, judo was taught as a form of self-defence. Used in this way, it can cripple or kill. But as a sport, it does not bring permanent injury or pain. In fact, judo is now called“a gentle art”. Those who learn judo skills also learn courtesy, respect for others and clear thinking.

This fact appears to be especially true if a person's work involves mental activity. Jupiter's Moons and How They Travel
