Hank Viscardi was 26 years old when he put on his first pair of long trousers and his first pair of shoes. For the first time he saw himself as he had always wanted to be -a full five feet eight inches tall.

Hank had been born without legs. Until he was seven , his world was a world of repeated operations. At last he had no legs , but stumps (残肢) that could be fitted with a kind of special boots.

Out of the hospital, Hank often found people staring at him with cruel interest. Children laughed at him and called him “Ape Man” because his arms dragged (拖) on the ground.

He went to school like other boys. His grades were good and he needed only eight years instead of the usual twelve.

After graduation , Hank worked his way through college. He swept floors , waited on table , or worked in one of the college offices. During all this busy life , Hank had been moving around on his stumps. But one day the doctor told him even the stumps were not going to last much longer. Hank would soon have to use a wheel chair.

Hank felt himself go cold all over. However, the doctor said there was a chance that he could be fitted with artificial legs.

Finally a leg maker was found and the day came when Hank stood up before the mirror and saw himself for the first time , five feet eight inches tall.

But this was not the end yet. He had to learn to use his new legs. Again and again he marched the length of the room, and marched back again. There were times when he fell down on the floor, but he pulled himself up and went back to the endless marching. He went out on the street. He climbed the stairs and learned to dance. He built a boat and learned to sail it.

When World War Ⅱ came , he talked the Red Cross into giving him a job. He took the regular training. He marched and drilled along with the other soldiers. Few knew that he was legless. This was the true story of Hank Viscardi , the man without legs.

The temperature of your body should always be the same if you are fine , no matter whether the weather is hot or cold. That is why the doctor tests your temperature with a thermometer when you are sick. Normally , your body temperature is ninety-eight point six degrees Fahrenheit (华氏的).If it is higher than that , it is a sure sign that something is wrong with your body.

Your body keeps the same temperature all the time, because it balances (平衡) the heat it produces and the heat it gives off. It is always burning up food and producing heat. It can produce heat faster when the body needs or gives off heat faster when the body becomes too warm. Let's see how this works.

The heat of your body is given off chiefly through the skin. When you feel cold , your skin is tight and shows “goose flesh”. When you feel chilly (寒冷的) , you must jump around to keep warm. Then your muscles begin to work , burn up fuel and produce more heat. It is not pleasant to shiver (颤抖) , so you usually prefer warming up by taking exercise, or put on more clothes to keep warm.

When you get warm, the skin is loose and soft. It is so supplied with blood that heat is given off rapidly. If you get too warm , you begin to sweat and more body heat is used in evaporating (蒸发) the moisture (水分) in your body. In warm weather or warm rooms, you wear less clothing, so that heat can be given off freely. You prefer less exercise because your body is warm enough, and the extra heat produced by taking too much exercise makes you uncomfortable.

Now you see why you feel differently in different kinds of weather. In summer, when it is hot, you feel tired and lazy. You do not care to work of play, but enjoy lying down and doing nothing. When you get out of doors in winter, the cold air makes you feel lively. You want to run and play.

1.How does the body keep the same temperature all the time?

[ ]

A.It balances the heat it gets and loses.

B.It is always producing heat from food.

C.It gives off the heat that the body produces.

D.It stops producing heat when it needs to.

2.When a person gets chilly , which of the following will NOT happen to him?

[ ]

A.His skin will become tight in order to keep warm.

B.He can exercise to make his muscles produce more heat.

C.He can put on more clothes to keep warm.

D.He will certainly shiver to produce more heat.

3.When a person gets too warm, he begins to sweat in order to ________.

[ ]

A.evaporate the moisture

B.give off heat quickly

C.make the skin soft and loose

D.get the blood to move faster

4.From this passage we know that we feel differently in different kinds of weather because ________.

[ ]

A.our bodies deal with different kinds of weather in different ways to keep the same temperature

B.we feel tired and lazy in summer and lively in winter when we are outside in cold air

C.we have different emotions in different kinds of weather

What should you think about in trying to find your career (职业) ? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand , you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.

Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metal work or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills.

If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.

Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs (拇指)when you handle tools. Perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record , for instance , may not be too good , yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.

1.Which of the following best sums up (概述) the first paragraph?

B.Using school performance to help to choose a career.

C.The importance of being good at all subjects.

D.The indirect value of school work.

[ ]

A.a waste of time that could have been spent on study

B.useful for his future work

C.a good way to earn extra money

3.According to the passage, if a student's school record is not good, he ________.

[ ]

A.will be a complete failure in his future work

B.will not be able to find a suitable job

C.will regret not having worked harder at school

D.may do well in his future work

4.The whole passage centers on ________.

