A lesson in caring

It was a cold evening and my daughter and I were walking up Broadway.I didn’t notice a guy sitting inside a cardboard box.But Nora did.She wasn’t even four, but she  1 at my coat and said, “That man’s cold.Daddy, we take him home?”

I don’t remember my reply. But I do remember a sudden  3  feeling inside me.I had always been delighted at how much my daughter noticed in her 4  , whether it was in flight or children playing. But now she was noticing and beggary.

A few days later, I saw an article in the newspaper about volunteers who picked up a food package from a nearby school on a Sunday morning and it to an elderly person. It was quick and easy.I us up.Nora was about it.She could understand the importance of food, so she could easily see how 10  our job was. When Sunday came, she was ready, but I had to 11    myself to leave the house to fetch the food package. On my way to the school, I fought an urge(强烈愿望) to turn 12  .The Sunday paper and coffee were waiting for me at home. Why do this?  13 , we phoned the elderly person we’d been appointed. She 14  us right over.

The building was in a bad state.Facing us was a silver-haired woman in an old dress. She took the package and asked us to come in.Nora ran inside.I unwillingly followed.15  inside, I saw that the department belonged to someone poor. Our hostess showed us some photos.Nora played and when it came time to say goodbye, we three hugged, I walked home in tears.

Professionals call such a(n)16  “a volunteer opportunity”.They are opportunities, I’ve come to see.Where else but as volunteers do you have the opportunity to do something 17   that’s good for others as well as for yourself? Nora and I regularly serve to needy people and 18   clothes for the homeless.Yet, as I’ve 19 her grow over these past four years, I still wonder—which of us has 20  more?

Once I spoke at a high school. After the speech, I was asked to see a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him.I agreed.

He was Matthew. When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five, then they were told he would not make it to ten.Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal weight lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles (障碍)and going for my dreams.

I spent over an hour talking to Matthew.Never once did he complain. He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams.Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He just talked about his  hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weight with me.

When we finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck.I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles

than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me.He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal.Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”

Last summer I got the news that Matthew had passed away and a letter Matthew had written me a few days before:

Dear Rick,

My mom said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me.The doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live any more. But I still smile as much as I can.

I told you some day I was going to the Olympics and win a gold medal. But I know now I’ll never make it.But I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you.

Thank you for loving me.

Your friend,

Matthew

“The first and best of victories is for a man to conquer himself ; to be conquered by himself is, of all things, the most shameful,” says Plato.Self-control is at the root of all the advantages.Let a man give in to his impulses and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral freedom.

A single angry word has lost many a friend. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger, he would check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are conscious of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that you can hold back rising anger. Many a person has dropped dead in great anger.Fits of anger bring fits of disease.“Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad” “Keep cool,” says George Herbert, “for fierceness makes error a fault.”

To be angry with a weak man is to prove that you are not strong yourself.“Anger,” says Pythagoras, “bring with folly (愚蠢)and ends with regret.” You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him.

Self-control is man’s last greatest victory.

If a man lacks self-control, he seems to lack everything.Without it he can have no patience, no power to govern himself ; he can have no self-confidence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he lacks self-control, the very backbone and nerve of character are lacking also.

1.What does the reader learn from the first paragraph ?

A.The greatest victory for a man is to conquer everything except himself.

B.One’s moral freedom is based on the control of himself.

C.To control oneself is the most difficult in one’s life.

D.If a person is too stubborn, he will feel most shameful.

2.What is the correct interpretation of “Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad”?

A.If the gods want to kill you, they make you crazy first.

B.If you always lose your temper, you will soon be finished.

C.If you cannot control yourself, you will become crazy.

D.If you are mad, you will be punished by the gods.

3.If a man lacks self-control, he lacks all of the following EXCEPT _________.

A.the very backbone and nerve of character

B.the patience and power to control himself

       C.strong feelings

       D.self-confidence

4.The author’s main purpose in writing this article is to ___________.

A.explain that self-control is the key to success

B.teach people how to control everything in order to make a great success

C.distinguish all kinds of self-control and suggest ways for keeping it

D.advise people not to lose temper so as to make and keep more friends

How to Make the Most of Your Time

Time management is important in our daily life. There never seems to be enough hours in the day to accomplish all you need to do.Here are some tips that might be of some help to you.

1.Set up a plan.Go for a week at a time, and prioritize the most important ones.Include things you want to accomplish.Focus mostly on the things that are important to you.

2.Control your stress. No matter what kind of pressure mounts on you, try to keep cool.Stressing out can lead to an early breakdown, which is definitely counter-productive (事与愿违) when you have a list of things to do.It's easier to take a 10-minute break and cool off than work all week with built up stress.

3.Shut your door. When working under a schedule, perform your important tasks with your door shut to get them done. This will ensure a better quality time to get what needs to be done, done.

4.Focus on one thing at a time.Forget trying to multi-task! You will lose concentration, and it will take you longer to accomplish what you set out to do.

5.Just say "no." If you are constantly interrupted, and you really don't have the time to help out, just say "no." You're only one person, and you can't save the world by yourself!

6.Stop wasting time on the phone. While talking on the phone, keep your conversations short, and to the point and you'll waste much less time.

7.Be realistic. You can only do what you can do.Don't set out to accomplish the impossible.Do your best, but keep realistic expectations of yourself.

8.Relax.The most important thing is remember to take time to relax, and regroup. You need a break every now and then to keep working efficiently.Even if it's a 10-minute walk, get away from your list and get refreshed.

As families today get busier and busier, it's important to your own mental health to keep things on track.Don't delay; get your life in order now.

       A.choose something by thinking carefully

B.it may limit the speed to get things done

D.we are supposed to have a break while working

3.Which statement would the author agree to?

B.It is impolite to refuse to help others at work.

C.Having breaks regularly may delay our tasks.
