A month after Hurricane Katrina, I returned home in New Orleans. There   1   my house, reduced to waist-high ruins, smelly and dirty.

Before the trip, I had had my car fixed .When the office employee of the garage was writing up the bill, she  2     my Louisiana license plate. “You from New Orleans?” she asked .I said I was, “No   3    .” She said, and firmly shook her   4   when I reached for my wallet. The next day I went for a haircut, and    5   happened.

As my wife was studying in Florida ,we decided to move there and tried to find a(n)   6   house that we could afford while   7   paying off a mortgage(抵押贷款)on our ruined house .We looked at many places, but   8   was satisfactory. We had begun to accept that we would have to live in    9   reduced circumstances(条件)for a while,   10   I got a very curious e-mail from a James Kennedy in California. He had read some pieces I had written about our    11   for Slate, the online magazine and wanted to give us a new   12   across the lake for New Orleans.

It sounded too good to be true ,   11   I replied ,thanking him for his exceptional generosity(大方),   14   we had no plans to go back .Then a poet at the University of Florida offered to    15   his house to me, while he went to England on his one-year paid leave. The rent was rather   16   .I mentioned the poet’s offer to    17   , and the next day he sent a   18   covering our entire rent for eight months .Throughout this painful experience, the kindness of strangers has done much to    19   my faith in humanity .It’s almost    20   losing your worldly possessions to be reminded that people are really nice when given half a chance.

On July 22, 2007, Jay Brunkella ,a police officer in the Rogers Park district in Chicago , was shot during a drug arrest and died. Shortly afterwards, fellow officer Ken Knapcik, a 20-year veteran(老警官)of the force, returned home after work to find a note from his 15-year-old daughter on the dining table.

Dad—this poem came directly from my heart. I love you so much! It scares and amazes me that you go out every day and risk everything to provide us with all that we have. I wrote this to express how much I love you and how much lost I’d be without you-Laura. P.S.: Hey, let’s be careful out there.

Titled “The Last Cop”, Laura’s poem was dedicated “To all the cops in the world who have daughters who love them with all their hearts. And especially to my dad.” It was about a police-officer’s daughter who sees on the night time news that her father has been shot. Part of poem: “Daddy, my Daddy, can you hear me cry? Oh, God, I need my Daddy, please don’t let him die.”

Ken Knapcik stood alone as he read the poem. “It took me several minutes,” he said. “I’d get through part of it and have to stop before I could go on. I was weeping. She had never told me she was scared.” He took the poem to work the next day and showed it to his fellow officers. “I’ve never seen so many grown men cry. Some couldn’t finish it.”

Knapcik keeps Laura’s poem in the pocket of his police jacket. He takes it with him every time he leaves the house for a new shift. “I don’t want to be out there without it.” he said, “I’ll probably carry it with me forever.”

In the last 500 years, nothing about people—their clothes, ideas, or languages-has changed as much as what they eat .The original chocolate drink was made from the seeds of a cocoa tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500’s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became fashionable. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today.

The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved when the crop failed during the “Potato Famine” of 1845-1846, and thousands more were forced to leave their homeland and move to America.

There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the world's largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in Colombia and other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia, a country in Africa.  It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400’s.

According to an Arabic legend, coffee was discovered when a person named Kaldi noticed that his goats were attracted to the red berries on a coffee bush. He tried one and experienced the “wide-awake” feeling that one-third of the world’s population now starts the day with.

3.Thousands of Irish people starved during the “Potato Famine” because     .

A.they were so dependent on the potatoes that they refused to eat anything else.

B.they were forced to leave their homeland and move to America.

C.the weather conditions in Ireland were not suitable for growing potatoes.

       D.the potato harvest was bad.

4.According to the text, which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.One third of the world’s population drinks coffee.

       B.Coffee is native to Colombia.

       C.Coffee can keep one awake.

       D. Coffee drinks were first made by Arabs.

Sea farming is one of the brightest hopes for finding an answer to the world food problem. Although it may be years before sea farming produces large quantities of food, it is already successful. One of its successes is the growing of oyster(牡蛎), which are very good to eat.

Oyster farming is a big new business on Cape Cod, where large crops of oysters have been harvested. The waters there were famous for oysters until the supply gave out about fifteen years ago. “There’s a whole age group of people who have never eaten oysters”, said Karl Touraine, manager of a company that grows oysters on nylon strings hanging from metal frames(框架).

“For about twenty years the oyster has been in short supply, and our aim is to turn around this by using new, modern growing techniques,” he explained.

“Wareham, on Cape Cod, is the first place in the US where oysters are being grown on frames just off the bottom of the sea,” said Mr. Touraine. “It’s been done successfully in Norway and Australia and, in the last few years, in Spain. The Japanese have used this form of sea farming for years, and they’re the most successful, with a yearly crop of more than 46,000 pounds of oysters an acre.”

My Touraine’s group grows on strings, away from the bottom so that the oysters’ natural enemies cannot reach them. “When an oyster can be kept away from enemies and live in unpolluted water with plenty to eat, he’ll grow fast.” Karl noted happily.

Are you a team person? Are you at your best as part of a small ,tightly united group of devoted workers? If so ,the future may hold more for you than you think.

High technology, some said, would make teamwork a thing of the past. That’s happening in those areas of business and data processing where one person and a computer can replace a team of workers.

But, elsewhere, teamwork is very much alive. High technology has led to a new type of teamwork in a number of fields, including advertising, scientific research, engineering design, and ocean exploration.

Through computer networking, scientists, engineers, and technicians at different places—often thousands of miles apart—can work on the same project at once. They can exchange ideas, try out different designs, and test their results.

Examples? An engineering team can now design and try out a robot system, a new manufacturing process, or an entire factory—before it is built. A medical team can simulate(模拟)a dangerous operation before performing it on the patient.

Of course, computer-aided team effort doesn’t end with investigation(探究)and simulation. It now usually continues into actual design ,manufacturing, and testing. “CAD-CAM, computer-aided design and manufacture, is breaking down barriers between traditional designed manufacturing functions,” explains Dr.Prakash Rao, an engineering manager at General Electric. “Interdisciplinary(跨学科的)teams and engineers follow a product from concept(观念) to production. Everything is interconnected like a network.”

Sometimes, a computer-aided effort can extend beyond production. A team that produces robots may use them to explore space and ocean depths. For high-technology teamwork, the future seems limitless.
