On the coast of Cuba lived an old fisherman. He was thin and had many deep lines in the back of his neck. His skin was very brown, and his hands were marked by pulling heavy fish at the end of ropes. But all these marks were old. Every part of him seemed old except his eyes. They were cheerful and the same color as the sea.

For eighty days he did not catch any fish. People said that the old man was unlucky. But the old man still loved the sea. He was still strong and a good fisherman. On the eighty fifth day the old man sailed farther out to sea than any of the other boats. He sailed to where the water was very deep. Then he felt fishing-line being pulled gently by a big fish which was swimming very deep in the water.

LONDON--A morning's train ride away, across the Channel. English kids talk about Liverpool's soccer team in a Paris pub.

Some Parisians have even started to go to work in London.

In the 19 century, Charles Dickens compared the two great rival(竞争的)cities, London and Paris, in “A Tale of Two Cities.”These days, it might be A Tale of One City.

Parisians are these days likely to smile in sympathy at a visitor's broken French and respond in polite English.

As Jobs grew lack at home over recent years, perhaps 250,000 Frenchmen moved across the Channel. With an undersea tunnel, they could travel between cities in three hours. The European Union frees them from immigration and customs.

Paris, rich in beauty, is more attractive. But London feels more full of life, and more fun until the pubs shut down.

“For me, the difference is that London is real, alive,”said Trevor Wheeler, a banker.

Chantal Jaouen, a professional designer, agrees.“I am French, but I'll stay in London,”she said.

There is, of course, the other view. Julie Lenoux is a student who moved to London two years ago.“I think people laugh more in Paris,”she said.

In fact, London and Paris, with their obvious new similarities, are beyond the old descriptions. As the European Union gradually loosened controls, Londoners flocked into Paris to shop, eat and buy property.

“Both cities have changed beyond recognition. ”said Larry Collins, a writer and sometimes a Londoner.

Like most people who know both well, he finds the two now fit together comfortably.

“I first fell in love with Paris in the 1950s, and is still a wonderful place.”Collins said.

“But if I had to choose, it would be London. Things are so much more ordered, and life is better.”

  But certainly not cheaper.

In fancy parts of London, rents can be twice than those on Avenue Foch in Paris.

Deciding between London and Paris requires a lifestyle choice.

Like Daphne Benoit, a French journalism student with perfect English, many young people are happy to be close enough to they don't have to choose.

“I love Paris, my little neighborhood, the way I can walk around a centre, but life is so structured,”she said.“In London, you can be who you want. No one cares.”

On June 17, 1744, the officials from Maryland and Virginia held a talk with the Indians of the Six Nations. The Indians were invited to send boys to William and Mary College. In a letter the next day they refused the offer as follows:

We know that you have a high opinion of the kind of learning taught in your colleges, and that the costs of living of our young men, while with you, would be very expensive to you. We are certain that you mean to do us good by your suggestion; and we thank you heartily. But you must know that different nations have different ways of looking at things, and you will therefore not be displeased if our ideas of this kind of education happen not to be the same as yours. We have had some experience of it. Several of our young people were formerly brought up at the colleges of the northern provinces; they were taught all your sciences; but, when they came back to us, they were bad runners, and they knew little little of every means of living in the woods...they were totally good for noting.

We are, however, not the less obliged by your kind offer, though we refuse to accept it; and to show our grateful sense of it, if the gentlemen of Virginia will send us a dozen of their sons, we will take care of their education, teach them in all we know, and make men of them.

I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be most wonderful thing in the word.

Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother.“But the desk,”she'd said again, “is for Elizabeth.”

I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was“too emotional”. But she lived“on the surface”.

As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.

My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace-it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

Now the present of her desk told, as she'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work, I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside--a photo of my father and one-page letter, folded and refolded many times.

Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

Thirty-two people watched Kitty Genovese being killed right beneath their windows. She was their neighbor. Yet none of the 32 helped her. No one even called the police. Was gunman cruel? Was it lack of feeling about one's fellow man?

“Not so,”say scientists John Barley and Bib Fatane. These men went beyond the headlines to find out the reasons why people didn't act. They found that a person has to go through two steps before he can help. First he has to notice that is an emergency(紧急情况).

Suppose you see a middle-aged man fall to the sidewalk. Is he having a heart attack? Is he in a coma(昏迷)from diabetes(糖尿病)? Or is he about to sleep off a drunk?

Is the smoking coming into the room from a leak in the air conditioning? Is it “stea, pipes”or is it really smoke from a fire? It's not always easy to tell if you are facing a real emergency.

Second, and more important, the person faced with an emergency must feel personally responsible. He must feel that he must help, or the person won't get the help he needs.

The researchers found that a lot depends on how many people are around. They had college students in to be “tested”. Some came alone. some came with one or two others. And some came in large groups. The receptionist started them off on the “test”. Then she went into the next room. A curtain divided the “testing room”and the room in which she went. Soon the students heard a scream, the noise of file cabinets falling and a cry for help. All of this had been pre-recorded on a tape recorder.

Eight out of ten of the students taking the test alone acted to help. Of the students in pairs, only two out of ten helped. Of the students in groups, none helped.

In other words, in a group, Americans often fail to act. They feel that others will act. They, themselves, needn't. They do not feel any direct responsibility.

Are people bothered by situations where people are in trouble? Yes. Scientists found that people were emotional, they sweated, they had trembling hands. They felt the other persons' trouble. But they didn't trouble. But they didn't act. They were in a group. Their actions were shaped by the actions of those they were with.

(1)The purpose of this passage is to explain ________

[ ]

A.why people fail to act in emergencies

B.when people will be tested in emergencies

C.what people will do in emergencies

D.how people feel in emergencies

(2)Which of the following is NOT true?

[ ]

A.When a person tries to help others, he must be clear that there is a real emergency.

B.When a person tries to help others, he should know whether they need his help.

C.A person must take full responsibility for the safety of those in emergencies if he wants to help.

D.A person with a heart attack needs help badly.

(3)The researchers have conducted an experiment to prove that people will act in emergencies when ________

[ ]

A.they are in pairs.

B.they are in groups.

C.they are alone.

D.they are with their friends.

(4)The main reason why people fail to act when they stay together is that ________.

[ ]

A.they are afraid of emergencies

B.they are reluctant(不情愿的)to get themselves involved

C.others will act if they themselves hesitate

D.they do not feel any direct responsibility for those who need help

(5)The author suggests that ________.

[ ]

A.we shouldn't blame a person if he fails to help

B.a person must feel guilty if he fails to help

C.people should be responsible for themselves in emergencies

D.when you are in trouble, people will help you anyway

Everywhere you will always find “the white-haired boy”, sometimes called “the fair-haired boy”. He gets special treatment, as if he were above everybody else. You will find him in school, in college, at home, or where you work.

In school, he is a teacher's pet, her darling who can do nothing wrong. Sometimes she lets him do little jobs for her. He comes to class in the morning, all shiny and clean. He is always raising his hand, ready with an answer to the teacher's questions. And he knows all the answers. He “gets into your hair”, especially if you are at the bottom of the class and the teacher thinks you are stupid. How you hate the brat!

At college, he walks--more often strides -- across the school grounds as if he owned them. Sometimes he wears a colorful football or basketball shirt or sweater, with a bright red, or green or yellow college letter proudly worn on the front of it. What broad shoulders, what muscles he has! He makes the girls happy by just smiling at them. He has the mark of success on him.

Then, you discover that there are others who share your feelings, ready to “let their hair down” to tell you their private thoughts. One of them asks,“What does he have that I haven't got.”You ask yourself the same question.
