The town of Pressure and the town of Pleasure were neighbors but had  1  in common. Residents built walls to   2   influence from  3   town. .

In Pressure, everyone struggled to be the very best. When women   4    birth, they would compete to have the baby with the   5    cry. There was violent competition in every aspect of life Because   6   was the index(指数) of success, people were always   7   making money, with no time for relaxation.

8  ,over in Pleasure, the motto was “As long as you like it, do it. ” People   9  without pressure and could do   10    they liked. Children played computer games day and night. Workers might     sit around the office   12   sipping coffee and doing nothing.   13    the lack of regulations, nobody worried about losing their jobs. No one had slightest thought of moving   14  , either for themselves or for the town. The computer they used were   15    models from Pressure.

Then, people in the two towns began asking themselves, “What is life   17  ?” But, just be-  fore life in the two towns completely failed, there came a saint-Mr. Reason. He went from door to door,  18   with people and giving advice. People in Pressure learnt to be content with what they had, while people in Pleasure began to make plans. They    19    walls between them and built a road to connect the two. The town people   20  to realize the truth — There is no space between Pressure and Pleasure if people don’t go to extremes.

My teacher held up a piece of broken glass and asked, “Who broke this window? ”Thirty boys tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher may have found out. She seldom became angry, buy she was this time.

“Oh,” I thought. I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a naughty throw of a baseball. If I admitted guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that ? I didn’t even get an allowance. “My father is going to have a fit, ” I thought. I didn’t want to raise my hand, but some force much stronger than I was pulled it skyward. I told the truth. “I did it. ” It was hard enough to say what I had.

My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher to strike a student. But I feared she was going to start with me.

“I know how you like birds,” she said as she stood looking down at my guilt — ridden face. “Here is that field guide about birds that you are constantly checking out. It is yours now. It’s time we got a new one for the school anyway. You will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding you for your misdeed. I am rewarding you for your truthfulness. ”

I couldn’t believe it! I wasn’t being punished and I was getting my own bird field guide-the very one that I had been saving up money to buy.

All that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me. That lesson stays with me every day and it will echo forever.

This is supposedly a true story. It happened in a small town of the province of Quebec, Canada, in October 2006. They showed the video surveillance(监视)tape on the news, and even the anchorman(现场报道员)was laughing through it.

A robber came into a convenience store wearing a ski mask and a gun wanting to empty the cash register. He took the clerk to the back store and locked her up in the fridge. Unfortunately, when he came back to the front of the store, a customer had come in. So he took off the ski mask and the gloves, and pretended to be filling in for the clerk. The customer wanted a lottery ticket, so he tried to help her out, by pressing a whole bunch of buttons on the machine (thus leaving fingerprints everywhere), but the machine was not cooperating.

At the same time, another customer walks in. Finally, he tells the first customer(after about 5 minutes of close – up shots from the camera)that the machine is not working and that he won’t be able to help her. The robber makes the sale to the second customer and he leaves as well.

The robber then puts back on his gloves to take the money(after touching just about everything in sight without gloves), and hides his face with the palm of his hands as he is leaving. This scene lasted well over 10 minutes, during which, you see and hear the robber as well as in a movie.

I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent. I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I slow up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows(誓约)mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.

So here’s what I wanted to tell you today: Get a life — a real life, not a desire of the next promotion(提升),a bigger paycheck, or a larger house.

Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure, it is work, Pick up the phone. Send an e — mail. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted.

It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It is so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in some ways that, if I had my choice, it would  never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.   I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totally. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned.

Tell them this :Read in the backyard with the sunshine on your face, Learn to be happy. And think of life as a deadly illness. Because if you do, you will live it with joy and passion(激情)as it ought to be lived.

When people advise your children to “get an education”, they tell you only half the truth. What they really mean is to get just enough education to give manpower for your society.

Get a high school diploma, at least. Without that, you are occupationally(职业上) dead, unless your name happens to be George Bernard Shaw or Thomas Alva Edison and you can successfully stop studying in primary school.

Get a college degree, if possible. with a BA(学士学位),you should start to find a job, You have to put on the brakes now. If you do go for a master’s degree, make sure it is an MBA and only from a first — class university, Otherwise, the famous law of diminishing(报酬递减律)begins to work..

Do you know, for example, that long — distance truck drivers make more money a year than full professors(正教授)?Yes, each driver was paid ﹩28,000 in 1997 while a full professor managed to get﹩27,930.

A PhD is the highest degree you can get, but except in few specialized fields such as physics or chemistry, where the degree can quickly be turned to industrial or commercial aim, you are facing a not very bright future. There are more PhDs unemployed in this country than in any other part of the world by far.

If you become a PhD in English or history or political science or languages or —worst of all— in philosophy, you take the risk of becoming over-educated for our national demands.

Thousands of PhDs are selling shoes, driving taxis, vomiting(呕吐)on tables and filling out applications month after month, and then may be taking a job in high school or college with the pay much less than a door – keeper makes.
