A beautiful girl was shopping with her mother in Blue-sky Market. It was
1
hard outside. Many people all stood there under the awning (遮雨蓬). They waited, some patiently, others impatiently because of the bad weather.
The girl’s
2
was so sweet. “Mom, let’s run through the rain,” she said suddenly.
“What?” Mom asked.
“Let’s run through the rain!”
“No, Honey. We’11
3
until it slows down a bit,” Mom replied.
The child waited about another
4
and repeated, “Mom, let’s run through the rain.”
“We’11 get
5
if we do,” Mom said.
“No, we won’t, Mom. That’s not what you said this
6
,” the young girl said as she tugged (拽) at her mom’s arm.
“This morning?
7
did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?”
“Don’t you
8
? When you were talking to Daddy
9
his cancer, you said, ‘If God can get us through this, he can get us through
10
!’”
The people became
11
. Nothing could be
12
but the rain. Mom thought for a moment about what she would say.
“Honey, you are
13
. Let’s run through the rain.”
14
they ran off. People all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they
15
past the cars and through the puddles (水坑). They
16
their shopping bags over their heads. They got wet through, but they were
17
by a few who laughed like children all the
18
to their cars.
People can
19
your money and health, but no one can ever take away your memories. So, don’t

to make time to make memories every day.

Picture this situation. It is late afternoon and you are
1
. You have an important dinner engagement that evening so you
2
to take an hour nap. Instead of setting your alarm you ask a friend who is visiting to wake you in an hour. He 38.
Two hours later, your friend wakes you. You ask, “Why didn’t you wake me after one hour?” He
3
that he thought you asked him to wake you in two hours and that is what he said. You then have to run around and get ready
4
, muttering to yourself about how you
5
have set the alarm rather than asking your friend to wake you. Had you done that, you would not have been so
6
to get ready.
Your conclusion is correct. Your
7
of what happened looked at the system you used. Your friend’s
8
to wake you resulted from a miscommunication.
9
he didn’t hear you correctly or you misspoke.
10
at the situation from the point of view of being personally responsible is always better than blaming yourself or another. So how do you best be “responsible” in this situation? The answer is
11
in systems thinking.
Dr. W. Edward Deming is the American statistician who is credited with
12
the quality practices to Japan.
13
his arrival in that country in 1950, the label “made in Japan” was synonymous with inferior(劣等的) quality. Now the same “made in Japan” label is synonymous(等同) with
14
quality.
So what did Dr. Deming teach the Japanese that made such a
15
to the quality of their products? The answer is quite simple, yet profound.
16
on years of statistical analysis, Deming was able to validate(证明) that
17
% of all failures are not because people don’t want to do a good job. The fact is that
18
people want to do a good job.
What, then, is the
19
if it’s not the people?
It’s the system. The system failed in 94% of the
20
, not the people.

One afternoon I was sitting at my favorite table in a restaurant, waiting for the food I had ordered to arrive. Suddenly I

he knew me. The man had a newspaper

I called the owner of the restaurant and asked what the man had

If you are human, you can’t help but experience times when everything seems to be going wrong .You must also
1
as if your life is completely out of control at times. It is during those “down times” that words of encouragement from family, friends, co-workers or
2
strangers can boost (增强) your spirits. It is also during those
3
that destructive words can be devastating (毁灭性的) and sink you deeper and deeper into depression.
For example, consider this story about a group of
4
who were traveling through the woods when
5
of them fell into a deep pit (坑).All of the other frogs gathered around the
6
.When they saw how
7
the pit was, they told the two
8
frogs they would never get out.
The two frogs didn’t obey what other frogs said and tried to
9
out of the pit.The other frogs kept telling them not to jump,
10
it was in vain. Finally, one of the frogs followed what the other frogs were saying and simply
11
.He fell down and
12
.The other frog continued to jump as
13
as he could.Once again the crowd of frogs shouted at him to
14
the pain.The more they
15
, the harder he jumped and finally he
16
to safety.
When he
17
, the other frogs asked him why he continued to jump when they were all
18
him to simply quit.The frog
19
to them that he was a little bit deaf.He thought they were
20
him all the time.

Nick was not the kind of boy I had expected to spend my summer with. I was hoping tohave a
1
the summer before my busy senior year, but my mother asked me to do her a
2
. One of her colleagues needed a full-time
3
. “You planned to volunteer at the local hospital, why not volunteer to
4
Nick instead?” Then she told me that this six-year-old boy was not a
5
child.
Nick was a lovely little boy who suffered from many disorders. Normal day-care centres would not
6
him. As a baby, he had serious ear infections which left him with equilibrium (平衡) problems. He couldn’t
7
or run properly. I was hesitating (犹豫)
8
I was to take the job when my mother
9
, “Don’t you want to be a nurse in the future? I doubt if you even have the
10
.”
Then I told her I was
11
for the job.
The day started at 7:00 a.m. Nick was my wake-up call! With so much energy and very little
12
, he was quite a mix.
In the park, when he saw all the other children play on the jungle gym and swings (秋千), the boy’s face
13
up — how he wished he belonged to the group of his age! You would think it would be
14
to get a child to go down a slide (滑梯). Believe me, it wasn’t! It took time, a lot of time. But with patience and support, Nick took one step up the slide each day. We worked together to face his
15
and gradually he got closer to taking the slide of his life.
Halfway through the summer, he
16
it to the top of the slide. With my arms
17
him tightly, we flew down the slide! I waited for hisreaction. After realizing that he was safe and sound, he gave me a big
18
and asked, “May I go down again, alone?” I had never been happier in my life when I saw this little child climb the ladder and enjoy what other children
19
for granted. This
20
child taught me that being a nurse means respect, kindness and patience.

