You must be firm, ________ you think yourself to be right.

B.

D.
no matter how
My husband Sid and I were never able to have children. I had always wanted a family and that feeling
1
after his death. He was all I had. When he
2
, I felt like I had lost my entire family. I never
3
I would finally get the family I had always wished for. A few years later I met Tom. When we married, I
4
got four grown children and eight grandchildren.
I was
5
about my first meeting with his children. My worries melted away when I realized that they
6
me and were more than willing to bring me into their family. And when his daughters
7
me if their children could call me “Mimi,” I was excited, Tom was divorced, and
8
I was also concerned about the
9
that the children already had two grandmothers. Would the little ones understand
10
I fit into the family?
At our first extended family gathering, I
11
our six-year-old grandson Jim staring at me with a
12
look. He seemed to be thinking about something serious.
13
sporting a big grin(咧嘴笑),he jumped and said, “I know who you are! You are our
14
grandma!” At that moment, I know it was time to just relax and enjoy my new
15
.
People say when a door close, God opens a window. Now I know what that
16
. I lost so much joy when Sid died,
17
now I have a new happy life. I am enjoying so many things I
18
got to experience before like reading bedtime stories. My refrigerator is covered with drawings, and my walls are
19
with photos of the kids. I may be an instant “extra” grandma in Jim’s eyes, but I am just as
20
any other “regular” grandma I know.

My friend , Sally , had a failed marriage in the past . After divorce , her parents gave the deepest protection and care to her by helping her

the child and offering

Nonetheless , her father , an honest and upright old man , after hearing his ex-son-in-law got

his boss why such a playboy could get promoted . The whole office fell into a
8

9
. The old man stood silently in the office with his bands
10
and eyes tearing .
That night , Sally cried heavily in front of me . I asked her whether it was her father’s
11
deeds that made her feel embarrassed . But she said that she felt
12
about her dad and that though the rest of the whole world betrayed her , her old father would still
13
her up and help her get the
14
she deserved , just as when she was young and the neighboring boy grabbed her ball , her father would get it back for her .
15
, this changed world was no longer the stage for her old father and his deeds became funnily out-of-date . No one managed to see the real and ever-lasting love to his daughter behind his
16
rude behaviors .
Although we have grown up , our parents still would not like us to
17
a bit and try all means to
18
us without caring whether what they do is awkward and stupid or not .
Who in the world would love us so deeply and relentlessly without asking for any

After my 26 second-graders finished reciting the text, they settled back in their seats. But Duane was still
1
there. Duane was a bright and lovable student,
2
his mother, a single parent, had many problems such as drinking.
3
that he might have had a bad night, I walked over to him to see what was wrong. As he looked up, I could see the
4
in his dark eyes.
“Mrs. Brown, aren’t you going to open my present for you?” he asked
5
. “I put it on your desk.”
Getting back his gift from my desk, he handed it to me. I noticed my gift
6
to be a matchbox. Duane told me that this was really a jewelry box
7
a matchbox. As I opened it, the
8
of two beer caps surprised me. Duane
9
me that they were two earrings. He had noticed that I
10
wore earrings and wanted me to have some pretty ones.
I was
11
by Duane’s creativity and thoughtfulness.
12
birth, one of my ears was slightly deformed (畸形的). Fearing that wearing earrings might
13
to the ear, I avoided wearing them. But how could I
14
to wear these precious earrings given by this
15
child?
As I placed the earrings on my ears, my
16
clapped, and Duane stood proudly beside me.
Since then, the matchbox remained on my desk. It
17
me of Duane’s act of kindness and of the lessons he taught me. Although his
18
at home was bad, Duane continued to see the good in life. Although poor, he still wanted to
19
. Whenever I see Duane’s gift on my desk, I feel encouraged. If I am having
20
reaching a student, I’11 try to be like Duane and give that student a piece of my heart.

Fifteen years spent in the field of education has provided me with many treasured moments. One of the most unforgettable
1
when I was teaching second
2
In May I decided to plan something special for the children; a Mother’s Day tea. We had put our heads together to
3
ideas of how to
4
our mothers. We practiced singing songs, memorized poems and wrote cards. We decided to hold our tea the Friday before Mother’s Day. I was surprised and
5
to learn that every mother was planning to attend. I
6
invited my own mother.
Finally, the big day arrived. Each child
7
up at our classroom door, expecting the arrival of his or her mom.
8
it got closer to starting time, I looked around and my eyes quickly found Jimmy. His mother hadn’t shown up and he was looking
9
.
I took my mother by the hand and walked over to Jimmy. “Jimmy,” I said, “I have a bit of problem here and I was
10
if you could keep my mother
11
while I’m busy.”
My mom and Jimmy sat at a table. Jimmy
12
my mom her treats, presented her with the gift I had made, just as we had
13
the day before. Whenever I looked over, my mother and Jimmy were in deep
14
.
Now 10 years later, I work with students of all ages, educating them about the environment. Last year, I took a senior class on a field trip, and there was Jimmy, I had the students complete an outline of the day’s
15
and an evaluation of our trip. Then I collected the students’ booklets and checked them to see if
16
was completed. When I came
17
Jimmy’s page, he had written “Remember our Mother’s Day tea we had in second grade, Mrs, Marra? I do! Thanks for all you did for me, and thank your mother, too.”
I told him I really enjoyed what he had written. He looked rather embarrassed and
18
his own thanks and walked away. Suddenly he ran bark and gave me a big hug. “Thanks again. No one even knew my mother didn’t
19
it.”
I ended my workday with a hug from a teenage boy who had
20
stopped hugging teachers years ago.

When I was a teenager I volunteered to work at the water station at a 10,000 m race. My
1
was to pass out water to the runners. I remember being so excited to see all the different kinds of
2
who passed by and
3
a cup of water. The next year I signed up for the
4
and gave it a shot.
The first 10,000 m race was quite an experience. I jogged, I walked, I jogged and I walked. At times, I didn’t
5
if I could finish.
At one point near the end, a 70-year-old man ran past me very
6
, and I felt embarrassed that I was 50 years younger than him and I couldn’t even keep up with him. I felt
7
for a second.
But then I
8
something. He was running his race and I was running mine. He had
9
capacities, experience, training and goals for himself. I had mine. Remember my
10
was only to finish.
After a minute, it
11
me that this was a lesson I could draw from . I learned
12
about myself in that moment. I turned my
13
into inspiration.
I decided that I would not
14
running races. In fact, I would run even more races and I would learn how to train and
15
properly and one day I would be one of those 70-year-olds who were still running. As I
16
the finishing line, I was proud
17
my accomplishment.
In life we all have those moments when we
18
ourselves to others. It’s only
19
. Don’ allow those moments to weaken you. Turn them into
20
and let them inspire you. Use them to show you what is possible.