[ ]

A.choosing a career according to what one is skilled in

B.acquiring (获取) knowledge by working hard at school

C.finding one's strong and weak points

D.developing one's abilities useful in school work

A giant ( very large ) panda from the Beijing Zoo has been saved by a transfusion of blond from two black bears. But it's still under special care , according to the Beijing Zoo.

Yong Liang, two years old , is the first giant panda raised from birth in the zoo. Last month zoo keepers found the panda was suffering from serious anaemia (贫血) , calling for urgent (紧急的) blood transfusion.

The best way , according to zoo's experts , to save Yong Liang from anaemia would have been to transfuse blood from another panda. But it was the breeding ( reproducing) season for giant pandas, making such a transfusion very difficult.

But the experts found that there exists a close consanguinity (血缘) between giant pandas and black bears , and so they decided to try to take blood from black bears in the zoo and transfuse it to Yong Liang.

With the help of hospitals and the Beijing Blood Donor Station, they made an experiment which proved that the red blood cells in the blood of black bears can be used.

We found that bar at last, I didn't have to ask again, for there it was in big red neon (霓虹灯) letters over the windowStar Bar. There were some iron tables outside with plastic chairs around them. A few people sat listlessly around, looking at a portable television set that someone had brought out of the bar. They were all in thin summer dresses or short-sleeved shirts; even at that late hour it was stifling. A fire drill is, to put it mildly, an inconvenient exercise at the best of times. A fire drill at 2:00 in the morning in terrible weather conditions, like the one we had on Thursday night to Friday morning last, is incomparably more inconvenient. That is why I am writing this note to thank you all most sincerely for your excellent cooperation and the spirit with which you endured the inconvenience.

A fire drill is not a meaningless exercise. It is an extremely serious one and can, in fact, save lives in the long run. Last week's fire drill has already shown a number of “deaf spots” in the hall, namely, the two rooms in Purser House and some rooms in the Bottow Corridor. I have no reason to doubt that residents from these areas could not hear the alarm. I shall request an immediate examination of this problem.

I should , also remind you that it is a requirement that fire drills are regularly carried out ( at least two in every one year ) and each resident is made fully aware of this and take part. All residents must take fire precautions with enough seriousness. Failure to do so can result in heavy fires and moving out of the hall. Thank you again for your cooperation.

1.This note is made to ________.

[ ]

A.some fireman
B.residents of that area
C.students of a college
D.a regualr audience

It seems like every year brings a new outbreak of sickness. Recent research tells us how diseases spread from person to person. And it also gives us an idea how we can spread something better than diseases.

An author called Malcom Gladwell recently published a book explaining how the process works. We usually think of a epidemic (流行病) as a force of nature that rolls over anyone in its way. In fact , it starts with a single person or very few people. These people travel around and infect (传染) small groups in different places. When enough of these groups are infected then the disease suddenly seems to be everywhere. Gladwell also found that the process of infection was not just limited to disease. It also affects the world of ideas.

The process can be seen in books and fashion. So called “underground bestsellers” are not pushed towards the public. They spread through hundreds of small reading groups until the day when everybody you know seems to have a copy. A group of young people may decide to wear an item of clothing simply because none else is wearing it. Designers who monitor street fashion then pick up the idea and spread it. Finally everyone is wearing it.

New York is often described as an unfriendly place. People are too busy looking after business to look after each other. In the early 1990s, one unknown person decided to perform at least one kind act a day. This caught on with his or her friends. The newspapers noticed the trend (趋势). New York became full of people smiling and carrying each other's bags.

The success of trends like this fits in with other social phenomena (现象) . One is the 80/20 rule. This was invented by economists who noticed that in any situation 20 percent of the people did 80 percent of the work. Another is the “bystander problem”. Psychologists noticed that in accidents where a large number of people were around, no one stepped forward to help. Each person supposed that someone else would do something. When there were less people present, more of them decided to offer help.

What all this proves is the power of individuals (个人) and small groups. The “epidemic model” could be a great way of making a business grow or spreading an idea. A small start can make a big difference.

1.The writer's main purpose is to tell us ________.

[ ]

A.how diseases spread

B.how ideas are formed

C.how popularity takes place

D.what diseases and ideas have in common

2.What do “underground bestsellers” refer to in this text?

[ ]

A.Books which are good but few people know about.

B.Books which become popular without advertising.

C.Booksellers who are good at selling books.

D.Booksellers who sell books without advertising.

3.Which of the following may be connected with “the epidemic model”?

[ ]

A.A popular movie.

B.A beautiful dress.

C.A good idea.

D.A successful businessman.

4.The 80/20 rule shows the fact that ________.

[ ]