It is always interesting to visit another country, especially for those who have never traveled a great deal. Foreign
1
can be very educational for
2
if he is interested enough to make preparations beforehand. Learning the language of the new country would be
3
for the traveler, but the benefits of
4
an effort would become obvious immediately
5
his travel. It may not seem important to him when he comfortably stays at home, but knowing
6
to order a meal or rent a room is necessary for the newcomer in a strange country. Without
7
the language, it is very difficult for the stranger to
8
the people of the new country and their customs.
To be sure, he can see places and things without the use of a language, but places and things are not the heart of any country. To get the greatest
9
from a trip to another country, it is
10
important for the visitor to have an understanding of the language.

I am always eager to do experiments, especially chemistry ones. It's
1
to work with test tubes and beakers(烧杯) , even though sometimes my efforts end in
2
. Experiments were fun for me
3
a recent accident.
The
4
happened when I was heating a big test tube with an alcohol burner(酒精灯) , chatting to my partner while waiting for
5
changes. All of a sudden, the tube cracked. Even though I jumped from my seat when I heard the crack, the hair on my forehead was
6
as I was leaning too close to the test tube.
7
I had no time to be sad about my hair: the liquid in the test tube poured onto the table and caught fire. I'd never
8
anything so bad! My
9
went blank (空白)for a moment. Then I quickly covered the fire with a damp cloth to
10
.
The teacher told me that the test tube broke in half at the bottom because we didn't dry it properly before
11
it.
We calmed down and did the experiment, again. But our hearts were still
12
rapidly even after we walked out of the lab.
But my bad
13
didn't end there! Since all
14
was focused on the flames while we were in the lab, I didn't see the liquid falling onto my trousers.
During the following class, I felt a
15
in my leg. Soon it became more and more painful and I touched the area with my fingers,
16
to make things better. But to my great
17
, the material of my trousers turned into powder! “Vitrio(硫酸)! ! !”The terrible word came into my mind. I rushed out right away to wash and examine my poor skin.
18
, it was not a serious injury.
After changing my
19
I sat down and told myself: danger is no joke! It's very important to have a serious
20
in chemistry class. Doing scientific experiments as a learner is no laughing matter.

The yearly Marathon in my town usually happened during a heat wave. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance(救护车)
1
any of them needed medical attention.
“We’re supposed to stay behind the
2
runner, so take it slowly,” I said to the driver, Doug, as the race started.
The front-runners started to
3
and then my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue silk running shorts and a loose white T-shirt.
We knew we were already watching our “last runner.” Her
4
were so crippled(残疾的)that it seemed almost impossible for her to be able to walk, let alone run a marathon.
Doug and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward.
5
, she was the only runner left in sight. Tears streamed down my face when I watched with respect
6
she pushed forward with great determination through the last miles.
When the finish line came into sight, rubbish lay everywhere and the
7
crowds had long gone home. Yet, standing straight and ever so proud
8
a lone man. He was
9
one end of a ribbon(缎带)of crepe paper(皱纹纸)
10
to a post. She slowly crossed through, leaving both ends of the paper fluttering behind her.
I do not know this woman’s name, but that day she became part of my
11
– a part I often depend on. For her, it wasn’t about
12
the other runners or winning a prize, but about
13
what she had set out to do, no matter
14
. When I think things are too difficult or I get those “I-just-can’t-do-it,” I think of the last runner. Then I realize how
15
the task before me really is.

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had loved a beautiful sports car in a dealer’s showroom, and knowing his father could well
1
it, he told him that was all he wanted.
As
2
drew near, the young man expected
3
that his father had bought the car. Finally, on the morning of the special day, his father called him into his study. His father told him how
4
he was to have such a fine son, and how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped (包装好的) gift box. Curious, but a little bit
5
, the young man opened the box and found a lovely Bible (圣经).
Angrily, he raised his
6
to his father and said, “Is a Bible
7
you can give me with all your money?” He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.
Many years
8
and the young man was very successful in business, but
9
his father was very old, he thought perhaps he
10
go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day.
11
he could make the arrangements (安排), he received a telegram which
12
him of his father’s death, and all the possessions (财产) willed (立遗嘱) to him.
13
arriving at his father’s house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to
14
through his father’s important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had
15
it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to
16
. As he was reading, a car
17
dropped from the back of the Bible.
How many times do we
18
blessings (祝福) because they are not wrapped as we expected? Do not spoil (搞糟) what you have by desiring (渴求) what you have not; but remember what you now have was once
19
the things you hoped for. What may appear as bad fortune (运气) may
20
be the door that is just waiting to be opened.
